Quick reference
Explore The Worksheet Screen
The Worksheet screen is the main working screen of Tableau.
When to use
We'll use the Worksheet screen pretty much non-stop from here on out. It's where we'll build all of our visualizations.
Instructions
Use the worksheet screen to create a visualization.
Hints & tips
- The Worksheet Screen is the main working screen of Tableau
- Use the Worksheet Screen to create all visualizations
- 00:02 Okay, in this video, we're going to start to look at the worksheet screen.
- 00:06 And the worksheet screen is where we're going to be doing most of our work
- 00:09 throughout this course.
- 00:10 It's really the main area of Tableau,
- 00:11 is where you're going to be doing most of your work.
- 00:14 And let's dive right in and take a look at it.
- 00:16 So we're in that same screen we were looking at in the last video,
- 00:19 we can come down here and just click on sheets.
- 00:21 You can see now we're in data source.
- 00:24 If we click on sheet, boom, it pops us over to the worksheet area.
- 00:28 And this is the worksheet area.
- 00:30 Let me go ahead and click this guy right here to hide it.
- 00:33 So this seems overwhelming at first if you're looking at this screen for
- 00:38 the first time.
- 00:40 Boy, there's a lot of stuff going on here, and it can seem overwhelming.
- 00:43 But it's really not that bad, and we're going to start to dive into it.
- 00:46 And as we move on I'm just going to start doing things and
- 00:49 they'll click into place and you'll go, that looks easy, and
- 00:52 it's really not that bad. It's not as intimidating as it looks.
- 00:55 So right off the bat we see on the left hand side here we
- 00:58 have this column here and it has tables listed.
- 01:02 And you'll notice some of them are blue and some of them are green.
- 01:07 And these are measures and dimensions,
- 01:09 they used to call this the dimensions tab and this the measures tab.
- 01:12 Now they're just the blue tab and the green tab.
- 01:14 But the green ones, the measures are, well, it sounds like their measurements,
- 01:19 their numbers, right?
- 01:21 The ones above are more like categorical data.
- 01:24 So the breed, the color, the dog name,
- 01:27 versus down here, this is the count, right?
- 01:31 How many breed?
- 01:33 How many color?
- 01:34 How many license types?
- 01:36 So sort of distinguishing between these two areas is important and
- 01:40 we'll see why going forward.
- 01:41 This right here is the main screen where we're going to create all of our
- 01:46 visualizations.
- 01:47 Once we start dragging these things around, things will pop up on this screen.
- 01:52 Over here we have a pages card, a filters card, and a marked card,
- 01:55 these are very important.
- 01:56 They allow us to fine-tune our visualization in just tons of
- 02:00 different ways.
- 02:01 We can, as this one suggest, filter through the data in certain ways.
- 02:06 Here we can categorize it into different pages.
- 02:09 Here we can really drill down and change colors and sizes of things, add text,
- 02:13 do details, tooltips, all kinds of great things.
- 02:17 And the thing about Tableau is all drag and drop.
- 02:19 There's no coding involved for the most part,
- 02:21 you can do a little bit of basic coding if you want.
- 02:24 But it's mostly just drag and drop, and it just works.
- 02:28 Up here we have the two main shelves.
- 02:30 And here we have columns and rows.
- 02:32 And if we head back over to our data source, you'll notice our data.
- 02:36 And generally all data is sort of categorized in columns and rows.
- 02:40 Columns are up and down, right?
- 02:43 So the license type that's a column, the breed that's a column,
- 02:46 the color that's a column.
- 02:47 Rows are left to right, right?
- 02:49 So they're the actual records in the columns.
- 02:53 So the same thing over here, head back over to our sheet.
- 02:56 And we can designate what we want to be in columns and what we want to be in rows.
- 03:00 And we do that just by dragging these things around.
- 03:04 And generally you'll need two things,
- 03:07 you'll need a dimension, a category, for instance, breed, right?
- 03:11 So you could just bring this over and drop it in there.
- 03:14 And then you'll want a measure.
- 03:17 So we would grab the data itself, the count and drop it over there, and
- 03:21 boom, we have a thing right now.
- 03:24 You don't want this to go up and down, you want it to go side to side?
- 03:29 Well, we could just swap these places.
- 03:31 This one goes there and this one goes there, and boom, now it's over there.
- 03:35 And you can see that's the breed.
- 03:37 So we can see Alaskan Shepherd, Fox hound, etc,
- 03:42 all the different things.
- 03:45 And we can scroll, there's a scroll.
- 03:47 And this is just a count of each breed.
- 03:51 And boom, we've created our first visualization.
- 03:53 This is not a great look and visualization, but wow.
- 03:57 It's just that easy to start using Tableau.
- 03:59 We can see exactly how many hound mixes have been registered in 2018 in
- 04:03 Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, you can hover over here and
- 04:07 it says there's 349 of them.
- 04:09 This is really, really cool and really easy.
- 04:12 And this is the power of Tableau and the worksheet screen we can just very,
- 04:17 very quickly bang these out.
- 04:19 Now over here is the last thing I want to sort of point out very quickly, this show
- 04:23 me tab, has all kinds of different charts and graphs that you can use.
- 04:27 You can see by default we're using this bar graph.
- 04:28 You can see it's selected right here.
- 04:30 We can grab a pie chart.
- 04:32 It's very, very tiny.
- 04:35 And we can sort of drag these things around or mouse, and
- 04:40 there, make it a little bigger.
- 04:43 We can add labels and stuff and
- 04:44 we'll get into all this in great detail going forward in the course.
- 04:47 But for now, it's just that easy to create different visualizations,
- 04:51 that's a fun one, right?
- 04:54 That's an ugly one, but very, very cool.
- 04:58 And just that easy.
- 04:59 So that's all for this video.
- 05:00 In the next video we're going to dive into this screen a little bit more.
- 05:03 I'm going to show you some of the ins and outs of how to add different features and
- 05:07 things to this screen, how to remove different things,
- 05:09 how to add different menus and things that we might need.
- 05:12 How to hide some menus and things that we might not need.
- 05:14 And we'll start to look at all that in the next video.
