Topic: Camera Shake Reduction
Useful tips for reducing that camera shake blur.
When to use
Sometimes that perfect shot is marred by a rocking boat, or a passing bump, or just too much coffee that morning. Let’s see if the camera shake reduction tool can help.
Instructions
Set project
- Load photo and convert to smart object.
Load shape reduction filter
- Menu/Filter/Sharpen/Shape Reduction.
- Photoshop will automatically analyse photo and sharpen blurs.
Adjust settings
- Use the blur trace bounds to reduce any halo-effects.
- Decrease the smoothing.
- 00:04 Hey everybody Howard Pinsky here, taking a look at one of the new features coming in
- 00:08 Adobe Photoshop CC that everybody's been looking forward to, shake reduction.
- 00:12 Which was called the de-blurring tool at Adobe Max
- 00:15 which caused a little bit of confusion.
- 00:17 So before I show it to you in action, I wanna stress what it does do and
- 00:20 what it doesn't do.
- 00:22 Now it does not fix out of focus images, so
- 00:25 if you were taking a photo of something three feet in front of you,
- 00:28 but mistakenly focused on something eight feet in front of you, you're out of luck.
- 00:32 This won't fix that problem.
- 00:33 However, if you were taking a photo and
- 00:35 someone nudged you a little bit and that camera shook.
- 00:38 This feature will help by reducing that camera shake and sharpening up your image.
- 00:42 Let me show you exactly how it works.
- 00:45 Before I go ahead and
- 00:46 add any filters, I always wanna make sure to convert it to a smart object.
- 00:49 Just so we can go back and make changes later on if necessary.
- 00:53 Now that that's done,
- 00:54 I can go to the Filter menu, down to Sharpen and then Shake Reduction.
- 00:58 Now, when this launches, Photoshop is gonna automatically start
- 01:01 detecting which direction that blur is coming from, and
- 01:04 it is gonna do it's best to sharpen up the image as nicely as possible.
- 01:08 And you can already tell it's done a pretty nice job,
- 01:10 if I turn off the preview, and
- 01:12 then back on, it's already sharpened up quite nicely.
- 01:15 But if I press the Q key on my keyboard to bring up my loop and
- 01:19 I move over the top of the head here, you can see that when I release my mouse to
- 01:22 see the after, we have a little bit of haloing going on around the edges.
- 01:26 This can be dealt with using the Blur Trace Bounds right over here.
- 01:30 If I go ahead and decrease this, to let's say somewhere around 20,
- 01:33 Photoshop is gonna re-analyze that area with a smaller Blur Trace Bound and
- 01:38 you're gonna notice that we have a much smaller halo effect.
- 01:41 Now down below we also have Smoothing and Artifact Suppression.
- 01:45 Once again if I press Q on my keyboard to bring up my loop,
- 01:47 you may notice there's a lot of smoothing going on.
- 01:50 But I might want it a little bit sharper, which may produce a little bit of noise,
- 01:53 but I'm not too concerned about that as I'm only uploading this photo to Facebook.
- 01:57 So pressing Q to get rid of my loop,
- 01:59 I'm gonna decrease the smoothing just a little bit.
- 02:01 Somewhere around, let's say 15.
- 02:02 And Photoshop is gonna apply that change and
- 02:04 sharpen up the image a little bit more.
- 02:07 So once again, if we go to our before and then our after.
- 02:11 We can see that Photoshop has done a pretty nice job of
- 02:13 sharpening up the image.
- 02:14 And if we press OK, Photoshop is gonna apply that to our image and
- 02:17 once again, we have our before and our after.
- 02:20 Let me zoom just a little bit.
- 02:23 There's our before and there's our after.
- 02:25 It's not a miracle worker.
- 02:27 You're not gonna get super-sharp, perfect-looking images.
- 02:30 But if you are just looking to sharpen up the image, just a little bit to reduce
- 02:33 that camera shake, and then upload the photo to Facebook, it is gonna be great.
- 02:36 Let me show you one more example.
- 02:38 Here's a photo of an elephant.
- 02:39 Obviously you can tell if we zoom in,
- 02:41 we have a little bit of camera shake going on.
- 02:43 So once again, Filter > Sharpen > Shake Reduction, and Photoshop is gonna start to
- 02:48 analyze the photo to determine which direction the blur is coming from.
- 02:52 And in just a moment, you're gonna see the final result.
- 02:55 And there it is.
- 02:56 Just by launching the filter, we already have a nice result.
- 02:59 But I'm gonna go ahead and decrease the smoothing a little bit.
- 03:01 It did smooth it a little bit too much for
- 03:03 my liking and then here's the before and here's the after.
- 03:07 So if you have any images that suffer a little bit from camera shake.
- 03:11 You want to take it into Photoshop CC and try out the new shake reduction feature.
- 03:15 You may be surprised at the results you're gonna get.
- 03:17 Again, it's not a miracle worker and it won't fix out of focus images, but for
- 03:21 subtle camera shake,
- 03:22 the new shake reduction feature in Photoshop CC is gonna work great.
