Adding Blank Space - How And Why
In this lesson, you'll learn how and why to add blank space to your Dashboard.
When to use
Use this technique whenver your Dashboard gets a little cluttered and you need to add some whitespace to make things a little easier to read.
Instructions
To add blank space to your Dashboard, drag the "Blank" object from the Object Panel.
Drop the blank space wherever you need space on your Dashboard.
Resize the blank space appropriately.
Hints & tips
- To add blank space, just drag and drop a "Blank" object onto your Dashboard.
- 00:04 Okay, in this video I want to talk about adding blank spaces.
- 00:07 So up until now we've just been sort of dragging things, and dropping things,
- 00:11 and everything sort of shmushed together.
- 00:13 Yes, shmushed is the technical term for this.
- 00:16 And it's all very busy looking, right, it's kind of hard to read.
- 00:20 I mean it's okay, but there's a lot going on here.
- 00:24 So people tend to do this, they try to cram as much as they can and
- 00:26 the kitchen sink into each of their dashboards.
- 00:28 And I get that you want all your information in there, but
- 00:32 you might want to think about adding blank space to make things easier to read and
- 00:36 we can do that in several different ways.
- 00:39 Here we have a blank tile right here, we can just grab this and drag it around.
- 00:44 And say I want one right here, right, so boom,
- 00:46 all of a sudden there's a big blank space there.
- 00:50 Now this is obviously too big, we can change this around a little, right,
- 00:54 maybe we just want a little bit of a blank space right there.
- 00:57 And just that easy everything is a little bit easier to read, right,
- 01:01 there's a little bit more blank space there.
- 01:04 And maybe you're not done there, maybe you pull another one over here,
- 01:08 you pop another one in there.
- 01:11 Resize this, obviously we're going to need to move these floating tiles around.
- 01:16 Pull this over, and pull this one over.
- 01:23 However we like.
- 01:27 And maybe resize this a bit.
- 01:33 At this point I'm just playing because this is fun, but
- 01:35 you're starting to get the idea.
- 01:37 Now, just adding a little bit of white space makes everything
- 01:41 a little bit easier to read.
- 01:43 And maybe this is too much whitespace, maybe you just want a little bit,
- 01:47 resize it like this, and just a little bit there, see.
- 01:51 And same thing here, maybe we just want a little bit just to add just enough to make
- 01:56 some separation between our different areas, and
- 01:59 I think that's really important.
- 02:01 So we can do the same thing here for instance.
- 02:04 And it's kind of a little hard to get this exactly,
- 02:08 because when you're dropping these things in, actually let's.
- 02:13 When you're dropping these things in, okay, as you can see it's
- 02:19 a little tricky to get this just right but play around with this.
- 02:25 There we go.
- 02:26 And you can see it's subtle, and it's a subtle thing, right.
- 02:31 So we do one more over here for instance.
- 02:34 Boom, try and get these to line up a bit.
- 02:40 There we go.
- 02:41 Okay, so starting to look a little bit better, and
- 02:44 it just adds a little something, a little separation.
- 02:47 Now maybe this needs to be edited so that it's not centered anymore.
- 02:52 And we might then, I don't know, just put some space in, maybe a little bit more,
- 02:59 just to make this look a little centered even though it's not centered
- 03:04 because we've moved stuff over, right, and it's all coming together.
- 03:09 And like I said, it's very subtle, just a little bit of whitespace,
- 03:14 a little bit of blank space here and there between things can make a world of
- 03:18 difference in order to make things easier to read, make it feel not so cluttered,
- 03:23 and just maybe a little bit more professional.
- 03:26 Oops, we need to move these around.
- 03:29 One of the big problems with adding blank spaces is if you have floating tiles they
- 03:33 won't resize automatically.
- 03:35 So you'll have to go in and resize all your floating tiles, but
- 03:37 that's not a big deal, we just kind of move them around just like we just did.
- 03:41 And that's starting to look pretty good, so that's all for this video.
- 03:43 In the next video we'll look at creating stories.
