Quick reference
Second Window
Using a second window allows you to view screens side-by-side rather than shuffling layered windows.
When to use
Anytime you need to reference information (like emails) in order to make decisions (like calendar time), it is a good idea to view the two windows side-by-side.
Instructions
Float your mouse over the top of the Calendar icon on the Peek Pane located at the bottom of the Navigation pane.
- Right click the Calendar icon.
- Click the option Open in New Window.
If you have a second monitor, simply slide the calendar screen onto the second monitor and now happily view your email beside your calendar with no shuffle effect happening.
If you have a single monitor, you will have the option to either resize both windows manually (Windows 7) or snap each window to the right or left sides (Windows 8 and 10.) You can either drag the window to the side of the screen until it snaps into place or use the shortcut Windows Key+arrow right or left to do this.
To reset to one window, close the 2nd window with the X in the upper right hand corner.
Login to download- 00:04 I'll show you one of the best kept secrets in Outlook.
- 00:07 I know there's so many best kept secrets, but this is great.
- 00:10 It'll save your sanity and it's how to open two windows at the same time
- 00:14 in Outlook, so you can just glance back and forth from the email to your calendar.
- 00:18 It's wonderful, it has everything to do with the calendar icon on the bottom left
- 00:22 of my screen, over in the navigation pane.
- 00:24 Now, if I receive an email someone wants to schedule me,
- 00:27 I need to check my calendar so I click, my calendar switches.
- 00:30 And I check out my calendar, and now I have to go read the email again, so
- 00:34 I click my email.
- 00:35 As you can see, my screen is shuffling back and forth.
- 00:37 Well, that's what's going to make you crazy, so let's fix that.
- 00:40 Instead, we need to ask the question, how do I?
- 00:43 How do I open a second window?
- 00:45 Well, where is the question?
- 00:47 On the calendar, I want that in a second window.
- 00:49 So I'm going to right-click on the calendar, right-click, and
- 00:52 I'm going to read the list.
- 00:53 The top option says Open in New Window.
- 00:56 See the important thing here is your right now it will pretty much give you every
- 00:59 answer you're looking for.
- 01:00 You just have to remember to click it and then I'm begging you, read the list.
- 01:03 All right, so Open a New Window, click, there we go.
- 01:07 I have a calendar on my screen.
- 01:08 Now, I always work with two monitors when possible unless I'm travelling.
- 01:12 But otherwise, I've got two monitors.
- 01:13 So I can just take this screen and just push it right over to my second monitor,
- 01:17 but then you're not going to see the effect, right?
- 01:19 So I'm going to bring this back and leave it here just for a moment.
- 01:23 But I always have my calendar on one my inbox on the other.
- 01:28 Okay, how do we do this if we don't have a second monitor,
- 01:31 you just have one big monitor?
- 01:32 Well, we're going to invoke the power of Windows 10 and Windows 8,
- 01:35 we're actually going to push this over to the right hand side of the screen.
- 01:38 So on the title bar again, I'm going to click and drag it,
- 01:40 there's two ways to do this.
- 01:42 I'm going to show you both ways, but first, click and
- 01:44 drag over to the right hand side very slowly.
- 01:46 You'll going to see an image, just a real subtle, there it is,
- 01:49 a real subtle image outlining the second side of my screen.
- 01:53 I'm going to let go and now we could have another left hand side and
- 01:56 I can choose whatever I want to take over the left hand side of my screen.
- 02:00 And there you have it, there's my inbox, it's going to let me see this.
- 02:05 Okay, so there's my inbox and my calendar side by side.
- 02:08 If I want to read that particular email, I click on that email,
- 02:12 it opens the email and I can read this side by side.
- 02:14 This is wonderful.
- 02:15 But I told you there's a second way to do the same thing.
- 02:18 So I'm going to close my calendar, I'm going to maximize my inbox,
- 02:22 let's do this again.
- 02:24 First of all, how do I open up a new window?
- 02:26 Right-click, Open in New Window, very good.
- 02:30 And now, instead of doing the click-and-drag on the title bar,
- 02:33 I'm going to use a Windows Logo case and
- 02:35 I've actually got that pointed out right here at the very bottom.
- 02:38 Press the window logo, it looks like a little fan a little Windows logo.
- 02:41 It's usually on the left side of your keyboard next to the Ctrl and Alt keys,
- 02:45 and then the right cursor on your keyboard.
- 02:48 Okay, here we go.
- 02:49 So I'm holding down the Windows logo, tapping my right cursor,
- 02:52 it slams over to the right hand side.
- 02:54 I can choose whatever I want on the left hand side, and we are done.
- 02:58 There you go, I've got two windows open side by side, keeping my sanity.
- 03:03 This is a wonderful trick, you need to know this, you need to practice this.
- 03:07 And please go to the reference guide for these instructions, and
- 03:11 happily use Outlook the way it was made to be used.
- 03:15 All right, thank you.
