Text Formats
Text-formatting is available inside of Todoist and customizing has become a popular habit as a way to visualize parts of your task better. Whether it is bold text or italicising a task, adding this layer to a task helps to determine what is up next. Adding bold, italics and hyperlinks is some of the basic experiences.
When to use
- To customize your tasks
- To help visualize your tasks in a smarter fashion
Instructions
- Open Todoist
- Create or edit a task
- Use one of the text-formatting tools to edit text
- To bold, select a piece of text and use ** or __ (double underscore)
- This will add bold formatting to the text
- Highlight a piece of text in bold
- Press save
- You can also add italics with just one * or _ surrounding a piece of text
- Or even use a hyperlink inside of your text
Hints & tips
- Use the Todoist guide to text-formatting to go a step further
- Use the activity/exercise to practice on demo tasks
- 00:04 Hello everyone, and welcome back to this GoSkills course all about Todoist.
- 00:09 Now in the previous session we discussed subtasks and
- 00:11 how you can get started with creating your first checklist, that was exciting.
- 00:16 And in this feature we're going to dive into text formatting, demonstrating some
- 00:20 of the most popular text formatting abilities inside of Todoist.
- 00:25 Now we're also going to include a link to the full version,
- 00:28 as sadly we won't be able to show you all.
- 00:30 However, we'll show you the most useful ones that you can use to help to
- 00:35 specifically bring out and draw out attention inside of your Todoist task
- 00:39 list, and we're going to demonstrate how you can do that.
- 00:42 Now Todoist uses something called CommonMark,
- 00:45 which is a compatible markdown editor allowing you to use a host of different
- 00:50 marketing abilities including a lot more in the comments function.
- 00:54 Now we'll be talking more about the comments function in the projects
- 00:58 area that we'll be diving into in this Todoist course.
- 01:01 Here I've got a few items on my list and what I'm going to first off
- 01:05 doing is make it a bit clearer that I want to cook salmon tonight.
- 01:10 So let's demonstrate how you can use the bold text formatting.
- 01:13 You can either use two asterisks around the piece of
- 01:17 text you wish to bold out, as you can see it goes bolder.
- 01:23 Or you can underscore,
- 01:24 two underscores will make it bold as well, so let me do this.
- 01:29 Both have gone bold and
- 01:31 allow you to see that salmon is clearly the most important thing to cook tonight.
- 01:36 You can if you wanted to, remove one of the underscores and have it as an italics.
- 01:43 So for example, if you wanted to italicize anything you can do so there.
- 01:47 Now this is really easy to do and something that you can do to any piece of
- 01:51 text in your piece of work in front of you, and
- 01:54 it will help you to define exactly what you are doing in terms of activities.
- 01:59 So for example you can also do something like this,
- 02:01 if you wanted to be a bit more definitive on what you'll be cooking tonight and
- 02:05 you wanted to make it a bit more of an item statement inside of your task list
- 02:09 you can do this, !!COOK!!: Salmon.
- 02:12 Now all I've done here is I put exclamation marks next to COOK, and
- 02:16 had a colon there, and salmon, and
- 02:19 that essentially makes the text bold and also you can uppercase that too.
- 02:24 Now of course if I wanted to add a hyperlink in this I could do so,
- 02:27 now let's add a work item.
- 02:29 I'm going to create a task inside of here and
- 02:31 I'm going to add a hyperlink that will be relevant.
- 02:34 Here I've created a item inside of the work project,
- 02:38 I've added the brackets around YouTube, which is the text that
- 02:42 I would like to be hyperlinked, and then I've added the hyperlink after it.
- 02:46 Now I've also added text around this, so hopefully what you should see
- 02:50 is Create YouTube video for new staff without this long hyperlink in the middle.
- 02:56 It seems to have worked properly, and
- 02:57 what I can do is I can immediately go to that hyperlink just by clicking into it.
- 03:02 Now this is a great way to help define specific items and activities, so
- 03:06 let's add this to the main today section.
- 03:09 Using what we learned about due dates, let's add this one today at 3 PM.
- 03:15 It's past 3 PM so the item will flag up in red,
- 03:19 however it does appear in the main inbox and you can also see the hyperlink there.
- 03:24 We demonstrate here how to use bold, italic, and also hyperlink.
- 03:28 But there are a few more that you can get started with and
- 03:31 they're easily accessible through the text formatting page inside of Todoist.
- 03:37 So hopefully that gave you a nice introduction to text formatting,
- 03:39 as you can imagine this is more an advanced function.
- 03:42 In the next feature we'll be discussing priorities,
- 03:44 which is one of the favorite functions for many professionals inside of Todoist.
- 03:49 I'll see you in the next feature, cheers.
