Creating Web Pages
Aside from Wiki pages, we can also create individual web pages and link to them. For example, we might create pages to display information for different teams or offices.
When to use
Create a new web page whenever you want to have a place to store content specific to a topic or team and link to the page from the home page.
Instructions
Notice in the Quick Launch menu, we have an item called Pages. Currently, the only page we have on the site is the Wiki Page or Home Page.
Adding New Web Pages
- From the horizontal menu, click New and select Page.
- We have a choice of page templates: Blank, Visual and Basic Text.
- Select Basic Text.
- Click Create Page.
A page consists of different parts and all parts can be customized.
- Click on one of the parts that contain sample text.
- Notice the floating menu that contains options to Move, Duplicate and Delete the part.
- Also, notice the floating formatting toolbar.
- Click on the part that contains the header image. This is a different part and so it has a different menu.
- We can Edit the web part, change image, set image focal point or reset.
- Click on the title and change the name of the page to 'London'.
- Click Change Image.
- Click Upload.
- Browse to the folder where the image is stored.
- Select the image and click Open.
- Click Add to load.
- Drag to set the focal point.
- Click Edit web part.
- Review the options.
- Layout: here we choose the layout of the part.
- Alignment: align the header text to center, left, or right.
- Toggle on Show text block above title.
- Type 'Europe' in the Text above title field.
- Toggle on Show published date.
- Close the pane
Publishing Pages and Adding to Site Navigation
- Click Publish.
- Click Add page to navigation.
- From the Quick Launch, select Edit.
- However over 'London' and click the three dots.
- Move up until the page is underneath the menu item Pages.
- Click the three dots and Make sub link.
- 00:04 Aside from creating Wiki pages, we can also create just individual web pages.
- 00:10 So these might be pages that you just want to have to display different pieces
- 00:15 of information.
- 00:16 So, for example, I might want to create a few different pages for
- 00:21 each of our head offices.
- 00:23 So I might have a page for London, which contains all of the information for
- 00:28 the London office, a page for New York, a page for Paris, so on and so forth.
- 00:33 So let's take a look at how we can create web pages in our SharePoint site.
- 00:37 Now the first thing to note here is if you look over at the Quick Launch menu,
- 00:41 you'll see that one of the menu items that you have in there by default is Pages.
- 00:46 Now currently, because I only have this wiki page, this homepage,
- 00:50 there is nothing showing underneath here.
- 00:53 So let's change that and create our first page.
- 00:56 So for this, we're going to jump up to our horizontal menu and
- 00:59 click the drop-down next to New, under the third option down is Page.
- 01:04 And what this is going to present you with are three different templates that you
- 01:08 can use to build your page.
- 01:10 We have a blank template if you want to really design it from scratch.
- 01:14 We have a visual template, and
- 01:16 you can see a preview of what that's going to look like.
- 01:19 Obviously, all of the images, all of the colors can be customized.
- 01:23 And then we have a basic text template.
- 01:26 So that's really just an image in the header and then a two column layout.
- 01:30 Now all of these can be customized, but
- 01:32 templates are always a really good place to give you somewhere to start from.
- 01:37 So I think I'm going to select this basic text template.
- 01:41 So all we need to do here is click on Create page at the bottom,
- 01:45 it's going to go away, open up this page, and I can now start customizing it.
- 01:50 Now notice with each of these different parts when I click on them, so
- 01:54 for example, if I click on this text area where it says How do you get started,
- 01:59 note the little menu that pops out to the side.
- 02:02 You can see here I have an option to move the web parts,
- 02:06 duplicate the web part, or delete the web part.
- 02:09 Also, because SharePoint has recognized that this little web part contains text,
- 02:15 it's given me a floating toolbar just above with some text formatting options.
- 02:20 If I click on the image just above, you'll notice that I get
- 02:24 a different floating menu because this is an image, and it's not text.
- 02:28 So I can edit the web part, I can change the image,
- 02:32 I can say set the image focal point, and I can reset to the default image.
- 02:38 So this is going to be the page for the London office.
- 02:42 So the first thing I'm going to do here where it says Add a name is,
- 02:46 I'm going to change this to London.
- 02:48 And all we need to do is free type over the top.
- 02:52 Now I'm going to change that background image to something more appropriate.
- 02:57 So we're going to use the floating menu, change image, and
- 03:01 I can then choose where my image is located.
- 03:04 Now it might be I want to use a stock image, I might want to search the web.
- 03:09 Maybe I have an image stored in OneDrive or somewhere else in my SharePoint site,
- 03:15 I can upload an image, or I can use the URL, so essentially from a link.
- 03:20 Now I have an image of London saved off to my local drive, so
- 03:25 I'm going to upload it and navigate to the correct folder.
- 03:29 So there is my images there, London.jpg.
- 03:33 Let's click open, and it's going to upload it into my SharePoint site.
- 03:38 Once it's uploaded, I can say Add image in the bottom right-hand corner, and
- 03:43 it's going to load that into the web parts.
- 03:45 Now something I can do once this image is loaded is I can change the focal point.
- 03:49 So if I'm not happy with the position or the placement of this image,
- 03:54 I can simply drag to move it around.
- 03:56 So I think I'm going to drag it down, and I think about there is perfect.
- 04:01 Now what else can I do here?
- 04:03 Well, I can choose to edit the web part, and this gives me a few more options.
- 04:09 So, for example, I can change the layout.
- 04:11 So currently, I'm displaying the image and the title,
- 04:14 I could choose to have it very plain.
- 04:16 I can choose Color block which changed it to something completely different or
- 04:21 Overlap.
- 04:21 Now I'm quite happy with the image and
- 04:24 title, I can choose the alignment of the text.
- 04:27 And then I can even choose to show a text block above the title.
- 04:30 So let me show you what this is.
- 04:32 I'm going to toggle on Show text block above title, and
- 04:36 you can see I get that little blue box.
- 04:38 And if I want to add some text to that, I can just click in TEXT ABOVE TITLE.
- 04:43 And maybe I want to let people know that this is for the European region.
- 04:47 I can also choose to show the published date of this page as well.
- 04:52 So lots of things that I can modify on this particular web part.
- 04:57 Once I'm happy, I just need to close down that editing pane, and
- 05:02 then I can go and work on the next web part.
- 05:05 So if I go down to where we have this text, this is pretty easy to work out.
- 05:08 I can delete out everything in here, and replace it with my own text.
- 05:13 And as I said, we have a floating toolbar just above to apply formatting to any
- 05:17 of the text that you see here.
- 05:19 Now of course, we're not stuck with just having text added to this page,
- 05:23 we can add all different sorts of content to our pages.
- 05:27 Things like YouTube videos, Twitter feeds, weather information,
- 05:31 geographical information, all kinds of stuff.
- 05:34 I'm going to show you how to do that a bit later on in this section.
- 05:38 For the time being, let's just stick to our basic pages.
- 05:40 I'm going to click the Publish button, which is going to set that page live.
- 05:45 Now as soon as you publish your page for the first time,
- 05:48 you're going to get a few additional options.
- 05:50 And one of these is particularly useful because it says Add this page
- 05:55 to the navigation.
- 05:56 Now I want people to be able to access this London web page from that quick
- 06:01 launch menu.
- 06:02 So I'm going to say yes, add to page navigation.
- 06:05 I'm going to close down, and
- 06:07 you can now see right at the bottom there I have my page.
- 06:12 Now, I don't want this sitting on its own down there,
- 06:15 I want this to show underneath this pages section.
- 06:19 So let's edit our navigation menu and move it up.
- 06:23 So we going to click the three dots, move up and
- 06:25 this can be quite a slow process if you have quite a way to go, which I do.
- 06:29 So we going to carry on moving this up until we
- 06:34 get it underneath where it says Pages.
- 06:39 There we go.
- 06:40 And then I'm going to make this a sub link, so
- 06:43 it indents very slightly and click on Save.
- 06:47 So now I have this little expandable drop down,
- 06:50 which is going to show me all of my pages and that is how I want this organized.
- 06:54 I could then, of course, go in and add a brand-new page.
- 06:57 So let's go to New, Page, I'm going to stick with basic text, Create Page.
- 07:04 This one is going to be for the New York office.
- 07:07 I'm going to do exactly the same thing,
- 07:10 I'm going to change the image, I'm going to upload it.
- 07:14 There it is.
- 07:17 I'm going to click Add image.
- 07:19 Let's set that focal point.
- 07:21 So I'm going to drag, I think about there is going to be fine.
- 07:26 I can edit the web part, I'm going to show a text block above the title and
- 07:32 this one is going to say North America.
- 07:35 Click on Close, make any other changes that you need to make.
- 07:40 Publish the page, add the page to your navigation, and
- 07:45 then you can edit that menu and move the page up.
- 07:49 Once you've got it in the right spot, again we want to make this a sub link.
- 07:53 Click on Save, and now I have my two office pages.
