Healing brush features in Lightroom.
When to use
Lightroom has a few ways to repair spots and blemishes in photos, explore them here.
Instructions
The Healing brush
- With your image open go to the develop tab in Lightroom: In the tools section the healing brush is a circle with and arrow (2nd from left).
- Click and drag over the area that you want to heal (or a single click for a spot).
- The source is represented by a dot icon, which you position as needed.
- 00:04 Hey, everyone.
- 00:04 Howard Pinsky here with a look at one of the new features within Lightroom 5,
- 00:08 the improved healing brush.
- 00:10 Now, in previous versions of Lightroom the healing brush used the circle spots method
- 00:15 to heal your photos.
- 00:16 When you have the healing brush selected, and you clicked and dragged, the click
- 00:20 would be the area to be healed, and the end of the drag would be the source.
- 00:24 Now, while this method works well, you're limited to a circular area.
- 00:28 Now, in Lightroom 5, you have, well, a healing brush.
- 00:32 In addition to the spot method, you can now use the healing brush as a brush.
- 00:36 What a novel concept.
- 00:38 So, by default, you have the ability to now click and
- 00:40 drag over top of the area that you want to heal, and this time when you click and
- 00:44 drag you're gonna be creating a brush stroke.
- 00:47 And, when the brush is released the healing takes place,
- 00:50 similar to the spot healing brush in Photoshop.
- 00:52 But, of course, if you like the way the healing brush worked in previous versions,
- 00:56 you still have that available to you.
- 00:57 Performing a single click will create a circle spot, just like it did before, and
- 01:02 attempt to heal the clicked area.
- 01:04 Now, if the result isn't as desired, the source spot can be moved with a click and
- 01:08 a drag on the source.
- 01:10 Now, if you're not seeing the spot overlay,
- 01:12 you can activate it by pressing the H key.
- 01:15 You can also use the Cmd or Ctrl drag method.
- 01:18 This will create a spot at the starting location, and
- 01:20 define the source at the ending location, just like it did in Lightroom 4.
- 01:25 Again, these spots can be moved even after they've been created.
- 01:29 So, for those of you who are looking for
- 01:30 an actual healing brush in Lightroom 5, it's now available.
- 01:35 And, for those of you who liked how it worked in Lightroom 4,
- 01:37 all you have to do is hold down your Cmd key on the Mac or Ctrl key on Windows.
- 01:41 And, that's a look at the improved healing brush in Lightroom 5.
