Searching for Cards
Learn how to use the search bar so you can find the card you're looking for.
When to use
To learn how to efficiently find information within any board. To understand the difference between searching a single board and all boards.
Instructions
Searching the Active Board
To search the contents of the board that is currently open, select Show Menu > Filter Cards.
At the top of the Filter menu you can search this board by keyword(s).
Searching All Boards
To search the contents of all boards that you have access to, select the search bar at the very top of the screen.
Search Operators
Below is a list of search operators you can use to help you refine your search:
@name
Returns cards assigned to a member. If you start typing @, Trello will suggest members for you. Typing "member:" also works. @me will include only your cards.
#label
Returns labeled cards. "label:" also works.
board:id
Returns cards within a specific board. If you start typing "board:", Trello will suggest boards for you. You can search by board name, too, such as "board:Trello" to search only cards on boards with Trello in the board name.
list:name
Returns cards within the list named “name”. Or whatever you type besides “name”.
has:attachments
Returns cards with attachments. "has:description", "has:cover", "has:members", and "has:stickers" also work as you would expect.
due:day
Returns cards due within 24 hours. "due:week", "due:month", and "due:overdue" also work as expected. You can search for a specific day range. For example, adding "due:14" to search will include cards due in the next 14 days.
created:day
Returns cards created in the last 24 hours. "created:week" and "created:month" also work as expected. You can search for a specific day range. For example, adding "created:14" to the search will include cards created in the last 14 days.
edited:day
Returns cards edited in the last 24 hours. "edited:week" and "edited:month" also work as expected. You can search for a specific day range. For example, adding "edited:21" to the search will include cards edited in the last 21 days.
description:, checklist:, comment:, and name:
Returns cards matching the text of card descriptions, checklists, comments, or names. For example, comment:"FIX IT" will return cards with “FIX IT” in a comment.
is:open and is:archived
Returns cards that are either open or archived. Trello returns both types by default if neither type is specified in the search.
is:starred
Only includes cards on starred boards.
Login to download- 00:05 Filtering can be an excellent way to quickly
- 00:07 find cards that have similar attributes.
- 00:11 Whether they have the same label, or a similar due date.
- 00:15 Or perhaps the same person is assigned to those cards.
- 00:18 But what if you'd like to be a little more granular?
- 00:22 What if you'd like to be a little more specific with your search?
- 00:25 Well, under the Filter Cards menu, you will see at the top there is a search bar.
- 00:31 Here you can enter in text and look for cards that match.
- 00:36 And have that text within a specific card.
- 00:39 However, anything that you select here in the Filter Cards menu
- 00:44 will only search cards on the existing board.
- 00:48 What if you like to search for
- 00:49 other cards, everything that's attached to your Trello account?
- 00:54 Well, at the top level menu you will see that there is an additional search bar,
- 00:59 and this will allow you to search any card, which is attached, or
- 01:04 you have access to through your Trello account.
- 01:08 Now, by default, they include one saved search.
- 01:12 So, if you would quickly like to see all of the cards that are assigned to you,
- 01:16 you can select this My Cards option.
- 01:20 And here you can see it's bringing back every card,
- 01:23 which is currently assigned to me.
- 01:25 The first two are a part of the board we're currently looking at, but
- 01:29 you will notice that the third card is in a different board.
- 01:34 I can access any of these cards directly either by selecting the image on the left,
- 01:39 or by selecting the clickable link on the right.
- 01:43 But let's go back and search for something a little more simple.
- 01:47 Perhaps, I want to see every card that has the word phone in it.
- 01:51 Here, quickly, it's showing me the two cards
- 01:54 which have phone as a part of either the title, or the description.
- 01:59 Now, if you find this view a little cramped,
- 02:03 especially if the results bring back a large number of cards.
- 02:07 You may select this pop out option.
- 02:11 And, now, you will see your search results on an entire screen.
- 02:16 Again, this might be very helpful if your results bring back a long listing.
- 02:23 Lastly, it's important to note that you can make even more complicated, or
- 02:27 more specific search by using a list of text operators.
- 02:32 And a few examples are given here.
- 02:35 So, if you are searching for a card assigned to a particular member,
- 02:40 you can use the @ symbol in front of their username. If you're looking for
- 02:45 a card with a particular label, you can use a hashtag in front of that label name.
- 02:50 And if you'd like to learn a full listing of these text operators, you can select
- 02:55 the learn more link, and see all of the operators which are available.
- 03:01 So, it really can allow you to be very granular,
- 03:04 very specific as to what you are searching for.
- 03:08 So, remember, if you would like to search for
- 03:11 something on the active, or existing board that you’re looking for
- 03:16 or that you're looking at, take a look at the filtered cards option.
- 03:20 But if you would like to broad in your search and be a little more specific,
- 03:24 you can use the search bar at the top level menu.
