Creating A First Dashboard and Resizing It
In this lesson, you'll learn how to create a Dashboard and resize it.
When to use
Use this technique whenever you want to create a new Dashboard out of one or more of your Worksheets.
Instructions
To create a Dashboard, click the "New Dashboard" Icon at the bottom of the Tableau screen.
Then resize it but clicking the size caret on the left side of the Dashboard Screen.
Change the Mazimum size "Width" and "Height" to fit the Dashboard to your screen.
Hints & tips
- The "New Dashboard" icon at the bottom of the Tableau screen will create a new Dashboard.
- After you create a new Dashboard, you'll always want to resize it to fit the screen.
- 00:04 Okay, in this video I want to start to talk about creating dashboards.
- 00:08 Now dashboards are probably one of the most interesting and
- 00:11 exciting parts of Tableau.
- 00:12 They allow us to take all of our visualizations, or
- 00:15 any of them that we want, and put them all together in one place, in one dashboard,
- 00:20 in one sort of presentation screen, and have everything in still working order.
- 00:25 So we can even click through these things like we do, and
- 00:29 this animation stuff will work on the dashboard.
- 00:32 So it's a great tool for, at a glance, looking at your data,
- 00:35 comparing different charts.
- 00:37 Right now, if we want to compare this to that, we have to click back and forth.
- 00:41 And that's not great.
- 00:42 So if these two charts were right next to each other on a screen,
- 00:45 it would be much better.
- 00:46 That's what dashboards are for.
- 00:47 So in this video, we're going to start to build a dashboard.
- 00:50 We're going to create a dashboard and then resize it.
- 00:52 In the next video, we'll start adding actual data to it and
- 00:54 doing all the fun things.
- 00:56 So before we do that, let's build out a couple more of these visualizations.
- 01:00 We've only got two.
- 01:01 We got this Dog Colors one that we never did anything with.
- 01:04 Let's really quickly just grab our Color, drop it over there.
- 01:07 Let's also grab our data, drop that in there.
- 01:10 And let's change this into a pie chart.
- 01:12 So okay, that looks good.
- 01:14 Let's create one more, and I'm going to call this one,
- 01:19 let's rename this Names or maybe Dog Names.
- 01:23 So let's grab our Dog Names, bring that up here.
- 01:25 And let's add all of them, and let's grab our count.
- 01:32 And maybe we'll make this into maybe this,
- 01:37 or that, or maybe this.
- 01:40 We can come up here, and click on this, and filter these.
- 01:43 So let's go to Field and filter by count.
- 01:46 So we have at the top, the highest count names.
- 01:48 So there's 1364 Bellas and 987 Buddys.
- 01:53 So okay, that's cool.
- 01:53 So maybe we want some color in there, I don't know.
- 01:58 And we can play around with the size of this, make it a little bigger if we want.
- 02:01 But so we've got now a few different visualizations.
- 02:04 So in the coming videos, we can sort of pull all these together into a dashboard.
- 02:08 So now, how do we create a dashboard?
- 02:10 Well, it's incredibly easy.
- 02:11 Remember when we wanted to create a new worksheet, we came down here and
- 02:15 hovered over this first little box with this little square that has a little
- 02:18 plus sign next to it?
- 02:19 Well, that's the button to create a new worksheet.
- 02:22 We want the one right next to it.
- 02:24 If we hover over this, you can see New Dashboard.
- 02:27 So go ahead and click this, and then we can right-click and
- 02:30 rename this anything we want.
- 02:31 I'm just going to call it my dog dashboard, whatever.
- 02:36 And you'll notice this is the dashboard.
- 02:38 So we have now created a dashboard, it's just that easy.
- 02:41 Now there's not much in there, actually, there's nothing at all in there.
- 02:44 But we've got a dashboard.
- 02:46 So the first thing you want to do is you'll notice that it's kind of small.
- 02:49 It's only taking up this much space right here, this white block right there.
- 02:53 And you're almost certainly going to want a bigger dashboard.
- 02:55 So I want to stretch this all the way out to the whole size of our screen.
- 03:00 How do we do that?
- 03:00 Well, really easy, we just come over here to Size.
- 03:03 Click this guy, and we've got a minimum size and a maximum size.
- 03:06 I'm going to change the maximum size to, I don't know, let's just try 1500.
- 03:11 That's not going to be big enough, but we could try it.
- 03:13 And you see, boom, it resizes like that.
- 03:15 And we still got some space here.
- 03:17 So maybe I'll change this to 1800, that seems a little too big.
- 03:22 You're just going to want to play around with this to get it to the size
- 03:25 of your monitor.
- 03:26 1700 also a little too big, moving down to 1600.
- 03:29 Okay, that's looking better.
- 03:31 And maybe, I don't know, 1650, I think that's good.
- 03:34 And you can do the same thing with the height here.
- 03:37 I'm going to change this, too.
- 03:38 It's at 860 now, I'll change it to 900.
- 03:41 Okay, that looks pretty good, and we're ready to go.
- 03:43 So here is our dashboard.
- 03:45 In the next video, we'll start to add stuff to it.
- 03:47 But it's really just that easy.
- 03:49 Now we can click out of here, and we're ready to go.
- 03:53 So your monitor size and resolution will likely be different than mine.
- 03:57 So you're really going to want to play around with this size to make it whatever
- 04:00 size you want.
- 04:02 I'll leave that to you and your monitor size, but just that easy.
- 04:05 So that's all for this video.
- 04:06 In the next video,
- 04:07 we'll look at actually adding our visualizations to our dashboard.
