Navigating the Page
Learn how to control where you type and how to navigate within the page.
When to use
This is useful every time you are in MS Word. Knowing where your insertion point is and where it should be is vital to getting a document finished in a timely manner.
Instructions
- Double click anywhere on the page and observe the insertion point placement.
- Use the Enter key to move the insertion point down.
- Use the Tab key to move the insertion point to the right.
- Use the Backspace key to move the insertion point to the left or up a line.
- Observe the alignment buttons in the Paragraph group to keep track of how your typing is aligned on the page.
- 00:04 Hello.
- 00:05 In this lesson, I want to show you how to control where you type on the screen.
- 00:08 The first thing you need to be aware of is your flashing insertion point.
- 00:13 So I have one word on the screen, and
- 00:14 right beside it my flashing insertion point just kind of hanging out there.
- 00:18 That is your lifeline.
- 00:20 Wherever that insertion point is where you're going to start typing.
- 00:23 So I've just typed a couple words, and
- 00:25 now I wanna move my insertion point down a couple lines.
- 00:28 Well, there's two ways to do this.
- 00:30 You could hit Enter on your keyboard a couple times, and
- 00:33 that forces your insertion point down, and
- 00:35 then you could type a sentence right there, and it throws in the sentence.
- 00:39 But there's another way to do it as well.
- 00:41 If you don't wanna hit Enter to move down, you could actually just move your I beam,
- 00:44 so you notice my arrow is in the left margin, but
- 00:48 when I come to a typing area my, my arrow turns into what's called an I beam,
- 00:52 because it looks like a capital letter I in the English language.
- 00:55 That's why they call it an I beam.
- 00:57 So I could actually just double click, click, click, and force my insertion point
- 01:01 to land right at that spot, and I could type a sentence there.
- 01:05 Now if I wanna type in the middle of the page,
- 01:07 I simply move my I beam over to the middle, and I double click, click click.
- 01:11 There it is in the center, and now I can type a sentence there.
- 01:15 Maybe I want to type on the right hand side, click click, and
- 01:19 go ahead and type the sentence there.
- 01:21 And so it's very easy, wherever you want to type, just double click and
- 01:26 type a sentence.
- 01:27 Now there is another way to do this as well, let me scroll down,
- 01:30 I'm gonna double click right here to place my insertion point.
- 01:33 I can hit my Tab key, and that will move my insertion point over by
- 01:37 a half inch spot, and then I can just enter a sentence anywhere I want.
- 01:41 When I hit my Enter key, it moves my insertion point down.
- 01:44 Now if I've tabbed over a few spaces and I decide no, no, no,
- 01:48 I wanna come back about half an inch, I hit my Backspace key and
- 01:52 that will move me back a half inch at a spot, at a time, or
- 01:55 I could just double click, wherever I want it to land, and type another sentence.
- 02:01 So that's how easy it is just to begin typing.
- 02:04 You can use your keyboard to move your insertion point around, or
- 02:07 you can use your mouse to move your insertion point around.
- 02:09 Now another thing that's happening is I want to draw your attention
- 02:12 up to the ribbon.
- 02:13 On the paragraph group where I've clicked right now,
- 02:16 you can see my insertion point below.
- 02:18 It's telling me that I am left aligned, cuz the left align button is lit up.
- 02:24 When I click on the one I dropped into the center of the page, look at that.
- 02:27 The paragraph is lit up on the center, it's center alignment.
- 02:32 And what do you think's gonna happen to this button right here
- 02:35 when I click on the one on the right?
- 02:37 Sure enough, it moved over cuz it's right alignment.
- 02:39 Now I didn't tell it to do that.
- 02:41 The program is programmed to do that.
- 02:43 So it's pretty interesting.
- 02:44 So I can actually click on this sentence now, and
- 02:47 I can force it to go to the center, or I can force it to go to the left,
- 02:51 simply by adjusting these three buttons on a paragraph format.
- 02:56 I can double click, I can Tab, I can Enter.
- 02:59 There's many ways to move around.
- 03:00 What will happen is you'll figure out the best way that works for you, and
- 03:04 the better you get at Microsoft Word, the faster you become
- 03:07 at entering your text because you won't be intimidated on how to do it.
- 03:11 All right, thank you, and I'll see you in the next video.
