When to use
When using multiple text layers for designing things like posters, and pamphlets, or more idiosyncratic projects, like comic style text bubbles, or when adding text fields over photographs. Example use would be if you were creating a series of posters that will have different color text, depending on the theme.
Instructions
Select the text layers that you wish change
- In the ‘Layer Panel’, hold down the Control key in the PC and the Command key in the Mac and select the text layers that you want to change
Simple changes can then be made from the options toolbar at the top (or shortcut ‘T’ for access)
- The changes available include things like
- Color
- Font
- Text size
- Justification
Making more complex changes will involve bringing up the Character Panel .
- From the Window dropdown menu, select the Character Panel
- This will allow you to adjust many complex text options, like tracking and sub-script etc.
Tip
While within a single text layer, you can change single words and letters by using the text tool to highlight only the words or letters of the layer that you want to change. Useful for highlighting words, without changing the text placement.

- 00:04 Today, I'm going to show you how easy it is to edit multiple type layers at once.
- 00:09 In a document like this, which contains many type layers with similar styles,
- 00:13 editing each layer individually would be a tedious process.
- 00:17 The good news is, you can edit multiple or all of them at once,
- 00:21 just like you would edit them individually.
- 00:25 In your layers panel, instead of only selecting one of the type layers, hold down your
- 00:29 Command or Control key,
- 00:29 Command on the Mac, Control on Windows, and click on the
- 00:33 other type layers that you want to edit. Once the layers have been selected,
- 00:37 there are two ways to make the edits. First, you have access to the standard
- 00:41 type properties
- 00:42 on the 'Options bar' when your type tool is active. If your type tool is not active,
- 00:47 simply press the T key on your keyboard. These options will allow you to make
- 00:51 changes to the font,
- 00:52 style, size, justification,
- 00:55 and color of all the selected type layers. For instance, if I wasn't happy
- 01:00 with the font of these layers,
- 01:01 choosing a new font from the menu will update them all at once.
- 01:05 The same goes for the other properties as well. Want to change the color of the
- 01:09 text?
- 01:09 Select a new color, press OK and watch all the selected layers change at once.
- 01:14 The second option you have is to use the character panel,
- 01:18 which can be found under the Window menu. This panel not only gives you the standard
- 01:22 options which were just covered,
- 01:23 but it also allows you to adjust text properties, such as tracking,
- 01:27 kerning, scaling and so on. I'll be covering this panel more in depth
- 01:32 in the future,
- 01:33 but as a quick example, if I wanted to slightly space out the characters
- 01:37 in all the text layers at once, increasing the tracking will do exactly that.
- 01:41 Now, in addition to changing the properties of multiple type layers
- 01:45 at once,
- 01:45 you can also change individual words or characters in a single type layer.
- 01:49 On this letter that says 'to create a masterpiece,''
- 01:53 using my type tool I can highlight only the word 'masterpiece'
- 01:56 and then make necessary changes on the Options bar or in the character panel.
- 02:01 To make this word standout, I'm going to change this color to a bright orange
- 02:05 and then accept the changes when I'm finished. And that's how you can edit multiple type
- 02:10 layers at once,
- 02:10 and change the properties of individual words within a single type layer.
