Draw Precision Shapes and Lines
This lesson will show you how to insert straight lines and shapes like rectangles, ovals, and triangles into your page in OneNote.
When to use
These shapes will be more accurate and much neater than trying to draw these things by hand.
Instructions
- Go into the OneNote program
- Go into the Quick Notes notebook
- Click on the new page icon on the right
- Click anywhere on the page
- Click on the Draw Menu
- The Shapes can be found in the middle of the Draw Menu
- Click on one one shapes
- Move your mouse somewhere on the page
- Drag your mouse to create the shape
Hints & tips
- Hold down the Shift Key on the Keyboard before you drag your mouse to make a perfect circle, square or equal-sided triangle
- 00:04 In previous lessons,
- 00:05 we talked about how to draw on your OneNote using the Draw menu.
- 00:10 Of course, you can hand draw with the pens or the highlighters and of course,
- 00:14 you can erase what you've drawn.
- 00:17 But it's kind of hard to be perfectly accurate with those.
- 00:21 So let me show you how there's some built-in shapes and
- 00:24 some lines that'll make it much neater.
- 00:26 So I'm going to pick on the Draw menu,
- 00:29 and then notice how we have the shapes over here.
- 00:32 So let's try a couple of those.
- 00:34 This is just going to be a straight line.
- 00:37 I'll pick on this icon for the line.
- 00:40 And then you move your mouse where you want that line to appear.
- 00:43 And then you're just going to drag your mouse, and then you have a nice line.
- 00:48 Now of course,
- 00:49 it's going to be in the color from which that you chose your pen over here.
- 00:53 So in this case, I can just move that line with the sizing handles.
- 01:00 I can make it bigger or smaller using the sizing handles and so on.
- 01:04 So that's a much better line than what I could have done by drawing it by hand.
- 01:09 Now this one would be a line with an arrow at the end.
- 01:13 So I'll pick on this one, and then again just draw a line.
- 01:16 And now, notice how that one has an arrow at the end,
- 01:20 doesn't have two arrows, right, on either end as you can see, all right?
- 01:25 Then this one is going to be where you can actually make an angle.
- 01:30 So I'm just going to draw it over here and then just go down, okay?
- 01:35 So I was able to make a pretty good corner there.
- 01:38 This one is the same kind of thing, except it would have a single arrow.
- 01:44 Now, this one is going to be an angle with a double arrow.
- 01:49 So I'll click on that one, and then very quickly make that as you can see.
- 01:54 Then we have the different shapes.
- 01:56 So I have a rectangle, and then I'll just draw a rectangle on my OneNote.
- 02:02 And then we have the oval, no problem with that.
- 02:07 Now, let's say I want a perfect circle.
- 02:10 I'm going to click in the oval.
- 02:12 Now before I drag it, I hold down my Shift key, and
- 02:15 then it actually makes it into a perfect circle.
- 02:19 Whereas this one, it was not, but when you hold down your Shift key with the shapes,
- 02:23 then it'll make it like here.
- 02:24 Let's try a perfect square.
- 02:26 I'll click on the rectangle, and then come over here and just draw the rectangle.
- 02:31 I was able to hold down my Shift key and
- 02:33 you can see it comes up as a perfect square.
- 02:36 So then you have this one, a parallelogram, same kind of thing.
- 02:40 We have the triangle.
- 02:42 So I'll pick in the triangle, and I can draw a triangle by hand, right?
- 02:49 But if I want that to be a perfect triangle,
- 02:51 then I'll pick on the triangle again.
- 02:54 I'm going to hold down my Shift key, then when I drag it,
- 02:57 it really becomes a perfect triangle, all right?
- 03:00 So then we have a diamond, same kind of thing there.
- 03:03 Now in this case, this is called two dimensions.
- 03:07 So let's see what that one looks like.
- 03:08 Let me go ahead and make a new page.
- 03:10 So I'm going to add a page, and then we'll call this one More Shapes.
- 03:20 So I'll pick on this one.
- 03:24 And then let's draw that and see what that looks like.
- 03:27 So then you see how that's going to be another one with the angle.
- 03:32 Let's try this one.
- 03:35 And then this one is more of a, they're actually calling these graphs.
- 03:41 So you can see how you'll be able to make a graph from there.
- 03:44 And then this one is more of a three-dimensional graph as we can see,
- 03:48 all right?
- 03:49 So now with any of the shapes, you can pick on the arrow over here to
- 03:54 select them and then want to click on that shape.
- 03:58 Then from here, I can always resize it or move it, of course.
- 04:02 And then if I right click on that shape, I can rotate it.
- 04:05 So you have those same kind of features that we had with a picture as far as that
- 04:09 rotation.
- 04:10 Make sure you know that about any of the shapes.
- 04:14 And that's how we can add our shapes and
- 04:19 the lines into our OneNote.
