Adding Custom Fields
Understand the benefits of adding custom fields to your card.
When to use
To learn how to add custom fields to a Trello board. To understand the different types of custom fields that can be added.
Instructions
Power-ups give your boards additional features and integrations with other applications. Boards belonging to free users can turn on one Power-up at a time while boards belonging to business class users can have unlimited power-ups.
Enabling Power-Ups
Enable power-ups by selecting Power-Ups from the board menu. Then select Enable or Disable to activate or deactivate the power-ups you would like to use. NOTE: You have to be a member of that board's team to enable power-ups.
Creating a Custom Field
Select the gear icon next to the power-up or the button Custom Fields inside a card to add a new field.
Name is the name of the custom field. A field name can be up to 25 characters in length.
Type will specify the type of input that can be entered for the custom field. This can be set to Text, Number, Checkbox, Date, or Dropdown List. If you select Dropdown List, you will have the option to enter the choices for that dropdown.
Using a Custom Field
Once you have set up one or more custom fields, you can enter values for those fields by selecting the Custom Fields button inside the card.
Login to download- 00:05 Trello gives us so many different ways in which we can add information to a card.
- 00:10 Whether it's colored labels, or text based labels.
- 00:13 Whether we want to add check lists and due dates, attachments, add members and
- 00:18 comments.
- 00:19 There's a variety of things in which we can add to each Trello card.
- 00:23 But what if you'd like to add something very specific?
- 00:26 What if you would like to add a custom field?
- 00:30 Well, there's a power-up for that.
- 00:33 By enabling the custom fields power-up,
- 00:36 you can add a variety of custom options to each of your Trello cards.
- 00:42 Let's select this gear icon, so we can edit our power-up settings.
- 00:48 So, when you first enable the custom field settings,
- 00:51 you will have no custom fields at all.
- 00:54 So, let's start by adding a custom field.
- 00:58 We can first start by naming the field, and
- 01:01 in this case I want to add an approved check box.
- 01:05 Let's say, I am working with a process, and
- 01:08 I want a check box that will show if that card has been approved, or not.
- 01:14 Now, below we have a few different ways that we can add a custom field.
- 01:18 It can be a text field, it can be a number field.
- 01:22 It can be a check box, that's what we're gonna use in my example.
- 01:25 But you can also add a date field, or even a drop down list with multiple options.
- 01:32 So, in this case I'm gonna select the check box field.
- 01:36 Now, the last choice that we're given here as if we want to show
- 01:41 this custom field on the front of the card.
- 01:44 Now, by default this will be unchecked.
- 01:47 And that means, that we won't see an icon,
- 01:50 we won't see any additional information on the front of the card.
- 01:54 But, because I find it quite useful,
- 01:57 I'm going to select this check box and select Save.
- 02:02 Now, this brings us back to the Custom Fields Settings area.
- 02:06 And here you can see the custom field in which I've added.
- 02:10 Now, I can either continue to add additional custom fields, or
- 02:14 I can always come back and edit this field, as well.
- 02:18 The last choice that we have on this menu is the actual button name.
- 02:23 By default this button will be labeled, Custom Fields.
- 02:27 But I can always change this in the future if I wish.
- 02:30 In this example, I'm going to leave it as custom fields.
- 02:34 So, let's close up this menu and let's open up a card.
- 02:39 Here, under the Power-Ups section, you can see our Custom Fields button.
- 02:45 And, remember, you can always change this label if you wish.
- 02:48 And by selecting this button we will get a list of all of our custom fields.
- 02:54 In my example, I've only added one.
- 02:57 So, I'm going to select approved.
- 02:59 I'm going to say, that I have approved this card and hit Save.
- 03:03 And you will also notice that this custom field appears near the top of the card.
- 03:08 In fact, it makes it very easy for me to toggle this check box on and off.
- 03:13 By just selecting the link I can toggle it from yes to no.
- 03:19 And when I close the card and when it has been approved,
- 03:22 you can see that I even see that text on the front of the card.
- 03:26 That can be very helpful.
- 03:27 Very useful to me, if I want to take a glance and
- 03:30 see which of my cards have been approved.
- 03:34 So, within your Power-Up menu, you can experiment with different custom fields.
- 03:40 You can add as many different custom fields as you like, and
- 03:44 remember the variety of types that you can use.
- 03:46 Text, number, check box, date, or even a drop down list.
