- 00:10 effectively in business.
- 00:11 For starters, if it's a really, really important call,
- 00:14 perhaps you're interviewing for a job.
- 00:17 Perhaps you're trying to get the biggest new client for your business ever.
- 00:21 You want to sound your absolute best.
- 00:23 Here's a tip, stand when you're doing the phone call.
- 00:29 You'll have more breath.
- 00:32 You'll have more energy.
- 00:34 You'll have a greater range in your voice.
- 00:35 And try to find a mirror you can look at and actually smile.
- 00:39 I realize that sounds cheesy, but when you smile, it comes out in your voice.
- 00:44 You'll sound more upbeat, more focused, more energetic, more excited to be there.
- 00:51 That's what new employers want to hear.
- 00:52 That's also what clients and client prospects want to hear.
- 00:55 Another quick tip, if you're conducting a business call through FaceTime video or
- 01:01 Skype video, most of the time people are holding a phone down like this.
- 01:06 What happens is it shoots up your nose.
- 01:09 The brightest thing on the screen is going to be the light above you.
- 01:12 It's going to look horrible, your face will be all blackened out.
- 01:15 Here's the quick tip, hold the phone a couple of inches above your eyes.
- 01:22 Now it's a much more flattering angle on your face.
- 01:25 The lighting will be better because you are not shooting
- 01:29 the lights from the ceiling.
- 01:31 Couple of quick tips, this course is going to be full of them.
- 01:35 So get ready, by the time we are done,
- 01:38 you're going to be a real pro at using the cellphone and a regular phone,
- 01:43 and any kind of phone for every aspect of your career.
- 01:47 So why is there a need for this course?
- 01:50 People have been using phones their whole life.
- 01:52 These days, five year olds use phones.
- 01:55 What's the difference for business?
- 01:57 Well, let me tell you, there's a huge difference between how you use a phone in
- 02:01 business, your work life versus your personal life.
- 02:04 There are a lot of things that are perfectly acceptable to do with friends,
- 02:09 family.
- 02:10 But if you do it in a business situation, you will lose clients,
- 02:15 you will lose customers, you will lose promotions.
- 02:18 So let's clearly define what we're talking about here.
- 02:21 This is not how to call your best friend and say let's go to a party.
- 02:25 This is about how to use the phone for business.
- 02:28 And really understanding the differences, what's appropriate or what isn't.
- 02:33 If you call your best friend and you don't leave a message,
- 02:36 you know they're going to see you call, they'll call you back, doesn't matter.
- 02:41 But if a very important prospect or client calls you and it goes to your cell phone.
- 02:46 And you then call back and you don't leave a message, they have no idea it's you.
- 02:53 They may have had 10 or 20 other calls come in.
- 02:56 They're not going to go through and see what number corresponds to what.
- 03:00 So if they think you didn't return their call, they're going to think you don't
- 03:04 care, you don't want their business, you don't want the job.
- 03:07 So again, clear cut example what can work, calling your best friend or
- 03:12 family member can mean absolute career destruction if you do the same
- 03:16 thing when it comes to how you use the phone in your business life.
- 03:20 So these are the things we're going to cover in this course of really learning
- 03:25 this division.
- 03:26 I'm not telling you, you have to use my system for
- 03:30 every call in your personal life, you don't.
- 03:33 And you don't have to use the techniques I'm going to advocate in every single
- 03:37 situation in your business life.
- 03:39 But when in doubt,
- 03:40 I believe these are the basic principles that will help you the most.
- 03:45 And eliminate the chances that you've needlessly offended someone,
- 03:50 confused a client, customer, prospect, boss or co-worker.
- 03:55 These are the principles that will protect you the most.
- 03:59 And help you advance your message, your agenda, your business, and your career.
