Using Tool Tips

Quick reference

• 00:04 In this video I want to talk about tooltips.
• 00:06 So let's start out by bringing over our breed, and our count, as we always do.
• 00:12 And let's also do a quick filter here, and just make this 2,000 like, we have before.
• 00:20 Okay, so we've got this data here.
• 00:22 Now, when we hover over these things, a little box that pops up, that's a tooltip.
• 00:26 And we've looked at tooltips before, this is sort of a common thing.
• 00:29 It's just an easy way to, at a glance,
• 00:31 get your information here, right?
• 00:33 So lab mix 5,558, beagles 2,338, right?
• 00:39 That's great.
• 00:40 Well, what if you want to add other things to that tooltip,
• 00:43 other bits of information?
• 00:45 Well, remember earlier we did the percentage of the total.
• 00:47 So, let's add the percentage of the total just to the tooltip.
• 00:51 Now, we don't want to change this chart.
• 00:52 We don't want sort of these rows, and columns to change in anyway.
• 00:56 We don't want to add an extra dimension, or measure to the chart itself.
• 01:01 We just wanted to show up in the tooltip, and only in the tooltip.
• 01:04 Well, that's where this little box down here is for.
• 01:07 So, we can, remember, we grab this, hold the control button.
• 01:11 Bring it down, and hover over the tooltips.
• 01:13 You see when I sort of hover over it, it turns a little dark.
• 01:17 Like, when we did the label thing earlier, same deal.
• 01:20 Make sure it's highlighted, and then let it go.
• 01:22 You can see, boom, it pops in right underneath, and
• 01:24 there's a little picture of a tooltip there, right?
• 01:26 So now, we can click on this, change this,
• 01:29 do a quick table calculation to percentage of total.
• 01:31 And we can see nothing here has changed.
• 01:33 This chart hasn't changed, the labels haven't changed,
• 01:36 the size of it, the different bars, the heights haven't changed.
• 01:40 Nothing has changed here, but when we hover over here,
• 01:44 now we had the percent of total in the tooltip, 25.82%, for beagles it's 6.42%.
• 01:51 So very, very cool, and very easy, and very useful.
• 01:55 So you can add all kinds of things here.
• 01:57 We don't have a lot of different measures up here, we have an expiration year.
• 02:01 We can maybe drag that in as a tooltip.
• 02:04 It's going to be 2018 for all of these.
• 02:06 So you can see our tooltip now, says EXP year, expiration year 2018.
• 02:12 Now, they all say, 2018, because if we go back, and
• 02:15 look at our data source, the expiration year for all of these is 2018.
• 02:19 If I scroll, through here, we can see they are all 2018,
• 02:23 because the data set we downloaded was information from 2018, all right?
• 02:28 So that's how that works.
• 02:31 But you get the idea, of using tooltips, so pretty cool.
• 02:35 Now, we can come back over here, and play around with this, and
• 02:38 the same thing happens here.
• 02:40 Now, these tooltips are still being shown, even though we added them for
• 02:44 a different chart.
• 02:45 A lot of times when we add things on a chart,
• 02:48 they don't carry forward from one visualization to the next.
• 02:51 When we change our Show Me menu right here, right?
• 02:55 But this does.
• 02:56 Right, we're still seeing the expiration year 2018,
• 03:00 still seeing the percent of total, right.
• 03:04 Very cool. So that's all for this video.
