Topic
This lesson will show you how to insert a video file onto our Keynote canvas.
When to use
Adding video to a slide can do wonders for the quality of your presentation. In this lesson, we’ll walk through how to add a video and make adjustments to that video to make it look great.
Instructions
There are two ways to insert a video file in Keynote:
- by clicking the Media button on the toolbar
- by dragging and dropping an audio file from our computer
To preview a video file, we simply click on the “Play” button located in the middle of the video preview.
Selecting the video clip will adjust our formatting pane allowing us to:
- add a style to a video like we can for images
- add a border to our video
- add a drop shadow to our video
- add a reflection to our video
- adjust the opacity
Trimming (or cropping) a video is easy. We:
- select the video
- adjust the trim settings on the formatting pane
A poster frame is the static frame that will show before and after a video is played. We adjust this:
- select the video
- use the “Poster Image” slider to select the poster frame
There are two repeat options:
- loop
- loop back and forth
The “Loop Back and Forth” option allows us to create a seamless video loop without harsh breaks.
When the “Start movie on click” option is checked, the movie will only play when we advance the slide deck.
To add a little extra style to a video, we can rotate our video clip:
- select the video file
- adjust the rotate option on the formatting pane
- 00:04 Working with video is one of my favorites,
- 00:06 when it comes to working on KeyNote projects.
- 00:09 Not only can it add a creative element towards our Slide Deck, but
- 00:11 it can go a long way to impress our audience.
- 00:14 Who doesn't love a good movie, right?
- 00:16 So let's look at how we can use video to enhance our slides.
- 00:20 First let's talk about insertion of video clip.
- 00:23 This can be done in one of two ways.
- 00:25 We can either use the media button on the toolbar to browse for
- 00:28 an insert our video clip.
- 00:30 Or we can simply drag and drop a video clip from our Desktop or
- 00:34 any other finder window on our computer.
- 00:37 Either way, this will result in a video being placed on our canvas.
- 00:41 This is okay, but let's look at how we can dress this up a little bit.
- 00:45 First, let's explore our style tab on the formatting pane.
- 00:49 The first option we have, is to add a styles to our video.
- 00:53 Just like with pictures, we can choose to add border's to our video.
- 00:56 This doesn't make sense if we plan to play our video in full-screen mode.
- 01:00 But if we want it to play as a component of our slide, it may make a lot of sense.
- 01:05 One of my favorite borders is the curved shadow frame.
- 01:09 It adds a nice depth to our video.
- 01:11 If we want to look for other border styles,
- 01:13 we can look under the border section.
- 01:15 Here, we can choose from several line styles,
- 01:18 as well as additional three dimensional borders.
- 01:21 Other options include, one of three drop shadow types to choose from, a reflection.
- 01:26 As well as adjusting the video's opacity.
- 01:29 One note on the reflection option.
- 01:31 If we choose to add a reflection,
- 01:32 the reflection is a mirror image of the lower portion of the video.
- 01:36 Giving the appearance of the video sitting on top of a reflective surface.
- 01:40 Very cinematic in quality.
- 01:43 Next, let's take a look at some of the editing options we have when
- 01:46 working with video.
- 01:48 As with audio clips, we have our play controls here.
- 01:51 Which are great for testing video playback as we are designing our slide.
- 01:55 Below our play controls, we will find tools for trimming our video clip.
- 02:00 To trim video off the beginning, we simply drag our start point inward.
- 02:04 To trim video off the end, we do the same with our end point.
- 02:08 When we're done,
- 02:09 we have a shorter video which will only play the segment we want to play.
- 02:13 You'll notice, that as we drag the start and
- 02:15 end points in, the preview video will play.
- 02:17 Giving us an idea of where the play head is in our editing routine.
- 02:22 Below the trimming feature, we have a poster frame option.
- 02:25 The poster frame is a single frame contained within the video.
- 02:28 That will give the audience of glimpse of what the video is before it's played.
- 02:33 It could be the first frame of the video, it could be the last frame of the video.
- 02:36 Or, it could be somewhere in the middle.
- 02:38 This is where we can choose that poster frame.
- 02:41 The last editing options we have, is the repeat.
- 02:44 We can choose to either repeat the video over and over and over again endlessly.
- 02:48 Or we can choose to repeat the video endlessly in a back and forth fashion.
- 02:52 This probably doesn't make sense for most videos.
- 02:55 But if you use your imagination, you can probably think of a few scenarios.
- 02:58 Where it could have a positive impact to your audience.
- 03:02 This check box allows us to control when the video plays.
- 03:05 Either as the slide is initially viewed or
- 03:08 when we advance using a key on our keyboard.
- 03:10 Or, using a presentation remote.
- 03:13 I want to show you one more little trick when working with video.
- 03:16 If you're looking to add a little extra style to your slide,
- 03:19 we may want to choose to slightly rotate your video.
- 03:23 This can help to add a little character and personality to your slide.
- 03:26 To do this we will make our way over to the arrange tab on the formatting pane.
- 03:31 Near the bottom of the pane, you will notice a rotate option.
- 03:34 By rotating this handle around, we can rotate our video clip.
- 03:38 This combined with a nice style or border can help add a fun vibe to your slide.
- 03:44 Okay, this is where I stop talking and you start exploring.
- 03:47 Take a few minutes now and take this feature for a test drive.
- 03:50 See what you can do with the options you've been given.
