- SharePoint Lists and Libraries
- SharePoint Integration
- Workflows
- SharePoint Web Pages
- Roles and Permissions

Modern vs. Classic Experience
Pages in SharePoint Online can be viewed in two ways: classic or modern. Classic used to be the only view available in SharePoint but Microsoft is slowly phasing in the modern experience. The modern experience is faster, has more features, and works better across devices. As both are currently available in SharePoint, some pages default to classic view and some to modern.
Our SharePoint settings are set to use the default experience for the site.
- Click the Cog icon.
- Click Library settings.
- Click Advanced settings.
- Scroll down to List experience.
- Check the box next to Default experience for this site.
Important points to note about this course:
- We will be using the online version of SharePoint.
- There are no downloadable course files. Instead, we will create a practice site.
- SharePoint Online is a browser-based application that works best in Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge.
Hints & tips
- Ensure that you have a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes access to SharePoint Online.
- 00:04 Hello everyone and welcome to this course on SharePoint Online.
- 00:07 My name is Deb Ashby and I'm an IT trainer specializing in Microsoft products.
- 00:13 And I'm going to be your host, guiding you through how to become more productive and
- 00:18 efficient when using SharePoint.
- 00:21 Now before we jump into the course,
- 00:23 I want to introduce you to the topics we're going to be covering.
- 00:26 We'll start out by discussing what SharePoint is, and why it's useful.
- 00:31 I'll show you how to access SharePoint, and
- 00:33 we'll explore the SharePoint interface and navigation.
- 00:36 We'll end this introductory section by speaking briefly about SharePoint
- 00:41 roles and permissions.
- 00:43 The next two sections we'll dedicate to SharePoint Lists and SharePoint Libraries.
- 00:48 You'll soon come to see that pretty much everything in SharePoint is a list.
- 00:52 So understanding how to create, manage, and
- 00:55 edit lists and libraries is an essential SharePoint skill.
- 00:59 Next, we'll learn how to expand SharePoint content by connecting to
- 01:04 other applications like Outlook and Excel.
- 01:07 We'll also take a look at SharePoint notifications, and
- 01:10 I'm going to show you how you can create a discussion board.
- 01:13 We'll then move on to learning how we can become more
- 01:17 efficient by automating workflows.
- 01:19 And I'm going to show you an example of how to create an approval workflow within
- 01:24 SharePoint.
- 01:25 Next we'll learn how to use SharePoint as an intranet site by creating web
- 01:30 pages that contain web and app parts and other types of content.
- 01:34 We'll then go back and take a deeper dive into the topic of roles and
- 01:39 permissions and how you can manage access to a SharePoint site.
- 01:43 In the final section, we'll talk about site collections, subsites, and
- 01:48 take a look at how we can customize the overall look and
- 01:51 feel of the site using themes and site settings.
- 01:54 Now, a couple of things to mention before we begin.
- 01:57 SharePoint is an online application and so
- 02:00 there are no downloadable course or exercise files to follow.
- 02:05 Instead, in the last lesson of this section, I will walk you through how to
- 02:09 create your own practice SharePoint site, so that you can follow along with me.
- 02:14 Alternatively, if you already have a practice or
- 02:17 test site available, please feel free to use that one.
- 02:21 Now, I will be using the online version of SharePoint through Microsoft 365,
- 02:26 as opposed to the enterprise desktop version.
- 02:29 And the final point that's definitely worth mentioning is that there are two
- 02:33 ways that you can view a SharePoint site, the classic experience or
- 02:37 the modern experience.
- 02:38 The classic experience used to be the only way to view a SharePoint site, but
- 02:42 more recently, Microsoft have introduced the modern experience.
- 02:46 Which is faster, has more features, and works better across different devices.
- 02:52 Now both views are still available, which can get a little bit confusing as
- 02:57 some pages default to classic and some to modern.
- 03:00 Now the majority of this course will be demonstrated using the modern experience.
- 03:05 But if you find that my pages look a little bit different to yours,
- 03:10 it's worth checking what experience you're using in your settings.
- 03:15 So with all that said, we have lots to cover.
- 03:17 So now is the time to grab yourself a drink,
- 03:21 and I will see you over in the next lesson.
