Quick reference
Create Your First Note
This lesson will help you create your first Note in OneNote.
When to use
This lesson is excellent for those that are brand new to OneNote.
Instructions
- Start the OneNote program.
- Click on the pulldown where it says "Notebooks" on top left side of the screen.
- Click where it says Quick Notes
- If this is the first time you are using OneNote, you will see a blank page.
- If this is not the first time you are using OneNote, you may see the text and other things you have added to this page.
- Continue to text to this page by clicking anywhere and then typing.
- 00:04 Let's make our first note in OneNote.
- 00:07 So I'm going to click onto the OneNote icon.
- 00:11 Now when you first go into OneNote, you'll be in the default notebook.
- 00:15 Now, of course, you can create other notebooks, but
- 00:18 right now we're in the default notebook.
- 00:20 So I'm going to come over here and
- 00:21 click from the pull-down where it says Notebooks.
- 00:23 And if you have different ones, you can open them up there.
- 00:27 I can add a new notebook there.
- 00:29 But you should have something that's called Quick Notes.
- 00:32 And then here we are on a blank page.
- 00:35 So usually I'll give the page a title.
- 00:37 So I'll say, My First Note here as a title.
- 00:40 And notice how those shows up as a page title over here on the right hand side.
- 00:48 Now you can really click anywhere on the page and just start to type.
- 00:52 So I'll type in my name, for example.
- 00:57 And let's say I type in my city.
- 01:03 And I'm here in the USA.
- 01:08 So now notice how you see that box, well, the box is actually called a container.
- 01:14 So later on I'll show you how to merge the containers, and how to split them, and
- 01:18 those kind of things.
- 01:19 Well, you can just click anywhere else on the page, and
- 01:22 just start to type in something.
- 01:23 So let's say I take a phone call.
- 01:26 And then I'm talking to a guy named Dave.
- 01:29 And let's say I want to have Dave's phone number.
- 01:32 I'm just recording it here in OneNote.
- 01:38 And then I have that, and then that made its own separate container.
- 01:42 So I want to show easily, you can move the containers.
- 01:47 I can just move my mouse to that container and
- 01:49 get the icon that looks at the four arrows, then I can just drag it around.
- 01:54 All right, so you can see we can drag that anywhere on the page.
- 01:58 So I can just click anywhere else.
- 01:59 You could have as many containers on that page that would actually fit.
- 02:03 So it's not like Microsoft Word.
- 02:06 Microsoft Word, you pretty much have to follow the order of the page, and
- 02:10 I can't really put anything in the middle of the page like I can here.
- 02:14 But here I can just click anywhere and start to type and
- 02:18 it makes another container.
- 02:20 So let's say I'm on another phone call and I'm talking to Phil.
- 02:25 And Phil gives me his phone number.
- 02:32 All right, so
- 02:33 I could just kind of move that around to a different section by dragging it.
- 02:39 So let's say I wanted a to do list.
- 02:41 So I'll just click over here, and we'll make another container.
- 02:44 I'll type in To Do List.
- 02:49 Now, there'll be another video about how to make something specifically into
- 02:53 a bullet list or
- 02:54 a number list, but I'm just going to click on the bullet icon up here on the home menu.
- 02:59 So let's say I have to make copies,
- 03:04 Distribute copies, To the staff.
- 03:14 Ask for comments on the copies.
- 03:19 Collect comments.
- 03:28 After I collect the comments, maybe I want to analyze the information.
- 03:35 And then very quickly, I made a very quick to do list.
- 03:40 And, of course, that's just one of those containers, and
- 03:42 I could just move that around anywhere I needed to.
- 03:45 So really, you can just click anywhere on the page.
- 03:48 And then you can start to type, that would make another container.
- 03:51 I can move the containers around by dragging them around like that.
- 03:55 And then later on we'll see how to merge the containers and how to split them, and
- 03:59 these kind of things.
- 04:01 So then if you look, I can add more pages to this particular notebook.
- 04:06 You see where it says Quick Notes over here?
- 04:09 That's really a section of the notebook, so
- 04:12 later on I'll show you how to add more sections and more pages.
- 04:17 By the way, it saves automatically, so I don't have to worry about saving it.
- 04:21 Even under the File menu, there's not really a save option,
- 04:25 it saves automatically.
- 04:27 And now we just completed our first note.
