Applying Themes and Site Settings
Change the look and feel of the site.
When to use
We change the look and feel of the site whenever we want it to look interesting, unique, and less 'out of the box'.
Instructions
Many SharePoint sites all look the same. Currently, there are more customization options in the classic experience compared to the modern experience. However, we can make changes to the look and feel
Changing the Look and Feel: Modern Experience
- Click on the Cog icon.
- Click Change the look.
- Click Theme.
- Select Dark Yellow.
- Click the Back arrow.
- Click Header to make changes to the header layout. We have already seen how to do this at the start of the course.
Changing the Look and Feel: Classic Experience
We have more options for changing how our site looks when using the classic experience.
- Go to the 'Training Tasks' List.
- Click the Cog icon.
- Select a theme for the header area.
- Click Change the look.
We can select a template that changes the color, background image, and font.
- Select a template of your choice.
- Click Change to upload your own background image.
- Click Colors and choose a different palette.
- Click the drop-down arrow next to Site Layout and select Seattle or Oslo.
- Choose a font style.
- Click Try it out! to preview.
- Click Yes, keep it.
- 00:04 It's time now to talk about the design, the look, and
- 00:07 feel of our SharePoint sites.
- 00:09 Because, really all out of the box sites look pretty much the same.
- 00:14 They all have the same kind of layout, same kind of coloring.
- 00:17 But we can make some minor changes to the way that our site looks.
- 00:21 Now, I will say, when you're using the modern experience,
- 00:24 you don't have a great deal of choice when it comes to changing the colors,
- 00:28 the fonts, the backgrounds, in your SharePoint site.
- 00:31 We only have a couple of options.
- 00:33 Some of which we've already looked at.
- 00:35 So if you click on the cog icon in the top right hand corner and
- 00:38 go down to change the look.
- 00:40 We already know that if we need to change the theme, we can jump into here and
- 00:44 then we have a list of different themes that we can apply.
- 00:47 So maybe let's go for something quite dramatic.
- 00:49 Let's go for this dark yellow.
- 00:51 And you can see that that is quite a dramatic change.
- 00:53 What about something like dark blue, maybe a gray color?
- 00:58 I think I'm going to go dramatic in this instance, just so
- 01:01 we have a real contrasting change.
- 01:03 Let's click the back arrow.
- 01:05 We can also change our header.
- 01:07 And again, this is something that we looked at at the start of the course.
- 01:10 So I'm not going to go into this again.
- 01:13 Let's click on Save.
- 01:14 Now really when it comes to customizing the look and feel, that is pretty much all
- 01:18 you can do with regards to the colors that you're using and the way that it looks.
- 01:23 Obviously, you can edit this page and you can change the layout, move things around,
- 01:27 do all of that kind of stuff.
- 01:29 But with the look and feel we have minimal customization options.
- 01:33 However, for pages that use the classic experience,
- 01:37 we do have a lot more customization options.
- 01:41 So let me show you this very quickly.
- 01:43 And let's jump in to our training task list.
- 01:46 Because this uses the classic experience.
- 01:50 So this time I'm going to jump up to the cog.
- 01:54 And take a look, I have a different set of themes down here.
- 01:58 So these themes pretty much customize that header area.
- 02:01 So I can switch to something completely different.
- 02:06 Let's go for that one just there.
- 02:08 What about if I go to change the look from up here?
- 02:11 Well, again, I have a whole host of different templates.
- 02:14 So here I can change the color, the font that I'm using, and
- 02:18 also the background imagery.
- 02:20 So I can select any one of these.
- 02:22 So let's take a look.
- 02:23 Let's go for this one down here.
- 02:25 Now you can see here, I can choose to change that background image.
- 02:29 So instead of this kind of blurred out abstract image, I could click, Change, and
- 02:35 then upload a file of my choice that I have saved off to use as the background.
- 02:40 I can also change the color palette that I'm using.
- 02:44 So if I don't particularly like these colors,
- 02:46 I can change them to something completely different.
- 02:48 I can change the site layout.
- 02:50 I have a choice of two, Seattle or Oslo.
- 02:53 And you can see as I toggle between them, the difference there.
- 02:57 And then I can choose the fonts that I want to use in this design.
- 03:01 Now, once you've set how you want your site to look, you can click on Try it Out
- 03:06 at the top and see what that looks like before applying it.
- 03:10 And if you're happy with the way that it looks, let's click, Yes keep it.
- 03:14 And you can see that that design has now been applied to my site.
- 03:18 Now if I click back on home,
- 03:20 notice that the color scheme does actually feed through.
- 03:24 You just can't access those templates unless you're in a page that uses
- 03:28 the classic view.
- 03:30 So have a little play around with those settings and see what you think.
