About this lesson
A phone call is essential for communicating the most important, critical information.
- 00:04 We need to start off by recognizing the unique power of the phone, and
- 00:09 therefore the human voice.
- 00:11 That's what the phone is good for.
- 00:13 Conveying the human voice.
- 00:16 And there are a lot of things that are distinct about that.
- 00:19 When you call someone it shows a certain level of importance.
- 00:22 It's not just a quick email.
- 00:24 It's not just a quick text.
- 00:26 The phone is uniquely valuable for
- 00:29 communicating things that are of extreme importance.
- 00:33 I want this job.
- 00:35 We want you to hire us.
- 00:37 We are firing you.
- 00:40 You've had a loved one who has died.
- 00:42 Nobody wants to get an email or a text saying, will you marry me,
- 00:47 or your child has died, or your father has died.
- 00:51 It's considered too impersonal.
- 00:53 That's the beauty of the telephone.
- 00:55 It's much, much more personal.
- 00:57 It's a way of putting a spotlight on a message that you think is important.
- 01:03 It's a way for other people to communicate important things to you.
- 01:07 And that's why you're going to pay attention.
- 01:09 And I'm going to give you some techniques for really making sure it sticks with you.
- 01:12 But it's also why you're going to use the phone to communicate important things.
- 01:18 Think about your own work day.
- 01:20 How many emails do you get on an average day versus an average week?
- 01:25 Now, think about how many phone calls do you get?
- 01:28 If you're like me, or most people, you probably get 100 emails,
- 01:33 maybe 1,000 emails for every phone call.
- 01:37 What stands out more?
- 01:39 Now, you can say you don't like phone calls or it's annoying.
- 01:43 But if you're trying to do a serious, important part of business,
- 01:47 get a new client.
- 01:48 There's nothing like a phone call from a new client who says, yes,
- 01:52 we want to work with you send over the contract.
- 01:56 Much more powerful than just an email.
- 01:59 So, always be thinking about not just how to use the phone,
- 02:03 but when it is appropriate.
- 02:05 There are times when a simple email or text will be fine.
- 02:09 But for important information, serious stuff,
- 02:12 things critical to your business mission, things critical to
- 02:16 your most important customers, clients, prospects, your bosses.
- 02:20 That's when, if you can't meet in person, the phone is the next best thing.
