Custom Quiz Grading
Learn how to custom grade quizzes and assign partial points to answers.
When to use
We custom grade a quiz when we want to assign different points to a question.
Instructions
In previous lessons, we have seen how to assign points to correct answers in a quiz. However, it might be that a situation arises where we want to custom grade the quiz and assign different points to a question. For example, maybe upon reflection, the question was worded in a confusing way so to make things fair, we want to give the student some points despite the fact they got the answer wrong.
- Open the 'Accounts Team Microsoft Excel Quiz' in Forms.
- Click on the Responses tab.
- Ensure you have the first responder selected.
- In the Auto-graded field next to the question, type the number of points to assign to the answer in the box.
Remember to do this for each responder to make it fair.
- Click the speech bubble next to the points to add some comments.
Notice that when we custom grade, that is reflected in the number of points each student has achieved at the top of the page.
Login to download- 00:04 One of the major differences between quizzes and surveys is that with quizzes,
- 00:09 we assign points when the student gets an answer correct.
- 00:13 But did you know you can actually perform custom grading on quizzes as well?
- 00:18 Now, what do we mean by custom grading?
- 00:21 Well, I've got the Accounts Team Microsoft Excel Quiz open.
- 00:25 Currently this only has two questions in it, but we can see that each question,
- 00:30 if you get it correct, you'll receive ten points.
- 00:33 Under the top here in the title,
- 00:35 we can see there is a total of 20 points up for grabs.
- 00:38 Now if we jump across to the Responses tab, because we have six people who have
- 00:43 responded to this quiz, and then click on Review answers,
- 00:47 we can go through each responder and see how many points they've achieved.
- 00:52 So you can see here that for respondent number 1, which is me,
- 00:56 I've achieved 0 out of 20 points.
- 00:58 And that is because I got both of the questions wrong.
- 01:02 You can see on the right-hand side, just here, 0 out of 10 points.
- 01:07 If we move to the next responder, respondent number 2,
- 01:11 you can see that that person has achieved 10 out of 20 points.
- 01:15 And that's because they got the first question wrong and
- 01:18 the second question correct.
- 01:19 So we can go through each responder seeing how many points they've actually achieved.
- 01:24 Now, once I assigned ten points to each of these questions,
- 01:28 it might be that we have a situation where I want to give them partial points.
- 01:34 So maybe they didn't get the question completely correct, but
- 01:38 maybe the question was worded slightly strangely.
- 01:41 Or maybe there was some kind of miscommunication in the question.
- 01:44 And in order to level up the playing field and
- 01:47 just make it a bit fairer, I want to assign some points to a question.
- 01:51 So let's just pretend this first question, I want to assign partial points for
- 01:55 respondent number 1.
- 01:57 What I can do is apply custom grading.
- 02:00 So over on the right-hand side here,
- 02:02 we have a little field here where it says Auto-graded.
- 02:04 And then above, we have 0, because that's the automatic amount of points that get
- 02:08 applied if they get the question wrong.
- 02:10 But I'm going to give them some points for this question.
- 02:13 So all I would need to do is come in here and modify this field.
- 02:17 Now I can either click in it and type, or I can use these little scroll arrows.
- 02:21 So let's say that this person is going to get five out of ten points.
- 02:26 So the question is still incorrect, but I've manually graded this question and
- 02:31 given them some points.
- 02:32 And you can now see just above, that has been reflected,
- 02:36 they've now achieved 5 out of 20 points.
- 02:38 Now it's worth noting that if you are doing this on a per-student basis,
- 02:42 you will need to go through all of the students and assign those points manually.
- 02:47 So it doesn't automatically adjust,
- 02:50 if I go across to the next student who also got this answer incorrect,
- 02:54 I would then need to make it fair and give them five points as well.
- 02:58 And I would need to go through and do exactly the same for
- 03:01 everybody who got the first question incorrect.
- 03:04 So let's go to this one, we're going to assign five points.
- 03:08 Next one, we also need to give them five points.
- 03:11 And the final one, they also need to get five points.
- 03:15 And if you are the person grading this quiz for somebody, in this case,
- 03:19 respondent number 6, I could click on the speech bubble just here and
- 03:22 provide them with some feedback.
- 03:25 So if we click the speech bubble,
- 03:26 notice we get this little text field open up at the bottom, and
- 03:30 I could then tell them the reason why they've been given partial points.
- 03:34 So that gives the responder a little bit of insight as to why they've achieved five
- 03:38 points for essentially an incorrect answer.
- 03:41 So that is effectively how you can custom grade your quizzes.
