Quick reference
Join a Meeting or Call
Understand how to join a meeting or call.
When to use
We join a meeting or call when we have received an invite from another meeting participant or received a call.
Instructions
We receive requests to join a meeting in a couple of different ways. If we are being invited by someone within our organization we will receive a pop-up notification, if we are being invited by someone outside our organization, we will receive an email with a meeting link.
Join a meeting
When someone requests us to join a meeting, we will receive a pop-up in the bottom right-hand corner and we need to choose Accept or Decline. If we decline the join request is canceled, if we accept we join the meeting.
Once we've chosen our meeting options and if we want our camera off or on, we can click Join now.
If the meeting organizer has all microphones muted when we join, we can use the Chat pane to have conversations with others.
To leave the meeting, click Leave.
Hints & tips
- Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+M to unmute the mic or press and hold Ctrl+Spacebar to temporarily unmute.
- 00:04 In the previous lesson, we saw how we can start a meeting and
- 00:08 invite other people to join that meeting.
- 00:11 But what happens the other way around?
- 00:13 What happens when somebody requests you to join a meeting?
- 00:17 Well, let's take a look at it.
- 00:19 Olivia has started a meeting and she's inviting me.
- 00:24 Notice that I get a pop up in the bottom right hand corner, and
- 00:27 you can control what this pop up looks like through your notification settings.
- 00:32 Again, we will look at that later on.
- 00:34 So I'm going to click on accept, and
- 00:36 that's going to jump me straightaway into that meeting.
- 00:40 The only thing I need to do here is decide if I want to turn my camera off or
- 00:45 on, and make sure that my microphone is set up correctly.
- 00:49 So all I need to do here is click on Join Now, and
- 00:53 I'm now in that meeting with Olivia.
- 00:56 If we click on the show participants pane,
- 00:59 you can see here that this time Olivia is the organizer.
- 01:03 I can put myself on mute if I want to by clicking on the microphone
- 01:08 button at the top.
- 01:09 So let's do that, so I don't stop her.
- 01:13 And notice the little tip we're getting there, press and
- 01:17 hold down Ctrl+Spacebar to temporarily unmute yourself.
- 01:20 So that's another really useful keyboard shortcut.
- 01:23 Now because I am on mute, if I want to interact with Olivia,
- 01:28 I can still speak to her via the chat panel.
- 01:31 So if we click on show conversation, I can chat with her from here.
- 01:36 So all you need to do is type a message into the box.
- 01:40 And notice underneath where we've typed our message we have those very
- 01:44 similar icons to what we have when we're chatting in a channel.
- 01:48 So I can do things from here like send gifts, stickers,
- 01:52 I can attach files, so on and so forth.
- 01:54 So a really nice simple way to chat with participants whilst you're in a meeting.
- 02:00 Now when the meeting is finished, I can click on the leave button up here.
- 02:04 Olivia as the meeting owner also has the option to end the meeting for
- 02:10 all participants.
- 02:12 So I'm simply going to click on leave,
- 02:15 the meeting is still in progress, I'm just no longer part of it.
