Quick reference
Pictures - Styles, Frames, Captions
Change the picture style, shape and frame (border), also add captions.
When to use
Picture shapes and frames are called “Effects” and can be applied to add interest or draw attention to a theme. Captions simply identify pictures with an attached text box.
Instructions:
- Begin by opening the corresponding Exercise File with this lesson, or to go File, New and find the “Business Newsletter” called Trader News.
Picture Styles will change the shape of the picture and frame style. A gallery of preformatted styles is available, with an option to Clear Picture Style at the bottom.
- Styles can be created manually by using the additional tools beside the style gallery.
- Captions are valuable when you are creating a publication and identying the picture participants or image is necessary.
- Practice using each of the options pictured above on the Adjust tools list.
Computer Tips:
- “Ctrl + Scroll” to zoom in is faster than pointing to the bottom right zoom controls. Zoom in or out quickly by holding down CTRL and scroll with your mouse wheel.
- To un-do anything, simply press “Ctrl + Z”, or click the un-do button on the Quick Access bar:
- “Ctrl + A” to select all pictures, text, and other elements on a publication.
- Click and Drag a lasso around the pictures to select them all
- “Ctrl Click” each picture to select multiple pics to align simultaneously
- 00:04 All right, we're gonna go ahead and start this lesson about picture styles,
- 00:08 picture frames, and captions by using the File > New > Trader News newsletter.
- 00:11 Double-click that, it opens up on your screen.
- 00:14 We're gonna go ahead and stay on page one.
- 00:16 Activate that bottom picture, and I'm gonna control wheel up to kind of zoom
- 00:20 into that picture, so we can see the changes right away.
- 00:23 Now, I'm scrolling over to the right side of my screen.
- 00:25 Because when I click on Picture Tools > Format,
- 00:28 the tools I wanna use are right here, and when I hit those drop down areas,
- 00:31 they would lay over my picture, but I want you to see them.
- 00:34 Now these are pre-formatted picture frames, it's just some graphics designer
- 00:38 at Microsoft thought these were cool and made them part of the list.
- 00:41 You can design your own with the tools sitting right next to it.
- 00:45 Here I have, let's see, picture effects, so here I have shadow effects.
- 00:49 Shadows are kind of great because they add depth to a picture.
- 00:53 So I could choose this one and notice,
- 00:55 look in the background when I click off of it.
- 00:57 When I zoom in a little bit, it actually looks like a picture is being held up
- 01:01 over the paper cuz you can see the shadow in the background.
- 01:04 If I Ctrl+Z and undo that, the shadow is gone.
- 01:08 Now most pictures when you work with them, think of
- 01:11 when you're looking at a magazine, are magazine photos, do they have shadows?
- 01:16 Do they have frames on them?
- 01:18 Mostly, the answer is no, but occasionally yes if it adds depth to the picture.
- 01:23 So I'm not here to teach you how to be a graphics designer,
- 01:25 but I am here to show you your tools if you want to get creative with a photo.
- 01:30 So this is basically a glow, so I've got a low glow effect in the background.
- 01:35 I'm pressing Ctrl+Z to undo these after I'm finished with them.
- 01:38 The Soft Edges is kinda cool because you can make, basically,
- 01:43 it just looks like this nice little cloudy edge of a photo,
- 01:47 just kind of like you took an eraser and erased some of it.
- 01:50 It's a nice effect.
- 01:52 And let's see, go back there to my effects.
- 01:55 And then of course, we have the bevel or
- 01:57 the 3D rotation, which will switch a picture around.
- 02:01 Let's see, let me Ctrl-zoom down so we can see what happened.
- 02:05 So basically, I tilted it a little bit on this one.
- 02:09 It's fun to experiment with this.
- 02:11 But I'll always draw you back to theme of when is the last time
- 02:15 in a magazine you saw something really crazy, a reflection going on?
- 02:19 Keep that in mind as you use these picture tools.
- 02:23 Because if it's nothing you would see normally,
- 02:25 you might not wanna use it here, so.
- 02:27 All right, let's go with picture frame.
- 02:30 So I'm still on that picture, right over here, I have picture frames.
- 02:35 Well line colors basically is what they're called, and so
- 02:38 I'm gonna go ahead and choose a dark line color.
- 02:41 And you can barely see it on my screen because it's not very thick.
- 02:45 Now thickness is called weight, so I'll go ahead and
- 02:48 put a really thick border on this particular frame.
- 02:52 Now that that's there, maybe I wanna change this to a polka dot border or
- 02:56 a square border or a dashed border,
- 02:59 it all depends on how thick you apply the frame to what effect you get here.
- 03:03 Again, you need to stay professional if at all possible,
- 03:06 the pattern's kind of a cool option as well.
- 03:08 When you click Pattern, I could put stripes or polka dots on this.
- 03:11 When I click OK, there you go, you've got the stripe pattern on here.
- 03:15 Of course, I'm probably not going to do that, but just so you know,
- 03:18 you have those options.
- 03:19 The next thing I wanna talk to you about is the caption.
- 03:21 If you notice right underneath, it says photo caption, but
- 03:24 when I click on that box, it has its own frame.
- 03:27 If this was a true picture caption attached to the photo,
- 03:32 it wouldn't have a separate frame.
- 03:33 And I can actually click and drag that away.
- 03:35 That is simply a text box that they placed underneath that particular picture, so
- 03:39 let's go ahead and give it a true caption.
- 03:41 I'm going to click on the picture, gonna go to my Format ribbon, and
- 03:45 right over here, this option says Caption.
- 03:48 When you hit the drop down arrow, you can decide caption under, above, to the left.
- 03:52 You can choose if you want a filled in caption, any of these things,
- 03:56 like a colored caption.
- 03:58 Now I went ahead and chose that particular one, and
- 04:01 notice, I have handles around the picture and the caption.
- 04:04 Take a look at what happened up on the ribbons.
- 04:06 I have my Picture Tools ribbon, Text Box ribbon, and a Drawing Tools Format ribbon.
- 04:11 That's because the text box always is a square, and it is a shape.
- 04:16 So you get your drawing tools, and then you get your text options, and
- 04:20 then of course, your picture options.
- 04:21 So right now, I've got three new ribbons just because I applied picture captions.
- 04:26 Excellent tip to know, so I'll leave you with that.
- 04:29 Go ahead and practice with your styles, practice with your captions, and
- 04:32 have fun with this.
- 04:33 It's kind of one of the fun parts of using Publisher.
- 04:37 Thank you.
