Adding Multiple Fields Using 'Show Me'
In this lesson, you'll learn how to create Visualizations with Multiple fields using the "Show Me" Tab.
When to use
Use this as a shortcut to create Visualizations with one or more fields.
Instructions
Select the multiple Dimensions and Measures you would like to use in your Visualization by holding down the "Control" button ("Command" on Mac) on your Keyboard and selecting each Dimension or Measure Pill.
Once selected, instead of dragging them onto the Worksheet, simply click the "Show Me" Button and choose your chart or graph.
Hints & tips
- Use the Control Button (Command Button on Mac) to select multiple Dimensions and Measures
- Once selected, click the "Show Me" button to choose your chart or graph.
- 00:04 Today in this video,
- 00:05 I want to show you how to add multiple fields using the Show Me tab.
- 00:08 So up until now, we've been creating all our visualizations by just grabbing
- 00:12 a pill, bringing it over, dropping into these shelves here.
- 00:15 I can do it like this.
- 00:16 And we've talked about adding multiple fields by just grabbing multiple pills and
- 00:20 dragging them over and dropping them.
- 00:22 And that will work, but sometimes you're just kind of in a hurry and
- 00:25 there's another way you can do it that can be a little faster.
- 00:28 And that is to just select these pills over here all at once, and then just come
- 00:32 over here to the Show Me and then pick whatever graph or chart that you want.
- 00:37 So to do that, we could for instance, grab Breed.
- 00:39 Now, I'm just going to click on it one time with my mouse button here, and
- 00:43 you can see that it highlights.
- 00:44 Now if I click something else like Color,
- 00:47 that highlights and then the first one is unhighlighted.
- 00:52 So we can only sort of select one at a time.
- 00:55 But if you hold down your Ctrl key, Cmd if you're on a Mac, and
- 00:58 then select more than one, you can see they both become selected.
- 01:02 And then we can grab whichever ones we want.
- 01:04 We can select them all the while holding down the Ctrl key.
- 01:07 And then we can come down here and pick our measure.
- 01:09 Again, continuing to hold the Ctrl key, and then boom it highlights.
- 01:13 Now if you accidentally hit the Shift key, for instance, if I came down here and
- 01:17 did this, it's going to select all of the ones in between.
- 01:20 So if you want to do them all at once, you could select this one and
- 01:23 then hold down the Shift key.
- 01:24 And then come down to the last one, you can see they highlight them all.
- 01:27 I don't recommend that you do that.
- 01:28 We don't want to do that in this case.
- 01:30 Same thing if we select two of them here, and then come down and
- 01:33 accidentally hit the Shift key, it's going to grab all of them in between.
- 01:36 So you don't want to do that, be sure to just hold down the Ctrl button.
- 01:39 That's for Windows users or on a Mac, it's the Cmd button, I believe.
- 01:43 And so we can just do this.
- 01:46 Select the things that we want, and then, come over to Show Me and click it and
- 01:49 then you could just select whichever chart that you want.
- 01:52 So if we wanted this guy right here, boom, you can see it sort of populates
- 01:57 the pills onto the shelves that this specific chart or graph requires.
- 02:03 If we highlight this one instead, if you click that, and you can see boom,
- 02:06 they're all listed here.
- 02:07 If we wanted to packed bubbles, we could do it like that, and just that easy.
- 02:11 Now, you may be curious why some of these charts and graphs are available to us.
- 02:17 You can see they're sort of full color.
- 02:20 The other ones are sort of grayed out.
- 02:22 And we sort of touched on this, but
- 02:23 I haven't really spent a lot of time talking about it.
- 02:25 I might as well mention it now.
- 02:26 If you actually hover over each one of these, down here at the bottom and
- 02:30 this section right here, you can see it tells you the requirements for
- 02:34 that particular graph.
- 02:36 So for instance, this bar chart, it requires zero or more dimensions and
- 02:40 one or more measures.
- 02:42 You see right down here, that's what it says.
- 02:44 I can't move the mouse because, there we go, right?
- 02:47 So if you want packed bubbles, you can see for packed bubbles,
- 02:51 you need one or more dimensions and one or two measures.
- 02:56 For instance, line charts, you need one date, zero or more dimensions, and
- 03:01 one or more measures.
- 03:02 We don't have a date in this particular instance, so the line chart won't show up.
- 03:08 If we were to go ahead and clear this whole thing and start over again and
- 03:13 grab a Valid Date and measure, you can see now the line charts are available to us.
- 03:19 Because one of the requirements for a line chart is a valid date.
- 03:23 And you see now we've selected dates.
- 03:24 Now, the line charts are available to us.
- 03:26 So we'll get into line charts and things like that a little bit later.
- 03:29 So that's another way to sort of create visualizations using the Show Me instead
- 03:33 of dragging and dropping things.
- 03:34 That's a way to use more than one dimension or measure,
- 03:39 hold down the Ctrl button, and then click your Show Me.
- 03:44 Click, boom, there you go, and pretty cool.
- 03:46 So that's all for this video.
- 03:47 In the next video, we'll look at creating custom measures.
