About this lesson
Calling a friend with your phone will answer important questions about voice and reception quality.
- 00:04 You need to know exactly how your technology works.
- 00:07 I don't mean you literally have to open the back of the phone and
- 00:11 figure out where every little electronic device connects, but
- 00:15 you do need to know the basics of what the most effective way is to use your phone.
- 00:20 My recommendation is, call a friend.
- 00:23 In this case, it could be a family member, and ask them, how do I sound?
- 00:28 And talk to it an inch away, inch and a half, two inches and
- 00:34 on, and get feedback from them on what actually sounds the best.
- 00:40 Because every phone can be a little bit different,
- 00:42 your voice can be a little different.
- 00:45 You need to know what is the best way to use your phone as far as the distance
- 00:50 from the microphone.
- 00:51 I can tell you right now,
- 00:52 the best way is not going to be 2 feet away with on speakerphone.
- 00:56 We've already talked about that.
- 00:58 I hope I've convinced you not to use speakerphone other than extreme
- 01:03 situations where you absolutely have to have both hands free.
- 01:08 A couple of other things that are relatively modern problems
- 01:12 with respect to phones, especially for
- 01:16 those of you who get new cell phones frequently, as I do.
- 01:21 I had recently upgraded from one iPhone to the next,
- 01:25 went to the same company that always sold me the phone.
- 01:29 I asked for a protective cover.
- 01:32 I got the protective cover and all of a sudden,
- 01:35 I'm noticing about a third of the people I'm speaking to are saying?
- 01:39 What?
- 01:40 Hmm?
- 01:41 They couldn't hear me.
- 01:42 I kept on thinking it was because it was a new phone, it needed an update.
- 01:47 Well, no.
- 01:49 The company that sold me the phone and sold me the protective cover,
- 01:53 sold me the wrong version of a cover.
- 01:55 So it fit the right size, but it was for the previous edition.
- 02:00 And the version they gave me covered one of the three microphones on the phone,
- 02:05 so it was destroying the audio quality.
- 02:08 I'm ashamed to say it took me a couple of months to finally figure this out.
- 02:13 Very important.
- 02:14 When people tell you they're having trouble hearing you, believe them.
- 02:21 Do whatever it takes to make sure you're coming across clear.
- 02:25 That's why I recommend testing.
- 02:28 That's why I recommend instantly trying to troubleshoot, change things.
- 02:33 Make sure you don't have a cover that's obscuring one of the microphones.
- 02:37 So this is your first homework assignment.
- 02:40 Call a family friend, a colleague, could be someone in the next cubicle,
- 02:45 and ask them to tell you, to give you honest feedback.
- 02:49 How does it sound?
- 02:50 Do you sound muffled?
- 02:52 Is there anything unclear?
- 02:55 How is the volume?
- 02:57 Really get feedback.
- 03:00 And if there's any problem at all, let's figure out the solution right now.
- 03:04 So please, don't just fast forward to the next video.
- 03:07 Take 2 seconds and call somebody, and let's really get an assessment.
- 03:11 Figure out how close you need to be to your phone.
- 03:14 And if there are any other problems with the microphone on your phone,
- 03:19 or if there's anything covering it.
