Quick reference
Add Text-Based Questions
Add a text-based question to the survey.
When to use
We add text-based questions when we want the recipient to be able to free-type their answer.
Instructions
Add a Text-Based Question
- Click Add New.
- Click on Text.
- Type the question.
The answer is typed into the 'Enter your answer' field. If the question is complex and requires a long answer (more than one or two lines), toggle on the Long answer slider.
If the question is mandatory and must be completed before moving onto the next question, toggle on Required.
Restrictions
We can add restrictions to text-based questions. Restrictions are best suited to numeric questions.
For example, if we had a question that asked 'How many planets are there?', we could add a restriction that prevents people from entering a value greater than 10.
- Click the three dots to open the more options menu.
- Click Restrictions.
- Select an appropriate restriction from the drop-down list.
Preview
- Click the Preview button to see what the question looks like to the recipient.
Hints & tips
- Restrictions are not relevant for all text-based questions.
- 00:04 Another popular type of question to add to a survey is a text-based question.
- 00:09 And what that means is that whoever's filling out the form,
- 00:12 gets to free type in a text-based answer.
- 00:15 They don't need to select a radio button or an option from a drop-down.
- 00:18 So let's add one into our survey.
- 00:21 So, if you take a look at the previous question, where we asked how did you hear
- 00:26 about Happy Flame, remember that we added an Other option at the end here.
- 00:30 So, what my text-based question might be is,
- 00:34 if you selected Other, how did you hear about Happy Flame?
- 00:38 So all we need to do here is click on Text and we can add in our question.
- 00:44 Once again, we can add an image if we want to, I'm not going to.
- 00:48 And all they would do here, is type out their answer in the box underneath.
- 00:51 Now what we can do is toggle on the long answer slider,
- 00:55 which will allow them to type in more than maybe what one or two lines.
- 00:59 So I'm going to do that.
- 01:00 Is this question required?
- 01:02 No, it isn't.
- 01:03 Let's click on the three dots to see what we have underneath here.
- 01:07 Now, once again, we could add a subtitle to give them a little bit more
- 01:10 clarification about this question, I'm not going to do that.
- 01:14 We can also add in restrictions on this question.
- 01:17 So what's that all about?
- 01:19 Well, I will say that for this question that we've typed in, this isn't
- 01:23 particularly relevant, because we can add different types of number restrictions.
- 01:28 So we've got Greater than, Greater than or equal to, Less than, so on and so forth.
- 01:33 So if the answer they were providing was a number,
- 01:36 we could apply some restrictions to that number.
- 01:39 For example, the number can't be greater than 20.
- 01:42 So this doesn't really apply for this question, so we're going to turn that off.
- 01:47 And then the final thing underneath here is Add branching.
- 01:50 Now this is actually a good example to start to explore what branching is.
- 01:55 We are going to go into it in more detail later on.
- 01:58 But for example, this question is only really relevant to people who selected
- 02:02 Other in the previous question.
- 02:05 So we could add in branching so that if they didn't select Other,
- 02:09 they completely skip over this question entirely.
- 02:12 Let's click away.
- 02:14 There is our text-based question.
- 02:16 Let's give our survey a preview to make sure it's still looking good.
- 02:20 If we scroll down, you can see there it is.
- 02:23 And if we jump across to mobile, that's what it looks like on a mobile device.
- 02:28 Remember, we have our back link to go back to our form and
- 02:32 we're ready to enter in our next question.
