Quick reference
Using App Parts
Use App Parts to add other types of content to a page like lists and libraries. App Parts have been included in SharePoint since 2013 and are very similar to Web Parts.
When to use
We insert an App Part whenever we want to add existing SharePoint content like lists, libraries, discussion boards, etc, to the page.
Instructions
- From the Wiki Page, click Edit.
- Click in an empty section.
- Click the Insert tab.
- From the Parts group, click App Part.
We are going to insert a document library that only shows the documents for 'Team 1'. A view that filters for 'Team 1' documents has already been created in this list.
App Parts are categorized by type. Browse through the folders to become familiar with them.
- Click the Documents folder and click Add.
The document library is added as an App Part to the Wiki Page. It shows in its own small window and acts a little like a widget. Currently, all documents in the document library are showing. We only need to see documents for 'Team 1' so we need to switch the view.
- Click the drop-down arrow in the corner of the App Part.
- In the List Views section, underneath Selected Views, choose Team 1.
- Click Apply and then OK.
Hints & tips
- If you are using an older version of SharePoint (pre-2013), App Parts will not be available.
- 00:04 So far we have some basic information on our page.
- 00:08 We have a title and we also have some text, which include some Mailto links.
- 00:15 But now I want to start adding some other types of content to this page.
- 00:20 And to do that, we're going to utilize something called app parts and web parts.
- 00:25 So we're going to start out in this lesson exploring app parts.
- 00:29 And app parts have been a thing in SharePoint since 2013.
- 00:34 Prior to that, we only had access to insert web parts.
- 00:39 And for me, I very much feel that having both app parts and
- 00:43 web parts is a little bit overkill, as you can pretty much do a similar thing or
- 00:48 the same thing using either of these.
- 00:50 So let's take a look at how app parts work.
- 00:53 The first thing I'm going to do with this page is I'm going to put it into
- 00:56 edit mode.
- 00:57 Now remember, to put our page into edit mode,
- 01:00 we need to click the edit button in the top right-hand corner.
- 01:04 Now I can see those different columns, different areas of my page and
- 01:08 I can add some other content in using an app part.
- 01:12 So, I think I'm going to add mine into this little box just here.
- 01:16 Now, if you want to insert any content into your page,
- 01:19 you must make sure that you clicked on the insert ribbon.
- 01:22 And you'll see in the parts group, I have a choice of app part or web parts.
- 01:28 So what type of content do I want to insert?
- 01:31 Well, maybe on this page for training team one,
- 01:35 I want to insert a document library that only shows the documents for team one.
- 01:41 Now prior to this, I've already created a view in my document library,
- 01:46 just to filter for all the documents for team number one.
- 01:50 So this is the type of thing that you want to do,
- 01:52 then make sure that you create a view first.
- 01:55 Once I'm clicked in this little box, I can go up to app part.
- 01:58 And all the different types of content that I can insert from here are divided
- 02:02 down into different categories.
- 02:04 And you'll see the top one that I'm clicked on is documents.
- 02:08 I then have a little sub menu to the right-hand side that gives me access to
- 02:12 any lists, libraries, pages that I've created.
- 02:16 So if I want to insert any of these lists and libraries or pages,
- 02:19 I can do that from here.
- 02:21 Now, I just want to insert the document library.
- 02:25 So all I need to do here is make sure that I have documents selected.
- 02:28 I don't need to select anything else, I just need to click the add button.
- 02:33 That's going to go away and
- 02:35 it's going to pull in the document library into this part of the page.
- 02:40 And that is what we call an app part.
- 02:42 So it's kind of like, I liken it to something like a widget.
- 02:46 Now currently, I'm displaying all of the documents in this document library.
- 02:51 But because this page is specifically for training team one,
- 02:54 I want to make sure that I apply the correct view that only
- 02:57 shows the documents that are assigned to training team one.
- 03:01 So what I'm going to do here is I'm going to click the drop down and
- 03:05 I'm going to edit the web part.
- 03:07 I get this little pane open up on the right-hand side.
- 03:10 And if you take a look at this,
- 03:12 the first thing I get to choose is the view that I want to show.
- 03:15 So currently, I'm showing all documents, but if I click this drop down,
- 03:19 you can see any other views that you've created on this particular library.
- 03:23 And you can see that I have two other views, one for team two and one for
- 03:27 team one.
- 03:28 So if I select team one and then click on apply, and
- 03:32 then OK, it's now changed that view.
- 03:36 So now, I'm only seeing all of the documents assigned to team one.
- 03:40 So that is a very quick example of how you can use an app part to pull in
- 03:45 existing content from within your site.
- 03:48 I recommend that you have a lot of play around with these, add all different kinds
- 03:52 of app parts, see how they look, and see what you can do with them.
- 03:55 And obviously, once you are happy with the changes that you've made,
- 03:58 don't forget to click the save button in the top right-hand corner.
