Quick reference
Import a Quiz
Learn how to import a quiz into Microsoft Forms.
When to use
We use the import tool when we have form data outside of Microsoft Forms that we want to import.
Instructions
Import a Quiz from Word
If we have a quiz or a survey in Microsoft Word, we can import it into Microsoft Forms. This is useful as it means we do not need to create a new form from scratch.
- Download the file 'Microsoft Word Quiz.docx' from the exercise files folder.
- From the start page in Forms, click Quick Import.
- Click Upload from this device.
- Navigate to the folder where the Word document is saved.
- Select the document and click Open.
We can import files as a form or as a quiz.
- Click Quiz.
- Click Start review.
Check the quiz and make any necessary amendments. Form questions don't always import perfectly so make sure the correct question type has been selected.
Also, if we have imported a quiz, we will need to go through each question, mark the correct answer, and assign points (if required).
- Click the Preview button to preview the form.
Hints & tips
- It's always a good idea to read the Import guidance prior to uploading a form.
- 00:04 It's entirely possible to import quizzes from other applications into
- 00:08 Microsoft Forms.
- 00:10 For example, maybe you have a quiz stored off in a Word document.
- 00:14 Instead of retyping it manually into a form within Microsoft Forms,
- 00:19 we can simply import that quiz.
- 00:22 So let's take a look at an example.
- 00:24 So I've just created a Microsoft Word quiz that I want to give to all of
- 00:29 the admin staff at the Happy Flame Candle Company.
- 00:33 We want to make sure they know how to manage and
- 00:35 work with their documents correctly.
- 00:37 Now I've typed this up in Word and I want to convert it into a Form and
- 00:41 I've kind of got a couple of different question types in here.
- 00:45 The first one is a multiple-choice question.
- 00:48 The second one is still a multiple-choice question, but we have a blank gap, so
- 00:53 this is a fill in the blanks type of a question.
- 00:56 And then finally we have another fill the blanks type for
- 00:59 question without any choices.
- 01:01 So let's close this document down and import this quiz.
- 01:05 So we're back at the forms start page and
- 01:08 notice right at the top we have a quick Import button.
- 01:11 Now this is inviting us to import a file, and it's telling us that we can upload
- 01:16 from a device and we can select a Word document or a PDF file from our computer.
- 01:21 Now, one thing that's really useful to look at first is this import guidance.
- 01:25 Because this is going to tell you the format that the document needs to be in,
- 01:29 in order for it to import correctly into Microsoft Forms.
- 01:32 So you can see here we have a preview of an English grammar quiz.
- 01:36 We've got some recommended question types, so multiple choice,
- 01:39 open text such as fill in the blank, short answer, etc.
- 01:43 And then there's some tips for better import results,
- 01:47 there should be clear separation between questions.
- 01:51 Content should be arranged vertically, and
- 01:54 we should remove any complex equations and figures.
- 01:57 Now I think mine pretty much at ease to all of these guidelines.
- 02:01 So let's click on got it and now I'm going to choose upload from this device.
- 02:05 So there is the quiz and I've included this quiz in the course files for
- 02:10 this lesson.
- 02:11 So if you want to use this to try this out, then you going to find it in there,
- 02:14 so let's click on Open.
- 02:16 And I can choose if I want to import my file as a form or as a quiz.
- 02:21 So this is a quiz as opposed to a form, so let's choose quiz.
- 02:25 And now it's converting my Word document to a Microsoft form.
- 02:29 And I'm going to be really interested to see how good of a job it does.
- 02:33 So it says that my quiz has been converted successfully,
- 02:36 I can choose to import another or I can start review.
- 02:40 So I'm going to say start review and to check out what we have,
- 02:43 it looks pretty good so far.
- 02:44 We have add title at the top.
- 02:46 And remember, everything is editable once we're inside the Form.
- 02:51 So when I click in the header, I could add a form description if I want to.
- 02:54 I can add an image as well.
- 02:56 And if I want to insert new questions, I have an insert button here and
- 03:00 I can choose the question type that I want to insert.
- 03:03 So, let's take a look at this.
- 03:04 What is the name of the customizable toolbar that houses frequently used
- 03:07 commands?
- 03:08 And then we have our options.
- 03:10 Question two, that looks pretty good as well.
- 03:12 Now check out question three, because I didn't provide multiple choice,
- 03:17 I just left a blank, it's given me a text field so they can type the correct answer.
- 03:22 Now on the right-hand side where we have this review quiz, it's reminding me that
- 03:26 before collecting responses, remember to add correct answers and point values.
- 03:30 So let's select the correct answer from here, which is Quick Access.
- 03:34 And I'm going to assign five points to this question.
- 03:38 Let's go to the next question.
- 03:39 To change the orientation of a specific page in a document, we need to add
- 03:44 a section break is the correct answer, and this one is also going to be five points.
- 03:50 And then finally at the bottom here we can find the print command under the File Tab,
- 03:55 but notice here that there's Nowhere for me to input what the correct answer is.
- 04:02 So really this question type that's been automatically assigned isn't quite
- 04:06 right for this question.
- 04:07 So what I would probably do here is delete the question and
- 04:11 re-insert it within Forms.
- 04:12 So if you are going to import quizzes from Word,
- 04:15 you need to make sure that you go through and really check the quiz questions and
- 04:20 make adjustments where necessary.
- 04:22 So what I'm going to do here is I'm going to delete the question by clicking
- 04:26 on the trash can icon just there.
- 04:28 Let's click on Preview and take a look at it, and I think that looks pretty good.
- 04:33 So just be aware that you can also import quizzes from a Word or
- 04:38 PDF file, but just make sure that you go through and
- 04:42 check your quiz questions before you send the quiz out.
