Using The Filter Card
In this lesson, you'll learn how to create a Filter Menu.
When to use
Use this technique to whenever you want to create a filter menu.
Instructions
Create a filter in the filter Card, then hover your mouse over it and click the caret that appears. Then select "Show Filter".
Hints & tips
- Create a filter as usual.
- Click the caret on that filter, and select "Show Filter" to create a permanent Filter Menu.
- 00:04 Okay, in this video I want to show you how to create filter menus.
- 00:06 So I've cleared our visualization again so that we can create this again,
- 00:10 just to get a little more practice.
- 00:11 Let's pull over our breed.
- 00:12 Let's pull over our account.
- 00:15 And let's maybe make this a packed bubble chart.
- 00:18 And let's give this a filter, so we can drag this up to filters.
- 00:23 We want just from 2000 to 9400 again, so there we go.
- 00:29 And let's drag our count into our labels.
- 00:32 And let's also do another one down here for percentage.
- 00:36 So we can Quick Table Calculation, Percentage of Total,
- 00:40 and let's drag this one in.
- 00:42 So let's say now we want to add another set of filters for specific dog breeds.
- 00:46 So we've got, what is this, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 00:51 eight nine of these guys.
- 00:52 Maybe at any given moment, we want just a few certain ones to look at.
- 00:56 Well, what we could do is grab our dog breed.
- 00:59 Control, bring it up into the filters, and add a filter.
- 01:02 And you'll notice this filter menu looks a little different because this is
- 01:05 a dimension, not a measure.
- 01:07 So we can pick which one of these we want to show.
- 01:09 So if we only want, let's say, German Shepherds,
- 01:14 we can apply and then boom, German Shepherds.
- 01:18 What if we want German Shepherds and Chihuahuas?
- 01:20 We can do that.
- 01:22 Now this is not great, every time you want to make a change or something,
- 01:25 if you're giving a presentation.
- 01:27 If you're showing something to a colleague and you want to pull different data
- 01:31 things like this, pulling up this menu like this every time and
- 01:34 making these changes is sort of a hassle.
- 01:37 So instead, what we can do is create this filter, click OK.
- 01:41 And then come over here and click on the little caret and then click Show Filter.
- 01:46 And now we get a menu over here.
- 01:48 And you can see this shows all of our breeds.
- 01:50 It hasn't been filtered - just the selection that we've chosen.
- 01:54 So what we can do is click on this and just come down here and
- 01:57 select only relevant values.
- 01:59 And when we do boom, we get a little menu of just the ones that are listed.
- 02:03 And from here, we can toggle however we want, whenever we want very quickly,
- 02:08 and very easily.
- 02:10 You can click all, boom, it goes back to all.
- 02:12 Click unclick, it goes to none, and then we can just pick certain ones.
- 02:18 Very cool and pretty easy.
- 02:19 So this is, let's see, a packed bubble chart,
- 02:23 but this will work for anything at all.
- 02:25 We could pull this up, see if I can hide this, and
- 02:28 you can see our little menu is still sitting there.
- 02:34 And we can toggle and play around with it.
- 02:37 And very, very cool.
- 02:38 So we could do the same thing with our count if we wanted to.
- 02:43 We can show the filter.
- 02:45 And you can see now it's popped up here.
- 02:47 And it's sort of a slider, because that's the data we're representing.
- 02:51 Remember, if we come through here and click on Edit filter,
- 02:54 remember we have this range of values with this slider.
- 02:58 So this slider is what's showing up here,
- 03:00 which allows us to very quickly to toggle this and add more things.
- 03:05 Really, really cool, and I think you could change this.
- 03:07 So let's go, yeah, so you can change it to at least, at most.
- 03:11 You can change the actual filter itself right here, only relevant values,
- 03:15 which is probably what we want.
- 03:18 Very cool.
- 03:20 And this gives you just a handy sort of toolbar that you
- 03:23 can toggle different things.
- 03:25 For instance, we don't want this.
- 03:27 Let's say your boss comes in and says, yeah, this is great, but
- 03:30 I really only want to know about German Shepherds, German Shepherd mixes, and
- 03:34 golden retrievers.
- 03:35 Well as he's talking you can click, click, click.
- 03:37 There you go, sir, there it is, right?
- 03:39 Very easy, and a really nice feature.
- 03:41 So that's pretty much all I want to talk about with filters and filter menus.
- 03:45 In the next video, we're going to start to look at this pages card up here.
- 03:48 So that'll be coming up in the next video.
