About this lesson
Still nervous before your interview? Record yourself first and eliminate any doubts.
-
00:04
So let's say you've done all the exercises so far, you've watched all the videos and
-
00:09
you're still nervous about that job interview.
-
00:12
What are the things you can do to reduce the nerves?
-
00:15
For starters, give yourself extra time.
-
00:19
If something takes you a half an hour to get there, and
-
00:22
your job interviews is at 11:00, don't leave the house at 10:30.
-
00:26
Because even if everything goes well, you may find yourself walking very quickly,
-
00:31
that lasts two blocks to get to the job interview and you could be sweating.
-
00:35
You don't want to get there, and all of a sudden, no, I'm sweating,
-
00:40
I'm perspiring, I'm oily.
-
00:42
Give yourself plenty of time, and allow for a bus delay,
-
00:47
a mass transit delay, traffic jam.
-
00:50
If you're driving, give yourself extra time.
-
00:52
If something takes you a half an hour to get there,
-
00:55
give yourself a full hour so that you have plenty of time.
-
00:59
Before you walk in, you're collected, you're not rushed, you're not out of
-
01:04
breath, you're not flush, you're not sweaty, and you're completely comfortable.
-
01:10
Okay, now for the number one tip on how to completely
-
01:14
eliminate your nerves, here is exactly what you need to do.
-
01:20
Find a friend, colleague, a family member,
-
01:23
tell them the company you're interviewing with.
-
01:27
Give them a few sample questions you think that the person interviewing you might
-
01:31
ask, some of them are obvious.
-
01:33
Why should we hire you?
-
01:34
Tell me about yourself.
-
01:36
Why are you interested in this position?
-
01:38
Have your friend, family member, colleague, asked you these questions.
-
01:44
But here's the trick, you're not going to like this.
-
01:47
But it's the number one thing you can do to get rid of nerves.
-
01:50
Give your family member, friend, a cell phone, and
-
01:55
have them record the entire fake practice job interview with you.
-
02:02
I know you don't want to do it, but guess what?
-
02:04
You need to do it because if you're in the job interview and
-
02:07
you're nervous and all of a sudden, you're doing this.
-
02:10
Doesn't really matter how good your answers are, you're
-
02:13
not going to leave a good impression with that individual interviewing you.
-
02:17
They're going to think you're a little strange or high strung or weird.
-
02:23
So that's why you need to practice on video.
-
02:25
What makes us nervous quite often is not knowing how we come across.
-
02:30
Are we speaking too quickly?
-
02:31
Are we speaking too softly?
-
02:33
Are we somehow shouting and we're not aware of it?
-
02:36
It's very easy to find out, you just record.
-
02:41
And then you have to watch it, I know you don't want to watch it.
-
02:46
TJ, I don't like my face, I don't like my voice.
-
02:49
Well, guess what?
-
02:50
The person who's interviewing you has to look at your face, so
-
02:54
you might as well do it too.
-
02:56
The person interviewing you has to listen to your voice, so
-
02:59
you might as well know how it comes across.
-
03:02
So you've got to have your friend, colleague,
-
03:05
family member interview you, you've got to record it on video.
-
03:10
If you don't record it on video, it really doesn't help much.
-
03:15
And that's the same with practicing in front of a mirror,
-
03:18
that doesn't really help.
-
03:19
You practice in front of the mirror and words are coming out of your mouth, but
-
03:23
you're thinking, was my nose a little crooked or I never know, my eyes too.
-
03:28
Don't practice your job interview answers in front of a mirror,
-
03:33
practice with someone asking you the questions and
-
03:38
you videotape it and you watch it.
-
03:41
But you've gotta watch it really carefully,
-
03:43
you gotta figure out what do you like, what do you not like.
-
03:46
If you notice that the first two minutes of an eight minute interview,
-
03:51
you're speaking really quickly and rushed, make a note of that and
-
03:56
practice it again consciously speaking slower in the first two minutes.
-
04:01
So that even though you are nervous, you don't appear to be nervous.
-
04:06
So here's the real trick,
-
04:08
you have to keep practicing until you like your answers on video.
-
04:14
You gotta like how you look, how you sound,
-
04:17
how you move, because you can have the best answers in the world.
-
04:21
If you're kind of like sitting back like this arms crossed, it's going to be
-
04:26
extraordinarily difficult to leave a good impression with that interviewer.
-
04:31
You need to be leaning forward when you're talking to this person interviewing,
-
04:36
you need to be leaning forward, listening to them.
-
04:38
Your hands actually need to move.
-
04:40
You shouldn't be holding pencils, holding books in the middle of the job interview,
-
04:45
you shouldn't be sitting on your hands.
-
04:47
You should do it all people do when they're comfortable talking,
-
04:51
their hands move.
-
04:53
Disregard all the sitcom advice about how you're likely to be nervous and do this.
-
04:57
No, people don't actually do that, in my experience.
-
05:01
So you want your hands to move naturally.
-
05:05
Now, if absolutely nobody will rehearse with you, then just practice yourself,
-
05:11
ask yourself a question, hit record on your video and tape it.
-
05:15
And keep doing that until you like it.
-
05:18
Now, it may be you do it in one take and you love it, you're confident and
-
05:22
you're ready to go in.
-
05:24
It may be you have to do 100 days, I don't care how many it takes.
-
05:27
But if you want to get over nervousness, number one way of doing it is
-
05:33
practice your answers on video until you love every aspect of style and substance.
-
05:39
Do take after take, after take, if that's what it takes.
-
05:43
Now, this will get faster, this will get easier.
-
05:45
The more job interviews you go on, you'll spend less time on this because you'll get
-
05:49
better at it, you'll get more familiar with it.
-
05:51
But don't just think in your head about your answers.
-
05:55
Don't just write it down.
-
05:57
Don't just rely on your memo.
-
05:59
You must practice your answers on video.
-
06:02
Watch it, listen to it, until you like it, then your nerves will disappear.
