Understanding Text Formatting
There are many ways to format text, in this video we'll look at <strong>, <em>, , , <blockquote>
When to use
Whenever you want to format text, there are many options to choose from depending on the desired effect.
Instructions
<strong> and <strong> will create bold text.
<em> and </em> will create italics text.
 and will push text up.
 and will push text down.
<blockquote> and </blockquote> will put text in quotes with a slight indentation.
<small> and </small> will make the text small.
Hints & tips
- <strong> makes text bold
- <em> makes text italics
- pushes text up
- pushes text down
- <blockquotes> indents text
- <small> makes text small
- 00:04 In this video, I wanna talk about basic text formatting.
- 00:08 So let's type in, Let's Format Some Text.
- 00:14 And if we save this and come back here, click reload,
- 00:18 in fact let's get rid of some of this stuff.
- 00:23 Okay, just to clean things up a little bit, let's format some text.
- 00:26 Hit reload, let's format some text.
- 00:29 This is just basic text right here, there's no formatting whatsoever.
- 00:32 But let's say we want to make this bold.
- 00:34 Then you would use the <strong> tag.
- 00:39 You can see my editor is automatically putting the closing tag.
- 00:44 So if we save this and hit reload, boom, now we get this bold text.
- 00:49 Now let's say we want to make it italicized.
- 00:50 Well for that, we use <em> and <em>
- 00:56 stands for emphasis.
- 01:01 Hit reload, now we have this italics.
- 01:04 Like we said earlier, you can nest your tags.
- 01:09 So you could do something like this and have strong and emphasis.
- 01:16 And when you nest your tags the closest one gets closed first so
- 01:20 this one would close it right away and this one goes next.
- 01:25 So this outside this is the inside.
- 01:28 So you always want to close the one closest to the text so
- 01:31 the one touching the L, that is the closest one, so you close it first.
- 01:35 It's just sort of a convention.
- 01:37 So what else?
- 01:38 Let's get rid of this strong and the emphasis and
- 01:43 This Text Up and
- 01:48 This Text Down.
- 01:52 Neat!
- 01:52 So, there's a tag called and .
- 01:55 So, S-U-P, And
- 02:02 if we save this, we see this.
- 02:05 Up has been bopped up a little bit.
- 02:07 And the same thing if we go , copy.
- 02:15 Save this.
- 02:18 Up and down.
- 02:19 So that's kind of cool.
- 02:20 Finally, there's a tag I wanna talk about called the block quote.
- 02:24 And I'm gonna head over to our Lorem Ipsum thing and let's go back and
- 02:29 generate two paragraphs, I guess.
- 02:31 Doesn't really matter but let's go two.
- 02:35 And we copy this and come back over here, and
- 02:40 type in <blockquote>, oops, Q-U-O-T-E.
- 02:45 And if we paste this in, whatever, save it.
- 02:49 Then you can't really tell, so
- 02:53 let's put a line of that there and
- 02:58 a line of it below and save this.
- 03:02 Now, you can see.
- 03:03 So this is the standard on top and bottom.
- 03:06 <blockquote> bops everything in and it indents everything.
- 03:11 And we can use CSS to style this, and
- 03:13 put big quotation marks around it to make it look like a block quote, or
- 03:17 to italicize it, or anything we want and we'll talk about CSS stuff later.
- 03:23 But that's block quote.
- 03:25 So those are some basic tags, strong, emphasis.
- 03:28 You'll use strong all the time, you'll use emphasis all the time.
- 03:32 One more, let's see, we can talk about small.
- 03:38 And copy that, I'm just gonna put it right there.
- 03:43 Save this, come back,
- 03:45 you can see this text here is a little bit smaller than the rest of it.
- 03:50 So, that's the small tag, I'm not really sure why you would use that but
- 03:53 it's kinda neat.
- 03:53 So strong, emphasis, small, sub, sup.
- 03:56 Sup one to push things up.
- 03:58 The sub one that bring things down.
- 04:00 Again you're not gonna use that very often, but it's kinda neat.
- 04:02 And the block quote, you're gonna use that one all the time.
- 04:05 Especially if you do create a blog or something like that.
- 04:08 So in the next video I wanna talk about doing some text formatting with something
- 04:11 called inline CSS.
