Insert a Symbol
This lesson will show you how to insert special symbols - like the copyright © and registered ® symbols - and many others into your OneNote page.
When to use
There are many symbols that are not on the keyboard that you may want to use.
Instructions
- Go into the OneNote program
- Go into the Quick Notes notebook
- Click on the new page icon on the right
- Click on the Insert Menu
- On the right side of the Insert Menu, click on the Symbol icon
- You can use one of the symbols that you see on that initial list, but to see many more, click where it says "More Symbols"
- Once you are on the next screen, you will find many more symbols when you choose different fonts
- Try the fonts called "Wing Dings", "Web Dings", and "Times New Roman"
- When you find the symbol you want to use, click on it, then click on Insert, then close the window
Hints & tips
- If you are on the "Times New Roman" font, then you will be able to pick a subset on the right side of the Symbol window.
- 00:04 Let's talk about adding a symbol into your OneNote text.
- 00:08 So I can just click anywhere and start to type.
- 00:13 I'll just type in this is a normal sentence.
- 00:16 So of course, anything on the keyboard you can just type those in, right?
- 00:20 But what if you want a special symbols like the copyright symbol or
- 00:24 the register symbol, or things like that?
- 00:26 So in this case, I pick on the Insert menu and
- 00:29 then we come over here to the right and I'll pick on symbol.
- 00:34 Now, you'll see a lot that are built right in here.
- 00:36 Here we have the desk and the plane and everything else.
- 00:41 And then notice how it says more symbols.
- 00:43 So let's click on More Symbols.
- 00:46 Okay and then you'll see a lot more.
- 00:49 So notice how we're in a font that's called Wingdings.
- 00:53 So let's click on the pulldown for the font.
- 00:56 And then if you scroll down, you'll see other fonts that are called Wingdings.
- 01:02 There's Wingdings one, two and three.
- 01:05 And then you get more pictures, right?
- 01:07 So let's try Wingdings three and you see even more beyond that,
- 01:13 and then let me share where there's even more.
- 01:16 Actually, if you just go to different fonts.
- 01:19 So if you scroll back up a little bit, there's one that's called Webdings and
- 01:24 there's even more pictures there.
- 01:26 And then if I click on this pull down, let's see if I have different ones.
- 01:32 So let's try.
- 01:35 So if I pick on, there's a font that's called map symbols.
- 01:39 Okay, so you get some different ones there.
- 01:41 Of course, there's the copyright symbol, there's registered.
- 01:47 So let's try something.
- 01:50 I'm going to click on cancel here.
- 01:52 So then I'll say this is
- 01:55 Microsoft OneNote.
- 02:03 So let's say OneNote is a copyright, probably is a copyright within Microsoft.
- 02:09 So what I'll do is I'll pick on the symbol icon of the Insert menu and
- 02:14 we'll go back into more symbols.
- 02:17 Good and then it brings you into the font is called Wingdings, but
- 02:21 let's go to a different font.
- 02:24 So for example, I'll find where I found it. It was under the map symbols and
- 02:30 then we see the copyright.
- 02:32 So I'll pick on the copyright and then pick on insert.
- 02:36 Now if I pick on close, you see the copyright symbol there, right?
- 02:41 So let's say in the text here I'll say,
- 02:46 this is a registered trademark.
- 02:55 And I want to use the registered symbol here.
- 02:58 So I'll pick on symbol again, on the Insert menu.
- 03:01 We'll go back to more symbols.
- 03:03 And now, I'm still in that font that's called map symbols.
- 03:06 And now notice how I see the registered the register symbol,
- 03:11 I'll click on Insert there.
- 03:13 And now, that is part of the OneNote.
- 03:16 See, the symbols give you many, many things you can choose from when I pick on symbols and
- 03:21 pick on more symbols.
- 03:22 You can try those fonts that are called Wingdings and Webdings, and
- 03:26 those will give you some interesting pictures there.
- 03:29 But then if you go through the list of fonts,
- 03:32 they'll actually be some interesting ones that you can use as well.
- 03:36 Let's even try like a normal font like Times New Roman.
- 03:40 And then even there, you'll see some symbols that you can use even though
- 03:44 you'll see copyright, and registered and some different ones there as well.
- 03:49 And then remember, you can scroll down and then see many other symbols.
- 03:54 Yeah, so go ahead and pick on Times New Roman.
- 03:57 When I picked the normal fine, then you get this subset over here and
- 04:00 that'll give you even more symbols.
- 04:02 So notice how we can get the Latin letters, the Latin characters.
- 04:07 If you scroll down there, you'll see even more.
- 04:09 There's Greek in there.
- 04:11 Cyrillic, different languages are in there.
- 04:13 Hebrew, Arabic, right?
- 04:16 And then if I scroll down even further,
- 04:18 we'll start to see the mathematical operators.
- 04:21 So when you pick a normal font like Times New Roman,
- 04:25 then you come over here, then you'll be able to pick the subset.
- 04:29 And then you'll have a lot more symbols to choose from.
- 04:32 So let's go back with mathematical operators and
- 04:36 then you see a lot of your math symbols in there.
- 04:39 So let's say I needed to do.
- 04:43 This one is usually used for a sum and
- 04:46 I'll pick an insert, and I'll pick on close.
- 04:51 And now, that symbol is in your note.
- 04:54 So that's how you can add symbols onto your OneNote.
