About this lesson
Here's a template for what to say in a voicemail that provides all the information they need.
- 00:04 When you're leaving a voicemail,
- 00:06 it's critically important you do the following things.
- 00:09 For starters, state your name, your organization, and
- 00:13 the purpose of your call.
- 00:15 Speak a little bit slower than normal and
- 00:19 articulate not in a big fake phony way but
- 00:23 articulate a little more clearly than usual.
- 00:27 Give your phone number once and then give it a second time,
- 00:32 even a little bit slower.
- 00:34 If you do that you'll come across professional, you'll make it easy for
- 00:39 people to get back to you.
- 00:41 And the person you're calling, you may think knows you by heart,
- 00:44 but they may know ten other people with your name.
- 00:47 So unless you have a really distinctive name, state your full name.
- 00:51 I mean your first or your last name at least,
- 00:53 you don't have to state your middle name.
- 00:54 But state your first and last name, the organization, make it clear for them.
- 01:00 And if it's any kind of a call where you're not certain the person is going to
- 01:05 want to call you back right away.
- 01:07 Perhaps a prospect, dangle something interesting.
- 01:10 I don't mean cheesy or
- 01:11 provide you a call me if you want to get rich in the next 24 hours.
- 01:14 I'm not suggesting you do anything overtly manipulative,
- 01:19 and cheesy, and filled with hokum.
- 01:22 But if you can give them a taste of what you're calling about and
- 01:27 why it might benefit them to call you back,
- 01:30 you'll increase the odds that they call you back.
- 01:34 A lot of people they get a voicemail and they hang up.
- 01:39 I beg you, do not do that.
- 01:42 I get some of you are watching this and saying, my gosh,
- 01:47 TJ is a really old grumpy man.
- 01:50 I'm just trying to help you make more money and succeed in business.
- 01:54 I understand there are a lot of you,
- 01:57 under I'll say about the age of 39, where you never ever,
- 02:02 ever, ever, ever leave voicemail with friends and family.
- 02:07 Fine.
- 02:08 I'm not trying to change you.
- 02:11 But if you're calling a customer, a client, a prospect,
- 02:15 do not call and then leave a voicemail.
- 02:18 It's highly irritating to a lot of people.
- 02:20 They can't stand it.
- 02:21 They're thinking about is this a telemarketer I'm wasting my time or
- 02:25 is this something important?
- 02:27 Do I need to call back or what do I do?
- 02:30 It creates all this anxiety.
- 02:33 So if you're going to call someone leave a message.
- 02:37 That's why the technology is there.
- 02:39 There is literally nothing bad that can happen to you if you leave
- 02:44 a voicemail after you've called someone and it goes to voicemail.
- 02:49 It just makes life easier for everyone.
- 02:51 You don't have to do this constant game of phone tag of people trying to figure out
- 02:56 why do we even start trying to contact each other?
- 02:58 It'll all be there in your initial voicemail message.
- 03:04 So please, I'm begging you call, get the voicemail, leave a message.
- 03:10 You may think you're calling an office phone, but
- 03:12 the office phone has been forwarded to someone's cell phone.
- 03:15 And if they just see a couple of missed messages it's annoying.
- 03:20 And they're going to wonder was this important,
- 03:23 is this crisis, what's really happening?
- 03:26 Why keep them in doubt?
- 03:29 It's not necessary to do that at all.
- 03:31 So please leave the voicemail message.
- 03:34 It's simple, easy technology, it has been around a long time.
- 03:39 You cannot go wrong by doing that.
