Topic: Lightroom-Radial Filter
Use the radial filter to add quick vignettes and style touches directly in Lightroom.
When to use
Another quick edit technique of a task that you used to need Photoshop for, add a quick vignette or other radial gradient to an image.
Instructions
Create a Vignette
- Open in image in Lightroom.
- Go to the ‘Develop’ tab.
- In the icons at the top of the info panel is a circle next to a brush, this is the radial filter.
- Click the radial filter, and then drag out an ellipse on the image.
(Tip: Double click to auto set an ellipse to the size of the image)
Use the adjustments:
- Exposure to darken the areas defined by the radial
- Also turn down, Highlights and Shadows
- Increases Contrast
To add color to the vignette
- Click on the color box and choose color.
- 00:04 In previous versions of Lightroom, you were able to apply
- 00:07 selective adjustments using the graduated filter and the adjustment brush.
- 00:11 But, a lot of users wanted to apply a painless and
- 00:13 customizable vignette around their images.
- 00:16 Or, selective adjustments in a radial format.
- 00:19 Well now, in Lightroom 5 with the new radial filter your life is gonna get so
- 00:23 much easier.
- 00:24 Let me show you how this new tool works.
- 00:27 With the new radial filter located right beside the graduated filter,
- 00:30 you can drag out an ellipse or you can even command or
- 00:33 control, double click on the image to set the ellipse to the bounds of your image.
- 00:38 From there, the adjustments that you know and love are ready to be put into use, so
- 00:43 if I wanted to create a nice, dark vignette around my image.
- 00:45 I can turn my exposure down, turn my highlights down,
- 00:49 turn the shadows down a little bit.
- 00:50 Let's increase the contrast a little bit, and
- 00:52 you can already see that we have a nice, dark vignette surrounding the image.
- 00:56 Of course, all the other options are available to you,
- 00:58 so if I want to add a bit of a color to my vignette.
- 01:01 I can simply click on a color picker and select a color just like this.
- 01:05 And, just like the graduated filter, I can add another radial filter if I want to,
- 01:09 I can also invert it so the adjustments are applied to the center,
- 01:12 I can feather the mask, and so on and so forth.
- 01:16 And, that's the new radial filter coming in Lightroom 5.
- 01:19 Finally, you have a painless, customizable way to add nice vignettes to your images.
