Quick reference
Using Web Parts
Web Parts can be used to add content to a page similar to App Parts.
When to use
We insert Web Parts whenever we want to add existing SharePoint content onto the page.
Instructions
- From the Wiki Page, click Edit.
- Reorganize the page by moving the document library App Part so it's underneath the email addresses using drag and drop.
- Click in the next blank box.
- From the Insert tab, in the Parts group, click Web Part.
- From the Apps category, Documents Part, select the 'Training Contacts' list.
- Click Edit Web Part to switch views and apply other customizations.
- 00:04 So now we've seen what an app part is, it's time for us to explore web parts.
- 00:08 And as I mentioned, there is quite a bit of overlap between app parts and
- 00:13 web parts.
- 00:14 And web parts are the original piece of content to add in.
- 00:18 They have been available in SharePoint since the beginning,
- 00:21 its app parts which are a more recent introduction.
- 00:24 But the type of content you can add using web parts,
- 00:27 in some cases is exactly the same as using app parts.
- 00:30 So for me, it is a little bit of overkill to have the two of them.
- 00:35 Nevertheless, let's put our page into edit mode and
- 00:38 take a look at how we can use web parts.
- 00:42 Now the first thing I'm going to do here is I'm going to do a bit of reorganizing
- 00:45 of the content on this page.
- 00:46 And again, this is just going to show you how you can very easily change the layout,
- 00:50 change where different web parts and app parts are placed on the page.
- 00:54 So this documents app part, I'm actually going to move that to underneath where we
- 00:59 have this text and these email links.
- 01:02 So to move any of your app or web parts, all you need to do is hover
- 01:07 your mouse over the title area until you see that crosshair.
- 01:11 Click and then just drag it to where you want it to be.
- 01:14 And you can see the cursor moving, so I'm going to place it just there.
- 01:19 Let go of the mouse and I now have those documents underneath.
- 01:23 So now those are out the way, I'm going to click in this blank area,
- 01:27 up to the Insert ribbon, and we're going to choose web part this time.
- 01:31 Now, the first thing you'll probably notice is that it looks exactly the same
- 01:36 as when we went in to app part.
- 01:37 And it is pretty much the same, we have different categories, different parts, and
- 01:42 then we have the actual web parts.
- 01:44 So again, this all depends on what type of content you want to add to your page.
- 01:49 I could go in and add another document library,
- 01:52 maybe I want to add the event calendar.
- 01:56 Maybe I want to add the master list of employees or
- 01:59 some other kind of site asset.
- 02:02 I could add a blog to my page.
- 02:05 I can even add some social collaboration.
- 02:07 Now there isn't a great deal in here but we do have something called site users,
- 02:11 which basically gives you some information about the people
- 02:14 who are members of your site.
- 02:16 We can also add different pieces of media and content.
- 02:19 So I could add an image viewer if I wanted to, which will just allow
- 02:24 me to show a nice image on my page or maybe even a page viewer.
- 02:28 So I could link to an external web page or maybe a page that's already within my
- 02:33 SharePoint site and display that in a viewer on this page.
- 02:37 Now I think I'm going to stick with what we know.
- 02:39 Let's go back to apps and I'm going to add my Training Contacts list.
- 02:45 So let's select it and click on Add.
- 02:49 It's going to go away and it's going to load those training contacts up.
- 02:54 Remember, if you want to display a particular view,
- 02:57 you can click the drop down and say edit web parts.
- 03:00 And then if you have any additional views, you can just select them from here.
- 03:04 And don't forget there's also other groups of customization utilities down here
- 03:09 as well.
- 03:09 So I can change things like the appearance of this particular web part.
- 03:14 Maybe I want to change the layout.
- 03:17 And I also have some advanced options down here as well.
- 03:21 Now I do recommend that you go through some of these, just have a little play
- 03:24 around and try them out just to see how they affect your web part.
- 03:27 But in essence, that is pretty much all there is to it.
- 03:31 So I'm going to go all the way down to the bottom click on OK.
- 03:35 And another thing to point out before we leave this lesson is when you
- 03:39 are clicked on a web part,
- 03:41 you will also get a new ribbon at the top here which says web part.
- 03:46 And this just gives you a few more options when it comes to managing that web part.
- 03:51 But for the time being, I'm pretty happy with how that looks.
- 03:54 Let's click on Save to save the page.
- 03:56 And now I have a nice app part and web part on my Wiki page.
