Quick reference
File, New
Easily find pre-designed templates in Microsoft Word for letters, resumes, posters, and more.
When to use
Rather than designing your own flyers or business letters from scratch, let Microsoft Word help you with the catalog of pre-designed templates. This is a time-saving feature that you have access to free of charge and with no copyright infringement (because you paid for the Microsoft Word program on your computer.)
Instructions
1. Click the FILE ribbon
then click NEW
The Search box appears at the top of the screen.
2. In the Search box, type the topic to find: “Thank you letter” or “Resume“.
Notice all instances of that topic are displayed.
3. To open a template, double-click it. To pin it to the top for future use, click the tiny push pin on the corner of the thumbnail image.
4. Edit the document as necessary, save, and print.
Login to download- 00:04 Let's take a look at the File ribbon and the New section.
- 00:09 Up on top of your ribbons the very first one is File.
- 00:13 When we open that, it immediately opens and activates Home and
- 00:18 then it says New, and then we have the option of a Blank document or
- 00:23 a tour of Word, or insert your first table, maybe make a calendar.
- 00:28 And then of course it does list our most recent documents that we've worked on.
- 00:33 We can double click the blank document and see a brand new blank screen.
- 00:38 That said, I'm going to go ahead and close that.
- 00:41 Now let's go back to File, and this time instead of the Home and
- 00:45 looking at the New banner, let's take a look at the option that says New.
- 00:50 It shows us again a blank document, but take a look underneath.
- 00:53 We have Office documents and Personal documents.
- 00:58 Under the Office documents we can search for
- 01:00 any type of document we'd like to create.
- 01:03 Or the suggested searches, Business, Cards, Flyers.
- 01:09 I clicked on Business and we can see many options for
- 01:13 pre-designed business documents.
- 01:16 They don't look like letters necessarily,
- 01:18 but they are definitely things you would use in a business.
- 01:23 In this case, I've got a letterhead design, so I'll go ahead and
- 01:27 click that one and go ahead and click on Create.
- 01:29 When this comes in, it has fields that it wants me to click into and just type.
- 01:34 Now notice I clicked it once and it turned gray, so I can just put in today's date.
- 01:38 Click again, put in the recipient, the street address, the city state zip.
- 01:43 So these are pre-formatted with fields just waiting for
- 01:47 you to change them to the text you like.
- 01:49 It even tells you what to do.
- 01:51 In this part, it tells you how to write the letter, if you want to customize
- 01:56 the pallet, if you want to change fonts, or double click the letterhead.
- 02:00 It has an ending and then you can go ahead and put in your phone, your email,
- 02:04 your website, and fax at the bottom.
- 02:06 A pre-designed letterhead.
- 02:08 All right, let's go back up there to File and New.
- 02:13 Let's find something that might be relevant for us.
- 02:15 How about a resume?
- 02:19 You can go ahead and scroll through these.
- 02:22 Scan them, see if you like them.
- 02:23 I don't know one HR department that would ever turn away your resume because you
- 02:28 used a preformatted one from Microsoft Word.
- 02:30 They would just be impressed at how professional it looks.
- 02:33 I'll go ahead and click on just a basic one.
- 02:35 When that pops open, review it to see if that's something I want to use,
- 02:40 and then go ahead and hit Create.
- 02:43 Now all of the preformatted documents under File New,
- 02:46 there is no copyright infringement at all.
- 02:49 That is one of the benefits to having a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- 02:54 At this point, we will go ahead and type in our information, finish it,
- 02:59 save it, print it, and mail or maybe just attach to an email and submit our resume.
- 03:05 Okay, at this point, go ahead and just click on File, New and
- 03:09 explore, you will be amazed at what you find in there.
