Slide 5, Our Services - Animated Bullets and Cut-out images - Part 2
In Part 2 of this lesson we are going to continue building the 'Our Services' slide. We will add a cut-out image and also apply animation to all elements on the slide. Animation should always be used sparingly to add to the presentation and not distract.
When to use
Cut-out images from the Stock Images gallery in PowerPoint can be used to add personality to any slide. Animating slide elements is a good way of controlling the pace of the slide, make it more visually interesting and emphasize important content.
Instructions
Add list items
Most lists in PowerPoint use bullets. We are going to use text boxes instead but change the text direction from horizontal to vertical.
- From the Insert tab, in the Text group, select Text box.
- Draw a text box on the slide.
- Add the text 'Content Creation'.
- From the Home tab, in the Font group, change the Font color to White, Background 1 and the Font size to 16pts.
- Select the placeholder.
- From the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, select Text Direction.
- Choose Rotate 270 degrees.
- Resize the text box if neccessary.
- Move the text box into position so it runs vertically next to the dotted line.
- Press CTRL+D to duplicate the text box.
- Add the next heading 'Live Training'.
- Move the text box into position.
- Repeat steps 10-12 and create two more labels for 'Blogs and Guides' and 'Course Authoring'.
Add a Cutout Image
- From the Insert tab, in the Pictures group, select Stock Images.
- Select the Cutout People tab.
- Browse for an appropriate image.
- Click Insert.
- Move the image into position on the right-hand side of the slide. Use the resize handles if the image is too big or too small.
Group Objects
Each object on the slide is an individual object until we group it with something else. If we apply animation to all the individual objects on the slide, they will be animated separately. Ensure you group together objects you want to animate as one.
- Select the first icon, hold down SHIFT and select the shape, the line and the text box labelled 'Content Creation'.
- Press CTRL+G to group them together.
- Repeat the steps for the other shapes, icons, lines and text boxes.
Add Animation Effects
Animation Effects are organized into four different categories: Entrance, Emphasis, Exit and Motion Paths. We will focus on entrance effects which execute on-click or when the slide loads.
- Select the Cutout Image.
- From the Animations tab, in the Animation group, select Fade from Entrance Effects.
- Select the 'Content Creation' group of objects.
- From the Animations tab, in the Animation group, select Fade from Entrance Effects.
- Repeat the steps and apply animation to the remaining groups.
Review Animation
Once animation effects have been applied to a slide, it's always worth running the slide show to make sure they are performing as expected.
- From the Slide Show tab, in the Start Slide Show group, select From Current Slide.
- Press ESC to exit the slide show.
Hints & tips
- Use animation sparingly and don't use lots of difference effects in one presentation.
- 00:00 Welcome back to Part 2, where this lesson continues.
- 00:02 What I now want to add is some vertical text.
- 00:03 And this is easier than
- 00:08 you might think.
- 00:12 So we're going to insert a text box, and I'm just going to draw it up here for
- 00:13 the time being. And this first one is just going
- 00:19 to say Content Creation.
- 00:24 I'm going to apply some formatting to this, so let's change the text to white.
- 00:29 And I'm going to make this slightly smaller, let's do 16 point font.
- 00:34 Now, if you want to flip this around, so
- 00:37 it's running vertically instead of horizontally,
- 00:39 on the Home tab in the Paragraph group, you have a Text Direction option.
- 00:44 So I'm going to select this one here to rotate the text 270 degrees.
- 00:50 Now, it looks a bit strange, but all I need to do is resize this, And
- 00:56 my text is going to flip around.
- 00:59 Let's move this into position, and I'm going to position it just there.
- 01:00 Now, once again, I'm going to Ctrl+D and then edit this text.
- 01:07 And it is a bit awkward typing the other way around, But
- 01:14 we can do that fairly simply, and then move that into position and
- 01:18 repeat the same process two more times.
- 01:22 And one of the newer things that's been added to PowerPoint is cutout people stock
- 01:26 images.
- 01:28 So these can be quite fun if you're looking for
- 01:30 something to liven up your presentation.
- 01:32 You'll find these under Insert > Pictures > Stock Images.
- 01:38 And if you look at the headings running across the top,
- 01:40 one of them is Cutout People.
- 01:42 And this is a whole library full of people in different poses with transparent
- 01:46 backgrounds that you can use in your presentations.
- 01:49 So I'm going to scroll across and select one of these ladies.
- 01:53 Let's go for Carrie.
- 01:55 And I'm going to choose this image just here and Insert.
- 02:00 And there she is.
- 02:00 So now I can move her over.
- 02:02 I'm going to resize her so she's a bit smaller and position her over here.
- 02:07 So it just really adds a little bit more interest,
- 02:10 a little bit more fun to your presentation.
- 02:12 Now, the final thing I need to do here is add animation to my slide.
- 02:17 Now, this is really just an introduction to animation.
- 02:20 I am going to go into this in a lot more detail in later lessons.
- 02:24 So the first thing I want to do here is I want to group together all of
- 02:27 the individual objects which make up this content creation section.
- 02:31 So I have an icon, I'm going to hold down Shift and select the shape.
- 02:36 I'm going to select the dotted line and also the content creation textbox and
- 02:41 press Ctrl+G to group them together.
- 02:43 If I don't do that, when I apply the animation, it's only going to apply to
- 02:48 one of these objects, whereas I want the whole thing to kind of pop up.
- 02:53 Let's do the same for these others.
- 02:55 Let's select everything, Ctrl+G, Ctrl+G.
- 02:58 So for this, you really need to kind of think in
- 03:03 your mind what order you want things to appear in.
- 03:08 So when I go to this slide, I want the heading just to be there.
- 03:12 I don't want to animate that, I want it there at the top.
- 03:15 The next thing I want to appear is my cutout of this lady.
- 03:20 So let's select her and then jump up to the Animations tab.
- 03:23 And this is where you can apply all different types of animation.
- 03:28 Now, as I said, I'm going to get into more detail on this a bit later on,
- 03:30 because you have entrance animation, emphasis, exit, and
- 03:32 also things called motion paths.
- 03:33 But for the time being, I want to apply my animation when the shape or
- 03:34 the object appears, so that is going to be an entrance effect.
- 03:35 And I don't want anything too dramatic here,
- 03:43 I just want her to fade in, so
- 03:48 let's select Fade.
- 03:52 Now, when you've applied animation to something on your slide,
- 03:55 you're going to see a little number, just here.
- 03:57 So number one, she is the first thing that's going to appear.
- 04:00 I then want content creation to appear.
- 04:04 But for this one, I want it to fly in from the bottom, as it's doing now.
- 04:08 If I wanted that to fly in from a different direction,
- 04:11 I could choose Effect Options and choose from bottom-left, from left,
- 04:15 from top, so on and so forth.
- 04:18 But bottom is exactly what I want.
- 04:20 And I'm going to apply that same animation to the rest of these, so
- 04:25 I'm just selecting and clicking Fly In.
- 04:28 So now let's play our presentation and see what that looks like.
- 04:31 Now, I don't want to play it from the beginning.
- 04:34 So I'm going to go to the Slideshow tab, and
- 04:36 I'm going to say Play From Current Slide.
- 04:39 The slide starts with just the title.
- 04:41 When I click, a lady fades in.
- 04:43 When I click again, the Content Creation point pops up.
- 04:48 I can then talk about that.
- 04:51 Then we have the Live Training, then Blogs & Guides, and finally, Course Authoring.
- 04:57 So with just a few clicks, we've been able to take basically what would essentially
- 05:01 be a bulleted list of points and make it a lot more interesting.
- 05:04 But for now, that is it.
- 05:06 I'm going to head over to the next lesson.
