Navigating the Page
Learn how to control where you type and how to navigate within the page.
When to use
This is useful every time you are in MS Word. Knowing where your insertion point is and where it should be is vital to getting a document finished in a timely manner.
Instructions
- Double click anywhere on the page and observe the insertion point placement.
- Use the Enter key to move the insertion point down.
- Use the Tab key to move the insertion point to the right.
- Use the Backspace key to move the insertion point to the left or up a line.
- Observe the alignment buttons in the Paragraph group to keep track of how your typing is aligned on the page.
- 00:04 Hello, in this lesson I want to talk to you about navigating through the document,
- 00:08 and it's basically with the insertion point.
- 00:11 If you'll take a look right over here on the word Hello,
- 00:13 right at the very end I have a flashing line.
- 00:16 That flashing line is called your insertion point.
- 00:19 Your insertion point is your lifeline.
- 00:20 Wherever that is, is where you are about to type.
- 00:23 Whether you like it or not, that is a reality.
- 00:26 Now floating right next to it moving around is a little capital letter I,
- 00:30 that is your cursor placement tool.
- 00:33 It's basically called the I-beam,
- 00:35 because it is shaped like the capital letter I of the English language.
- 00:39 So I have an insertion point flashing beside the word Hello, so
- 00:43 I'm just gonna type Student.
- 00:45 And now to move my insertion point down a line,
- 00:48 I'm going to hit the Enter key on my keyboard, and there it is.
- 00:51 Now I can type a sentence, and
- 00:53 the insertion point is at the end of the sentence.
- 00:57 I'll hit my space bar and type another sentence, basically the same one.
- 01:01 Now I want to move down so I'll hit my Enter key.
- 01:03 And so, as you can see, that's how it works.
- 01:06 Now if I hit my Tab key on my keyboard, it says Tab, you can tab over once and
- 01:11 type a sentence.
- 01:12 I can tab three more times and it jumps ahead by half inch spaces and
- 01:16 I can type another sentence.
- 01:18 Now I'm gonna hit Enter a couple times to give it some space,
- 01:21 then I'm gonna scroll down a little bit.
- 01:23 All right, now the I-beam that's on the center of my screen,
- 01:26 I'm moving around, there's a little trick with this thing.
- 01:29 You can actually double-click anywhere on the piece of paper, double-click and
- 01:34 it will force your insertion point to go to that spot.
- 01:37 So let's see, double-click, there it is,
- 01:41 right dead center of the screen and now I can type a sentence again, okay?
- 01:46 Now I can double-click way over here on the right hand side of the screen and
- 01:50 it forces the insertion point right there and I can type a sentence again.
- 01:54 Now, something happened here that you aren't gonna notice cuz I didn't point it
- 01:59 out quite yet.
- 02:00 But I want you to pay attention right up here to this little group called
- 02:02 Paragraph.
- 02:04 Now when I click into this sentence, it's aligned left.
- 02:07 Notice that this little paragraph button came on to tell me I'm aligned left.
- 02:12 Now on this one in the center,
- 02:13 cuz I clicked in the center of the page, watch this button right here.
- 02:17 It's about to light up.
- 02:19 I'm gonna click right here, and there it is.
- 02:21 It lit up cuz it knows I'm in the center of the page.
- 02:24 Now this one, right down here?
- 02:25 Since I double-clicked on the right-hand side,
- 02:27 this third button is going to light up when I click onto this sentence.
- 02:31 There you go.
- 02:32 So it's just basically telling you, even though you double-clicked on the paper,
- 02:36 Microsoft Word was smart enough to know, you want that right aligned or
- 02:39 you want this one center aligned.
- 02:41 Now you can of course force anything to go where you want it.
- 02:45 So I'm gonna scroll down a little further.
- 02:48 So right down here I'll double-click to force my insertion point and
- 02:53 I'll paste a sentence.
- 02:55 And now I wanna force this sentence to go to the right.
- 02:58 Well, I'm already still clicked into the sentence, so
- 03:00 I'm just going to hit this button.
- 03:02 And there it's slammed right over to the right-hand side of the paper.
- 03:05 Change your mind and want it in the center?
- 03:06 Okay, just click Center and there it is, or click Left and
- 03:10 it comes back to the left.
- 03:11 You have full control over where your sentences land.
- 03:15 Now you can move them around with space bars and tabs or
- 03:18 you can double-click before you even start typing or
- 03:22 even after you've typed it, you can move them around by pressing these buttons.
- 03:26 All right, so that is how you navigate around the document and
- 03:29 that is how you place text in different spots.
- 03:32 You have a lot of control over this document, you just didn't know that.
- 03:36 So, there you go. Thank you so much.
