Format Your Notes
This lesson will show you how to format the text of your notes in OneNote.
When to use
This lesson will help you make your text stand out, instead of always using the same format.
Instructions
- Highlight some text on your OneNote Page
- Click on the Home Menu
- You will see many formatting choice on the Home Menu
- If you want to change your mind, you can always use Undo, which is found on the Quick Access Toolbar on the top of the screen.
Hints & tips
- After you highlight your text, you will see some formatting icons right above the text. This is called the Mini-Toolbar.
- 00:04 Now as far as formatting your notes, I could do it a couple of different ways.
- 00:09 If I click on that text, notice how the container is shown.
- 00:15 So if I click on that container, then all the text is automatically selected.
- 00:20 You can use the home toolbar, right, so
- 00:23 you see a lot of formatting icons on your home toolbar.
- 00:27 So of course we have the font, the font size,
- 00:30 I can make that into a bullet list, a number list.
- 00:34 This one is when you have maybe a bullet list and
- 00:38 I can indent the list or decrease it.
- 00:41 We can get to that when we do the the actual list in a different video.
- 00:46 Here is where I can clear all the formatting.
- 00:49 So let's say we're going to make that text bold, and I'll make it italics and so on.
- 00:55 If I want to quickly clear the formatting, I can just click in the text box.
- 00:59 And then click on the clear formatting and then it goes back to normal, all right?
- 01:04 But you see a lot of your common formatting techniques,
- 01:07 here is underline, strikethrough.
- 01:09 Now this is called a subscript,
- 01:11 see how that 2 will be below the x, that would be for a subscript.
- 01:17 And then there's other ones there, there's subscript and superscript.
- 01:20 Superscript is maybe what you would use for a footnote, that kind of format.
- 01:23 Let's try to highlight the text.
- 01:25 So if I click on the highlighter, of course the highlighter comes up and
- 01:29 there's different colors for the highlighter.
- 01:32 Of course, you can always undo something, right here is undo.
- 01:34 And then here is going to be the justification within that container.
- 01:39 So right now the text is left justified in that container.
- 01:42 But I can click on center.
- 01:45 You can see how it's centered now, and then align right.
- 01:50 And now the word USA is in the right hand side.
- 01:51 Let's put it back to the left.
- 01:53 Good, so if I click on that container,
- 01:55 then all the text in the container is selected.
- 01:59 However, we can also highlight specific text, and
- 02:03 then when you format only that specific text will be formatted.
- 02:09 So I'll pick on bold there.
- 02:10 Notice how the name became bold, but the other parts of that container did not.
- 02:14 So if you click on the entire container, then all the text is selected.
- 02:19 However, I could just highlight certain text and
- 02:23 then format just the text I have selected.
- 02:26 Also notice when I click on the container, or if I highlight the text,
- 02:31 then we get the formatting icons here.
- 02:34 This is called the mini toolbar and
- 02:36 you'll see a lot of the same choices you would have up top on the home menu.
- 02:40 So you can either use the home menu to format, or when you highlight the text or
- 02:45 click on the container, then we get the mini toolbar.
- 02:48 And either way is a great way to format your text within your notes.
