Quick reference
Editing the Wiki Page
Once a Wiki Page has been created, we can edit the page and start adding content.
When to use
We use a Wiki Page whenever we want to bring together content and link to other pages.
Instructions
- Open the Wiki Page.
This page uses the Classic experience so we have ribbons and tabs as opposed to a horizontal menu.
- Click Edit
- From the Format Text tab, in the Layout group, click Text Layout.
- Choose a layout for the page.
- Click in the first section and type a heading, e.g. 'Training Contacts'.
- Format the heading using the formatting options on the Format Text tab.
- Make the heading bold, change the font style, increase the font size and change the font color.
We can add other types of content to our pages.
- Click in the next empty section.
- From the Insert tab, review the different types of content we can insert e.g. tables, pictures, links, etc.
Creating Mailto Links on the Wiki Page
We can link to other types of content from the Wiki Page. For example, we can link to email addresses.
- In the empty section underneath the title, enter three names of contacts.
- Add email addresses for the contacts.
- Select the email address.
- From the Insert tab, click Link.
- In the address field type, the email address preceded with 'mailto:'
- Click OK.
Hints & tips
- Mailto links will open in your default email application.
- 00:04 So in the last lesson, we saw how we can add a Wiki page to our site.
- 00:08 Now, Wiki page brings together all different types of content.
- 00:12 Now, since that last lesson, I've actually gone in and
- 00:16 I've created two more Wiki pages for Training Team 2 and 3.
- 00:20 And I've added them in exactly the same way,
- 00:23 into this quick links area on the homepage of this site.
- 00:28 So now, I have three different areas for my three different teams.
- 00:33 So, let's click back on Training Team 1.
- 00:35 Now this is going to jump me back across to this Wiki page.
- 00:39 And one thing you might notice is that the layout here is using
- 00:43 the classic experience.
- 00:45 So that is why it kind of looks a little bit more old school and
- 00:49 we have ribbons running across the top instead of drop down menus.
- 00:53 Now currently, I just have the words Hello World on this page.
- 00:57 It doesn't particularly contain too much interesting content.
- 01:00 So, let me show you how you can edit these pages.
- 01:03 As we've already seen, in the top right hand corner, we have an edit button.
- 01:08 And when we click this button, it's going to put our page into edit mode.
- 01:12 And if you take a look running across the top, we now have access to all of these
- 01:16 different ribbons to really add content to our page.
- 01:19 And style it up so that it looks nice for our users.
- 01:23 No, I'm not going to go through and create a full page.
- 01:25 I will leave that for you to have a little experiment with and play around.
- 01:29 But let me just show you a couple of different things that you can
- 01:31 do with this.
- 01:32 So first thing I'm going to do is just delete out where we have Hello World.
- 01:35 Now, the first thing you might want to do on this page is define the layout.
- 01:39 So if we jump to the FORMAT TEXT ribbon all the way over in the layout group,
- 01:44 we have a Text Layout drop down.
- 01:47 And this allows us to choose if we want a one column layout,
- 01:50 one column with sidebar, two columns, so on and so forth.
- 01:54 So I think I'm going to go for two columns with header.
- 01:57 And immediately, you can see the difference that that makes.
- 02:00 I can add whatever I like into each of these different areas.
- 02:05 So what might be at the top here?
- 02:06 I want to have a heading.
- 02:07 So, this is for Training Team 1, so let's just type in Training Team 1.
- 02:11 I can then format this text to make it look a little bit nicer.
- 02:15 So at the moment, it doesn't really stand out, I'm going to choose, let's go for
- 02:19 something like Impact.
- 02:21 And I'm going to make this quite a bit bigger.
- 02:23 I can also do things like change the font color, so let's go for
- 02:28 dark purple, why not?
- 02:30 Now in the next section, I might choose to type some text, or
- 02:34 I can insert different pieces of content.
- 02:37 So maybe I want to add something like an image.
- 02:41 Or maybe I want to add a link to a list or a library or
- 02:45 some other piece of content that's contained within SharePoint.
- 02:50 If I want to do any of that, I go to the INSERT ribbon.
- 02:54 And you can see here, I can choose to insert a table.
- 02:58 I can insert a picture either from my computer or directly from an address.
- 03:05 I can add a link, I can upload a file, or I can add app and web parts.
- 03:12 Now, I'm not going to go too much into these at the moment because we have entire
- 03:15 lessons dedicated to this.
- 03:17 But you would use these if you wanted to add things like lists,
- 03:21 libraries, blogs discussion boards onto this particular page.
- 03:25 For the time being, I'm going to keep this fairly straightforward.
- 03:28 And what I'm going to add into this box is just a list of
- 03:32 the Training Team 1 contacts.
- 03:34 So let's say Training Team 1 Lead, and we're going to say that that is Ben Smith.
- 03:42 And his email address is bsmith@bespoketraining.com.
- 03:47 And his extension number is x3556.
- 03:51 And then, I want to have a list of all of the trainers who are part of that team.
- 03:56 And then, of course, I can start to apply some formatting.
- 03:59 So, let's take Training Team 1 Lead.
- 04:01 I'm going to go to that format text ribbon, and
- 04:04 I'm going to make this a little bit bigger.
- 04:06 And now remember, you can go in and you can change the size of the font and
- 04:10 even the font style.
- 04:11 If you want to, you could choose a preset style from this styles area just here.
- 04:16 So we have Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, so on and so forth.
- 04:21 So for the sake of quickness,
- 04:22 I'm going to say that I want these to be Heading level 2.
- 04:26 And let's do the same for trainers Heading level 2.
- 04:29 I'm also going to make these links, so let's select the first email address.
- 04:34 Go to INSERT, and say Link.
- 04:37 Now, because these are links to email addresses, I want the user to be able to
- 04:42 click on them and it open up an email in their preferred email package.
- 04:47 So, the address here is going to say mailto, and
- 04:51 then we want the actual email address.
- 04:54 So let's copy and paste this to make this a bit quicker, and click on OK.
- 04:58 And you can see now when I hover over, that looks more like a link.
- 05:02 So I'm going to go through and do the same for the other three addresses.
- 05:06 Once I'm happy with how my page looks, remember you need to save the page.
- 05:11 And the save button is hidden away all the way in the top right hand corner.
- 05:15 So let's click to save the page.
- 05:17 And is going to reload it and this is how it's going to look to your users.
- 05:22 Let's test these links to make sure that they are in fact working.
- 05:24 And if I click on Ben Smith, you can see it opens in my preferred email package and
- 05:30 is addressed to Ben Smith.
- 05:32 So the main takeaways here to edit your page, click that edit button in
- 05:37 the top right hand corner, choose your text layout for your page.
- 05:42 And then start going in and adding relevant content,
- 05:45 which might be in the form of text or links as we've added here.
- 05:49 But remember under the INSERT ribbon, you can also add things like tables, pictures.
- 05:53 You can upload files, and also add app and web parts,
- 05:58 which is what we're going to look at in the coming lessons.
