Quick reference
Pictures - Adjust, Swap
Adjust picture brightness, color, reset to original, or compress picture file size.
When to use
Use the Adjust tools to make basic level changes to a picture without using expensive photo-altering software.
Instructions:
- Begin by opening the corresponding Exercise File with this lesson, or to go File, New and find the “Business Newsletter” called Trader News.
- When a picture is selected, you will see handles around the frame and a Picture Tools ribbon:
Notice the ADJUST section of the ribbon tools:
Picture Corrections will adjust Brightness and Contrast. Brightness makes the picture lighter or darker and Contrast lessens the difference between shadows and highlights, which washes out a picture.
Choose from the options or click “Picture Correction Options” and set the levels manually.Picture recolor applies effects such as grayscale, sepia, or washed out. (Many years ago, washed out effects were known as “water marks”.)
-
SWAP the selected pictures and they will change locations on the page.
- Now practice using each of the options pictured above on the Adjust tools list.
Computer Tips:
- “Ctrl + Scroll” to zoom in is faster than pointing to the bottom right zoom controls. Zoom in or out quickly by holding down CTRL and scroll with your mouse wheel.
- To un-do anything, simply press “Ctrl + Z”, or click the un-do button on the Quick Access bar:
- “Ctrl + A” to select all pictures, text, and other elements on a publication.
- Click and Drag a lasso around the pictures to select them all
- “Ctrl Click” each picture to select multiple pics to align simultaneously
- 00:04 We're going to work more on the Pictures Toolbar.
- 00:06 Let's go ahead and use the File > New Trader News business newsletter.
- 00:11 Double-click that.
- 00:13 That file also accompanies this video lesson.
- 00:16 And on the left hand side, the page navigation.
- 00:20 Click the page two and three, the center ones.
- 00:22 So, we have a lot of pictures and text boxes on our screen.
- 00:26 If you don't see the Page Navigation panel, click your View ribbon,
- 00:29 activate Page Pavigation.
- 00:31 While you're there, go ahead and click on Boundaries.
- 00:33 So, we see an outline of your text boxes and your pictures.
- 00:36 I'm gonna Ctrl+scroll in, that's a zoom control.
- 00:40 I could use the zoom control down in the right-hand corner, as well.
- 00:43 And now when I click on this top picture, my Picture Tools ribbon shows up.
- 00:48 And way over here on the left, we have one that says corrections.
- 00:50 Let's go ahead and observe what happens.
- 00:52 If you have a photo that was taken in a dark room,
- 00:55 you can actually repair it just enough to make it work for your project,
- 00:58 just by using the corrections the brightness button.
- 01:01 The next one is Recolor.
- 01:03 I can go to black and white, I can go to sepia, I can go to blue tones.
- 01:07 What if your project, you're using maroons.
- 01:09 Go down to More Variations and go ahead and
- 01:12 choose maroon tones, whatever tones you want.
- 01:15 Up there next to that is a Compress Picture.
- 01:19 The Compress Picture won't affect the picture size on your screen.
- 01:25 It will affect the file size of that photo.
- 01:29 If you're uploading this project to the web or sending it via email,
- 01:33 you want the file size to be travel-worthy.
- 01:35 So sometimes you have to compress your pictures to a smaller size,
- 01:39 that will not affect the invisible size on the project.
- 01:42 The next option we have is Change or Remove Picture.
- 01:44 When I clicked Change Picture, it takes me to my Browse options into my file system.
- 01:51 I'll go ahead and close that.
- 01:52 The cool thing here is the remove.
- 01:54 When I hit Remove Picture, it leaves a picture frame behind perfectly sized.
- 01:58 So maybe I'm not ready for the next picture, but
- 02:00 I'd wanna remove the one that's there.
- 02:02 I'm gonna bring that picture back right away by using Ctrl+Z,
- 02:06 which will undo whatever you just did inside any project.
- 02:09 The bottom option here, this is Reset Picture.
- 02:11 When I click it on this picture, nothing happens, but
- 02:14 observe what happens when I click on this staff picture right down here.
- 02:18 And now I hit Reset, the picture gets actually quiet large.
- 02:22 That’s simply tells me that it was a large picture to begin with and
- 02:25 whoever made this news letter, size it down.
- 02:28 So you discover those little secrets just by hearing the reset that.
- 02:32 Again, I want that to go back to the way it was, so
- 02:34 I’m gonna undo that with Ctrl+Z.
- 02:37 The next thing I wanna show you is the swap.
- 02:40 Right up here, it's grayed out.
- 02:43 But when I have my staff picture selected, I can tell cuz there's handles on it.
- 02:47 And now I'm going to Ctrl+click on this picture.
- 02:51 Both pictures have handles now and look what happened to my Swap button it lit up,
- 02:55 so it's available.
- 02:56 Now, I'll go ahead and click Swap.
- 02:58 And there, they switched places.
- 03:00 I didn't have to work on re-sizing.
- 03:02 I didn't have to work on moving anything.
- 03:03 It saved me a lot of work, just by hitting that Swap button.
- 03:07 If I want it back, I could hit Ctrl+Z and put it back or just hit Swap again and
- 03:11 it goes right back.
- 03:13 Another thing to notice is the drop-down arrow underneath Swap,
- 03:16 here you have Swap pictures or Swap Formatting Only.
- 03:20 So maybe there is picture frames around these,
- 03:22 you could actually reformat each of them and swap that formatting.
- 03:26 In the next video, we're gonna go through styles and picture frames.
- 03:29 So, stay with me.
- 03:31 Thank you.
