Quick reference
Pictures - Adjust, Swap
Adjust picture brightness, color, reset to original, or compress picture file size.
When to use
Use the Adjust tools to make basic level changes to a picture without using expensive photo-altering software.
Instructions:
- Begin by opening the corresponding Exercise File with this lesson, or to go File, New and find the Newsletter (Soft Blue design).
- When a picture is selected, you will see handles around the frame and a Picture Tools ribbon: Notice the Adjust section of the Picture tools.
- Picture Corrections will adjust brightness and contrast. Brightness makes the picture lighter or darker and Contrast lessens the difference between shadows and highlights, which washes out a picture.
- Choose from the options or click Picture Correction Options and set the levels manually.
- Picture Recolour applies effects such as grayscale, sepia, or washed out. Many years ago, washed out effects were known as water marks.
- Compress: Condenses picture “file size”, but not physical size on page.
- Change: Change or remove a picture while keeping the placeholder intact.
- Reset: Removes all formatting and sizing changes made to the picture.
- Swap the selected pictures and they will change locations on the page.
Now practice using each of the options pictured above on the Adjust tools list.
Computer Tips
- Ctrl + scroll to zoom in is faster than pointing to the bottom right zoom controls. Zoom in or out quickly by holding down Ctrl and scroll with your mouse wheel.
- To un-do anything, simply press Ctrl + Z, or click the un-do button on the Quick Access bar:
- Ctrl + A to select all pictures, text, and other elements on a publication.
- Click and drag a lasso around the pictures to select them all.
- Ctrl + click each picture to select multiple pics to align simultaneously.
- 00:05 Continuing on with the magic of the picture tool bar.
- 00:08 First of all I need the newsletter on my screen because it
- 00:11 already has some great pictures in it.
- 00:13 So I'm going to go search for that.
- 00:14 A newsletter, soft blue design.
- 00:16 We did upload this in the course files.
- 00:18 If you'd like to download that and use it, or just click File,
- 00:21 New and find it on your own in the Publisher program.
- 00:24 On the left-hand side is my Page Navigation pane,
- 00:27 which is under the View Pages navigation.
- 00:29 I'm going to click on the pages 2 and 3, so
- 00:32 that I do have two pictures side-by-side.
- 00:35 Now, I do need to Picture toolbar up and running.
- 00:37 So that means click on a picture in order to see your Picture Tools and your Format.
- 00:42 Over here on the Picture Tools Format on the left hand side
- 00:46 is a section called Adjust.
- 00:47 Now you're going to see some stuff happen, so
- 00:49 I'm going to zoom into this particular picture so we can see.
- 00:53 I'm basically going to destroy this picture, okay?
- 00:55 So on the corrections button, sometimes a picture might be too dark and
- 00:59 you want to lighten it up.
- 01:01 So you could click any of these.
- 01:03 I should be able just to float around and see the options without having to click,
- 01:07 but for some reason it's not really giving me that hover ability.
- 01:11 But maybe on your computer it will.
- 01:12 For some reason it's not on mine.
- 01:14 It doesn't matter.
- 01:15 If I don't like what I've done, I can just reset the thing.
- 01:18 because there's this wonderful button right here called Reset Picture.
- 01:22 Click and I can just reset it.
- 01:23 Now it also, by the way, resized it.
- 01:26 Look how big that picture that was originally.
- 01:28 So that tells me whoever had originally used this picture had sized it down.
- 01:33 I'll just go ahead and Ctrl Z to bring it back, and I am not so
- 01:37 worried about the corrections at this point.
- 01:40 Now Picture Correction Options, that might be a good thing to click on.
- 01:45 So I’m going to click this, and this take us into a lot of detail.
- 01:48 So I’m just going to hit the Reset Color.
- 01:50 Now Reset All is going to reset the size and everything,
- 01:53 I’m just going to reset color back to its original, hit OK, and it sort of adjusted.
- 01:59 It didn't adjust a lot.
- 02:00 How about I'd like to recolor the picture?
- 02:02 So I'll click on Recolor.
- 02:03 Maybe I'd like a nice sepia tone.
- 02:05 Maybe I'd like a nice Black and white tone.
- 02:08 Maybe I'd like this to be maroon.
- 02:10 Maybe I've got a maroon thing going on, I could change it to maroon.
- 02:13 Your Recolor is kind of great.
- 02:16 I'm going to go back to the original.
- 02:18 I'm going to show you this one,
- 02:19 a little known detail in here is the Set Transparent Color.
- 02:22 Maybe I don't want that black jacket.
- 02:24 On the color, I can actually make that black go away.
- 02:27 When you hit the set transparent color, I can click that and
- 02:30 it is this little eye dropper.
- 02:32 I'm literally going to click on the black, click, and there,
- 02:35 it took away everything that was black.
- 02:37 Of course it looks terrible, I don't want that to happen, but many times, maybe you
- 02:41 want just a certain color to varnish, so you go to Recolor, Set Transparent Color,
- 02:45 get that little eyedropper and click and that particular color will vanish.
- 02:49 Kind of a nice little feature if you want to know about it.
- 02:52 Let's keep going.
- 02:53 Notice right up here we have a button that says Compress Pictures.
- 02:56 This doesn't make it smaller on my screen but it does make the file size of
- 02:59 the picture smaller, kind of great if it's emailed or sent up to the internet.
- 03:03 Notice it says current combined image size is 413.
- 03:06 After compression, it will be 381 kilobytes,
- 03:09 not a big deal unless that said megabytes then it would be a big deal.
- 03:13 I'm not going to compress it but I just want you to know you have that option.
- 03:17 Okay, the next one is the Change Picture.
- 03:19 If I want to change this picture, I could hit the change and it's going to open
- 03:23 right to my files and I can go change and get a different picture on the screen.
- 03:29 Look at that.
- 03:30 It took my original one, set it off to my and
- 03:33 replaced it with this big one right here.
- 03:35 All right, what if I want to remove the picture entirely.
- 03:38 kind of great, it'll remove it but leave the placeholders.
- 03:41 I do want those to stay there.
- 03:42 The next one I want to show you is the swap pictures.
- 03:45 This is a great feature.
- 03:47 I want to really zoom down a little bit so
- 03:50 you can see that this happened at the same time.
- 03:53 I'm going to click on one picture, go back to my Picture Tools Format.
- 03:56 Notice this swap is grayed out.
- 03:58 It's not available until you click on two pictures.
- 04:00 You got to swap with something, right?
- 04:02 So I'm going to Ctrl click on this second picture and all of a sudden swap lit up.
- 04:07 Notice there is a drop down arrow so I could swap pictures or
- 04:09 swap formatting the pictures.
- 04:11 I'm going to go ahead and click swap.
- 04:12 Now keep your eyes on the pictures.
- 04:14 Click, click, click, do you see what's happening?
- 04:18 It's allowing me to make a decision of which one I like better on which side.
- 04:22 I love having options and the swap button gives you those options, great features,
- 04:27 but again, you need to practice.
- 04:30 So I'm going to set you loose, go ahead and practice those for a while.
- 04:33 It's great fun, actually.
