Notes
Definition of Mentoring
Mentoring is a relationship where knowledge, skills, and experiences are shared to support personal and professional growth. Mentoring has been used for centuries to pass down knowledge from experienced individuals to the less experienced.
Benefits of Mentoring
- For mentees: Personalized guidance and support, accelerated professional growth through valuable insights.
- For mentors: Opportunity to pass on knowledge, develop leadership skills, and personal learning experiences.
Mentoring vs Managing
Managers oversee team outputs and conduct. Mentors focus on fostering personal growth and development in their mentees.
Login to download- 00:04 Hey there, welcome to this course on mentoring.
- 00:07 My name is Dan Gorgone, and I'm the course producer at GoSkills.
- 00:11 I've been lucky enough in my professional career to have multiple mentors,
- 00:15 and I've served as a mentor for others, so
- 00:18 I'm excited to share best practices and lessons learned.
- 00:22 If you're thinking about becoming a mentor or
- 00:25 perhaps going to have a mentor of your own, this course will help a lot.
- 00:30 In this first lesson, we'll introduce the concept of mentoring and
- 00:34 explore its significance for business and professional development.
- 00:38 So what exactly is mentoring?
- 00:41 At its core, mentoring is a relationship between two individuals aimed at sharing
- 00:46 knowledge, skills, and experiences to support personal and professional growth.
- 00:52 Now mentoring has been around for centuries.
- 00:55 Historically, mentoring has been a means for passing down knowledge and
- 01:00 expertise from experienced individuals to those who are less experienced.
- 01:04 This could mean sharing a process or a tradition, meaningful facts or
- 01:10 ideas, or providing advice through adversity.
- 01:14 In today's fast-paced and ever-changing work environment,
- 01:18 mentoring has become even more essential.
- 01:21 It helps people navigate their careers, overcome challenges, and
- 01:26 unlock their full potential.
- 01:28 Now there are many benefits of mentoring.
- 01:31 For mentees, mentoring provides personalized guidance and
- 01:35 support, which helps them identify and achieve their goals.
- 01:40 Mentees gain valuable insights from their mentor's experiences,
- 01:44 which can fast-track their professional growth.
- 01:48 For mentors, the act of mentoring can be incredibly rewarding.
- 01:52 Mentors have the opportunity to pass on their knowledge and expertise,
- 01:57 leaving a lasting impact on their mentees' lives and careers.
- 02:02 Mentoring also allows mentors to develop their leadership and
- 02:06 coaching skills, and the mentoring relationship can absolutely
- 02:11 provide learning opportunities for the mentor as well.
- 02:15 But one quick aside before we jump into the rest of the course,
- 02:20 I want to make a clear distinction, managing is not the same as mentoring.
- 02:25 Managers or supervisors, team leaders,
- 02:28 whatever you want to call them, their role is to manage their team,
- 02:33 and they're ultimately responsible for the output and
- 02:37 conduct of their team within the context of a larger organization.
- 02:42 Mentors, on the other hand, are there to provide guidance and share knowledge.
- 02:48 Their responsibility is to their mentee,
- 02:51 helping foster personal growth and development.
- 02:56 In a perfect world, managers would also be mentors all the time,
- 03:02 but not every manager has the capacity or
- 03:06 even the skill set to do both, and that's okay.
- 03:10 Over the years, I've learned far more from some managers compared to others,
- 03:16 and I've had mentors who were not my manager, and
- 03:19 the relationship was always very rewarding.
- 03:22 So keep this in mind as we move forward because mentoring requires key skills that
- 03:27 we're going to discuss throughout this course.
- 03:30 We'll start by exploring different aspects of mentoring.
- 03:34 We'll discuss different types of mentoring, how to find the right mentor or
- 03:39 mentee, how to establish clear expectations within the relationship.
- 03:44 We'll dig into essential mentoring skills like active listening,
- 03:49 empathy, and providing constructive feedback.
- 03:52 We'll also address some of the challenges that may arise and
- 03:56 explore more advanced mentoring strategies like establishing a mentoring program.
- 04:03 And by the end of this course,
- 04:04 you will have a solid foundation in mentoring concepts, and you should feel
- 04:09 confident in applying these techniques to your own professional life.
- 04:14 So in the next lesson, we'll dig into different types of mentoring,
- 04:18 including mentoring within remote work settings.
- 04:22 We'll see you then.
