Locked lesson.
About this lesson
Noise from a busy location - or from eating and drinking - can disrupt your important phone call.
- 00:05 What?
- 00:06 I can't hear you.
- 00:08 You're looking for what kind of try.
- 00:11 You see how annoying that is.
- 00:13 Here's the lesson, don't answer your phone if you're in a really noisy, loud place.
- 00:19 Restaurants can be noisy.
- 00:21 Nightclubs can be noisy.
- 00:23 Far better to see phone calls coming in,
- 00:26 let it go to voicemail and then excuse yourself, go outside.
- 00:31 Go to a quiet place, return the call five minutes later, when it's quiet.
- 00:36 This way, you can have a normal tone of voice.
- 00:40 You may have a client prospect calling you.
- 00:42 It's three in the afternoon for them, buddy it's 9pm for you.
- 00:48 You're in, and you're off duty it's nightclub.
- 00:52 You're maybe having a good time, having a glass of wine or two.
- 00:56 Don't show that side of your life, your reality to the client,
- 01:01 or prospect of that moment.
- 01:03 Find a quiet place.
- 01:05 Wait till you're in a quiet place before you take the call.
- 01:07 You don't have to be shouting over music, over background sound,
- 01:12 over the loud clatter of people if you're at a noisy restaurant.
- 01:17 You want quiet when you're taking call, most the time.
- 01:21 Of course, there could be exceptions, where it's a client you're dealing with.
- 01:25 It's a very intense crisis situation, you're going back and forth.
- 01:28 They have to get a hold of you instantly, and
- 01:31 you've already talked a dozen times a day.
- 01:33 Yeah, maybe you pick up instantly, no matter where you are.
- 01:38 But otherwise, you don't want to expose someone the first time talking to you,
- 01:43 and they are hearing you shouting, it just does not make a good impression at all.
- 01:49 So don't do that.
- 01:50 Speaking of good impressions, if you're out,
- 01:53 everybody deserves to relax in their own way.
- 01:55 But if you had a couple glasses of wine, you're at it.
- 01:58 Nice loud fun place.
- 02:00 My recommendation, just don't take the call.
- 02:03 Return the call tomorrow, because you may think you're perfectly fine,
- 02:09 but if you have even a 5% slurring your speech that might make
- 02:14 a permanent negative impression on a client, customer, or boss.
- 02:19 So, make sure But you're not doing anything
- 02:22 to expose yourself to criticism when you're taking calls after hours.
- 02:30 Do you want to hear that?
- 02:35 I don't think so, you're probably disgusted.
- 02:37 All right, you're probably looking for the one-star rating button right now.
- 02:42 Why don't I do that?
- 02:43 I just want to point out to you when you're talking on the phone, don't eat,
- 02:47 people can hear it.
- 02:48 It strikes them as rude.
- 02:50 Have I ever been guilty of that?
- 02:51 Yes.
- 02:52 But I try not to, and I'm especially trying not to when I'm talking to clients,
- 02:58 customers, prospects, and other decision makers involved in my own business.
- 03:04 Should I never do that?
- 03:06 Yeah, I should never do that, but we're all human beings.
- 03:09 So if I'm talking to my spouse or something, and it's dinner time, and
- 03:13 I'm traveling, yeah, I might do that.
- 03:16 Learn what's appropriate in business situations.
- 03:20 So you don't want to be sending any noises that are getting going to be confusing
- 03:26 to the business person you're speaking to, so eating can be a problem.
- 03:30 Drinking, slurping, you may think you're really quiet,
- 03:35 but the sipping is sound, and you're louder than you think.
- 03:39 So that's why I'm drinking my tea in between takes of shooting this course for
- 03:44 you, not during the actual video other than to make a point there.
- 03:48 Typing is another one.
- 03:51 We've talked about that, but when you're typing, people can hear it in
- 03:55 the back of their mind they're thinking she's handling email now.
- 04:00 He's talking to friends on Facebook, typing.
- 04:03 Don't make noises.
- 04:05 The only thing someone should hear when they're speaking to
- 04:09 you on the phone is your voice.
