Quick reference
Creating a Practice Site
Create a practice SharePoint site so you can follow along with the instructor.
When to use
Create a practice site whenever you want to try out new skills and explore SharePoint functionality without affecting a live site.
Instructions
Create a New Site
From the SharePoint start screen
- Click Create site.
- Choose Team site.
- Type in a name for the site e.g. 'yourname Practice Site'.
- Enter a description of the site (optional).
- From the Privacy dropdown, select Public.
- Click Next.
At this stage, we could choose to add additional members or owners to the site. As this is a practice site, we aren't going to add anyone else.
- Click Finish.
Hints & tips
- If we decide at a later time to invite people to this site, we can do that once the site has been created.
- If the site name you've chosen is already in use, you will receive an error message. Please choose another name.
- 00:04 As I mentioned in the introduction, SharePoint is an online application.
- 00:08 What I'm going to walk you through is the process for
- 00:11 creating a practice SharePoint site.
- 00:14 So if you want to follow along with me and practice the skills that we're learning as
- 00:18 we're going through the course, then this might be something that you want to do.
- 00:23 If you don't feel like doing that, and you just want to sit back and
- 00:26 watch the course, that's absolutely fine as well.
- 00:29 But if you would like to create a practice site, let's take a look at how we do that.
- 00:33 And I guess, I am kind of skipping ahead a little bit just here because
- 00:37 I haven't even shown you how to access SharePoint yet.
- 00:40 We're going to be doing that in the next section.
- 00:43 So if you would prefer to watch this lesson after you've seen how to access
- 00:47 SharePoint, then that's totally fine.
- 00:50 So on the screen right now I am logged into my SharePoint account.
- 00:54 And you can see here I'm logged in via Microsoft 365.
- 00:59 Now, we don't want you to worry too much about what we have on the screen just yet.
- 01:02 We're going to get into all of this and it will become a lot more familiar to you.
- 01:07 But for now, all I want to do is show you how to create a quick practice site for
- 01:11 you to use throughout this course, and it's very straightforward.
- 01:16 If we go to the Microsoft start page, and this is where you can see all
- 01:20 of the SharePoint sites that I'm currently following, or
- 01:23 ones that I've accessed recently.
- 01:26 You'll notice just above this list, I have a Create Site button.
- 01:31 So let's give this a good old clickety-click and see what happens.
- 01:35 Well, I only get two choices, I can choose to create a Team site or
- 01:40 I can choose to create a Communication site.
- 01:43 Now, again, I don't want you to focus or worry too much about what
- 01:46 the difference is between these two at the moment, let's just get our site created.
- 01:50 We want to create a Team site, so let's click that big old button.
- 01:54 And the first thing we need to do here is give our team site a name.
- 01:59 Now, normally, this would be related to whatever the site is about, and
- 02:02 I don't really mind what you call your site, you can call it anything you like.
- 02:06 Now, I'm going to give mine a fairly generic name,
- 02:10 let's just call it Deb's Practice site.
- 02:13 You can see the SharePoint does a quick check to make sure that that site name is
- 02:17 available which it is.
- 02:18 If it says that it's unavailable then you're going to need to choose
- 02:21 a different site name.
- 02:22 It gives it a group email address, a site address,
- 02:25 I can add a quick site description.
- 02:27 So I'm going to say, I'm just going to say practice site.
- 02:33 And then I can choose if this is a private or a public site.
- 02:37 So the difference between these two is that if you set your site to public,
- 02:41 it means that anyone in your organization can access the site.
- 02:45 If you set it to private, it means that only members,
- 02:48 and members are essentially people that you invite to your site can access it.
- 02:53 Again, don't worry too much about the differences between these two.
- 02:57 For now, let's just set our site to public and click on Next at the bottom.
- 03:02 And then get the opportunity to add some members to my site.
- 03:06 Now, because we're just creating a practice site for
- 03:09 use in this course, I'm not going to invite anyone to this site.
- 03:12 So we can leave both of these fields empty and just click the Finish button.
- 03:17 And it is as simple as that, you can see there is our practice site ready for
- 03:22 us to start working through this SharePoint course.
