Turn Something You Love Into a Memorable Experience
Passion for the Subject:
- Great trainers must not only be knowledgeable but also genuinely passionate about their subject matter.
- Finding and emphasizing aspects of the subject that are personally interesting can enhance the training experience for both the trainer and the trainees.
Engagement and Enthusiasm:
- A trainer's enthusiasm for the subject is crucial for engaging trainees.
- Trainees are more likely to be engaged and learn effectively when they sense the trainer's genuine interest and excitement.
Creating Memorable Learning Experiences:
- Effective training goes beyond conveying information; it involves creating memorable and meaningful experiences.
- Techniques like using multimedia tools, role-playing exercises, and interactive activities can make learning more dynamic and memorable.
Utilizing Practical Tools:
- Incorporating various tools such as videos, audiobooks, and team-building exercises can enhance the learning experience and ensure the material is not only heard but remembered.
- These tools help transform abstract concepts into tangible skills and knowledge that trainees can see, hear, and practice.
Impact and Retention:
- The ultimate goal of training is to leave a lasting impact on trainees, making the content memorable enough to be retained long term.
- Considering how trainees will remember and apply the skills learned is crucial in designing effective training sessions.
- 00:00 If you want to be a great trainer, you've got to love what you do. You've got to love your subject matter,
- 00:06 and you've got to love helping other people understand and build new skills. I love what
- 00:12 I do. I train people on how to train, I specifically train people on how to give speeches, presentations,
- 00:19 more effectively. I find it fascinating and a lot of fun. Now, if you don't completely
- 00:25 love the subject matter you're teaching you've got to somehow figure out some aspect of it that is interesting
- 00:32 to you and that will be interesting to the people you're training.
- 00:38 There's nothing worse than listening to someone train, you can tell they're just going through the motions.
- 00:44 I'm sure you've had some bad training like that in your life. If nothing else, there was a time back in high
- 00:50 school or grade school, where there was a teacher. You could tell was just counting down the days to full
- 00:56 retirement. Until that pension kicks in and they could quit, they're just droning on and
- 01:02 on. That's not what an effective trainer does. So you've got to figure
- 01:09 out. I believe this is a little more esoteric. I understand that. This isn't quite as practical as the rest
- 01:15 of the course is going to be. But at some point, you've got to figure out what's motivating you
- 01:21 to find this particular subject matter and what it is you're teaching and training
- 01:27 to be exciting. You've got to be excited about it. I don't mean jumping up, rah, rah, rah,
- 01:34 you don't have to be a cheerleader. You're not to be Anthony Robbins, but there's got to be something when people are
- 01:41 watching you. When people in your classroom are really looking at you. They get a sense that
- 01:47 you really care about this subject. Without that, it's going to be very hard to engage your
- 01:54 trainees in anything else you say or do.
- 01:57 Competent trainers convey information, good trainers allow a trainee to
- 02:03 really understand something, have a new skill, but great trainers create interesting,
- 02:09 useful, memorable experiences for their trainees. I need you to think about this.
- 02:16 Now some subjects are easier than other subjects. My core subject of training is public speaking
- 02:22 and speaking to the media. So that lends itself to people standing up, speaking being
- 02:28 recorded, playing it back, and it becomes an extraordinarily meaningful, memorable experience.
- 02:35 But you can make any subject boring or interesting. There are plenty of people
- 02:41 who come to me who've been to other public speaking training workshops and they've only been on camera once or twice
- 02:47 when they come to me for a full day, even if it's a large group, they're going to get on camera
- 02:54 and speak at least a dozen times. That becomes a truly memorable experience.
- 03:00 The most memorable part of it isn't anything I said. It's when they see themselves
- 03:07 on video and they really like what they see. They see that they've mastered all the fundamentals
- 03:14 and are now coming across their very best. You've got to think about what is it
- 03:20 that someone could do in a training with you to give them this sense of mastery and
- 03:27 give that real thought. How can you use videos, audios, books, texts,
- 03:34 role-playing exercises, team building, doing things on video. You've got to think
- 03:41 of every possible tool to create an actual experience for the
- 03:47 people you're training if you want to have the biggest impact on them. If you want them
- 03:53 to remember it, but if they don't remember it, how have we really helped them?
- 03:59 So think about not just the actual intellectual content you have to convey, but how
- 04:06 can you package all this in an experience that people will remember?
- 04:12 I hope at the end of the day, but ideally for a lifetime.
