About this lesson
Verbal and non-verbal communication aren't taught in schools but can be a key factor for your success.
- 00:04 If you're this far into the course,
- 00:06 I probably don't have to sell you on the importance of communication skills.
- 00:09 If you didn't think they were important, why would you be here?
- 00:13 But I do think it's important to kind of step back for just a moment and
- 00:18 put it in perspective.
- 00:19 When you look at the most successful people in any field,
- 00:23 whether it's politics, business, high tech, finance, even the sciences,
- 00:29 so much of what that person does all day long is they communicate.
- 00:35 They speak to investors, to voters, to employees,
- 00:39 to vendors, to customers, to clients.
- 00:43 They have to listen to the concerns of their Investors,
- 00:47 of their customers, of their clients, of their patients.
- 00:52 The higher you go up in any career, other than perhaps writing novels,
- 00:57 it's about how will you communicate in a non-written way.
- 01:01 Now, obviously writing is a form of communication.
- 01:05 That's the form of communication we're going to
- 01:08 spend the least amount of time here in this course,
- 01:12 because it is something that's taught every day in school your entire life.
- 01:17 What's not taught is how to communicate by speaking,
- 01:20 verbal communication, nonverbal communication.
- 01:24 Basically any form of communication other than writing or
- 01:28 typing, that's what isn't taught.
- 01:31 And yet, ultimately, that's what could decide whether
- 01:36 your career ends here, here, here, or down here.
- 01:41 So I want to congratulate you for devoting some time, investing your energy,
- 01:47 your resources into improving yourself as a communicator.
- 01:52 And I would just want to redouble those efforts for you.
- 01:56 Because again, you look at the successful people you admire,
- 02:01 they might not be silver-tongued orators, but they are good communicators.
- 02:07 Even someone you think of who is not your favorite politician,
- 02:11 doesn't give a great speech.
- 02:13 Even people like that, you see them in a small room, one on one or with ten people,
- 02:18 they can have contributors eating out of the palm of their hands.
- 02:21 Now, you may have no interest in running for office or ever asking for money.
- 02:26 But I guarantee you, there are aspects of your life, your personal life,
- 02:32 your professional life, where you can benefit by being a better communicator.
- 02:39 So that's why as we go through this whole course,
- 02:41 you're going to see some sections that will apply to you, some that don't.
- 02:44 Pick and choose as you see fit.
