Quick reference
Pictures - Styles, Frames, Captions
Change the picture style, shape and frame (border), also add captions.
When to use
Picture shapes and frames are called Effects and can add interest or draw attention to a theme. Captions simply identify pictures with an attached text box.
Instructions
- Begin by clicking on any picture in a Publisher file, or open File, New and find “Newsletter (Soft Blue design)”.
- Picture Styles will change the shape of the picture and frame style. A gallery of preformatted styles is available, with an option to Clear Picture Style at the bottom.
- Effects: Applies shadow, glow, or 3-D rotation.
- Caption: Applies a caption to the picture.
- Border: Customize the color around the picture.
- Styles can be created manually by using the additional tools beside the style gallery.
- Captions are valuable when you are creating a publication and identifying the image is necessary.
- Practice using each of the options pictured above.
Computer Tips
-
Ctrl + scroll to zoom in is faster than pointing to the bottom right zoom controls. Zoom in or out quickly by holding down Ctrl and scroll with your mouse wheel.
-
To un-do anything, simply press Ctrl + Z, or click the un-do button on the Quick Access bar:
- Ctrl + A to select all pictures, text, and other elements on a publication.
- Click and drag a lasso around the pictures to select them all.
- Ctrl + click each picture to select multiple pics to align simultaneously.
- 00:04 All right, continuing on with our previous lesson,
- 00:06 we're going to stay with the same newsletter.
- 00:09 You can download it with the course files or go ahead and
- 00:12 just open up any newsletter.
- 00:13 I've clicked on one single picture on the front page of this newsletter.
- 00:16 So my Picture Tools Format has come up, and we're going to look at picture styles.
- 00:21 And right here we have picture borders and picture effects and of course captions.
- 00:27 All right, picture styles basically will change this photo.
- 00:31 I can choose any one of these styles and apply it.
- 00:34 I don't necessarily like them all,
- 00:36 keep in mind it's simply a graphics designer created these.
- 00:39 Just because Microsoft made it doesn't mean you have to use it, but
- 00:43 there might be an occasion where these absolutely help you out.
- 00:46 I actually don't want a picture style, so I'm going to go ahead and
- 00:48 clear picture style at the very bottom, and go back to my normal picture.
- 00:53 All right, maybe I'd like to create my own.
- 00:56 In this case I'm going to go ahead and click on the picture border button, and
- 00:59 I can choose a nice maroon border.
- 01:01 It looks pretty thick, but I can also change that thickness.
- 01:05 Thickness is called weight, so if you'd like to change the weight of the border
- 01:09 you simply go right into here, look for weight.
- 01:12 Maybe I would like a dashed border.
- 01:14 Now the dashes are as big as the weight you chose, all right.
- 01:18 So I'm going to choose a bigger weight so you can see the dashed border.
- 01:22 And this is how you go ahead and create your own.
- 01:24 Not saying that you need to or want to, but
- 01:27 you need to know they have the ability too.
- 01:29 Now notice the colors right here, the recent colors,
- 01:32 these are the colors that are embedded in this particular newsletter.
- 01:35 So maybe I'd like the border to match the newsletter theme, so
- 01:39 I could choose that color, whatever that gray was.
- 01:42 I could also choose no outline.
- 01:44 I can create a pattern for the outline, any of these cool patterns right here.
- 01:48 All right, let's go ahead and move on.
- 01:50 The next one is the Picture Effects, now Shadows.
- 01:54 Shadows on pictures, when you add a shadow to a picture it makes it look.
- 01:58 I think I want to get rid of that border here.
- 02:00 Let me go ahead and clear picture style, and
- 02:04 I'm going to put a shadow on this particular picture.
- 02:07 Now a shadow will make the picture look like it's been lifted up a little bit,
- 02:12 okay, from the paper.
- 02:13 I could, and here we have a reflection.
- 02:16 And we can see the reflection.
- 02:17 Actually I can't see these at all.
- 02:18 Let me move this over here so I can see a little better.
- 02:21 There you can see the reflection of this picture.
- 02:23 And there's just all kinds of, you can make the edges glow on the picture,
- 02:28 whatever you want to do, you can make it do.
- 02:31 Just keep in mind, there is a professionalism aspect to this, all right.
- 02:36 So don't go too crazy with all of this, but it is kind of fun.
- 02:40 It all depends on your project and what you're doing.
- 02:42 At any point if you want to reset the picture, you simply go to Tools,
- 02:47 Format, and we have a reset picture right here,
- 02:51 which will clear it all off including the size.
- 02:54 So I'm now going to just make that size a little more manageable.
- 02:59 All right, I'm back to my basic picture.
- 03:01 All right, let's do one more.
- 03:02 I'm going to put a caption on this picture.
- 03:04 So how about I zoom in so we can see the caption?
- 03:07 When you click on the drop down arrow, of course no caption is set,
- 03:11 but I can have a caption underneath, on top, to the left, to the right,
- 03:15 I can have it filled with color if I want, or little text boxes within it.
- 03:19 Now why would I choose a caption instead of just putting a text box on it?
- 03:24 because the caption will actually attach itself to the picture and
- 03:28 travel with the picture.
- 03:32 All right, and so now when I move this, I've got one item moving around,
- 03:37 not two separate items to deal with.
- 03:39 So it's kind of a nice feature.
- 03:41 I like the captions a lot.
- 03:43 So anyway, I just wanted to show you that,
- 03:45 it is great when you're in the picture format to work in the picture styles.
- 03:49 But keep in mind,
- 03:50 just because Microsoft designed it doesn't mean you have to use it.
- 03:53 Keep it professional when you can.
