Text-to-Vector Generator
Learn how to work with the new text-to-vector features in Adobe Illustrator.
When to use
The text-to-vector generator can be very useful when putting together quick concepts or references, and they should always be modified to add your own twist!
Instructions
Generate Patterns
- Begin by making a square on your artboard and then go to the Object Menu and choose Pattern > Generate Patterns (Beta)
- When the Generate Patterns (Beta) dialog box appears, enter a prompt. Here we will be trying 'Breakfast food' as a jumping off point.
- After entering your prompt, Illustrator will generate 3 new patterns, any of which you can apply to your rectangle or any other shape.
Generate Vectors
- Begin by creating another square on your artboard and go to the Object Menu and choose Generate Vectors (Beta) from the dropdown.
- From here you can choose whether you'd like Illustrator to generate a Scene, Subject, or Icon using a prompt.
- In this example, we will generate a scene and enter a prompt such as 'Lavish indoor party, gala, chandaliers and stairs' and click 'Generate'.
- Illustrator will once again create three randomly generated vector scenes.
- If you don't like any of the results, you can simply click 'Generate' once again to get 3 entirely different results.
- To the right side of the panel, you will also have some 'Prompt inspiration' to help you get some ideas.
- Notice that you can adjust the Detail slider to give you more or less detail when generating your vectors.
Gen Shape Fill
- The next example we'll take a look allows us to fill any shape with an AI generated vector.
- Create a custom shape using a combination of the Shape Tools and the Pathfinder.
- Fill your shape with solid black.
- Go to the Object Menu and choose 'Gen Shape Fill (Beta) from the dropdown menu.
- Choose one of the Color Presets such as 'Cool tone' and adjust your level of detail.
- Go to the 'Effects' section and choose 'Geometric' or another art style that you'd like to try.
- Now enter your prompt and click 'Generate' to see your custom shape filled with an AI generated vector result.
Hints & tips
- When generating vectors with the new AI features, most of them will allow you to upload your own image as a 'Style Reference' that will influence the results.
- You can also apply certain Effects to have your results made in a specific style.
- Under 'Color and Tone' you can choose how many colors you'd like your results to be, along with any specific colors that you want included.
- If you don't like any of the 3 options Illustrator gives you, you can click the 'Generate' button again to get new and different results.
