Instructions
- First Line Indent: Press TAB on the keyboard
- Left indent: Click the “increase indent” button
- Hanging Indent: Generally used for numbers and bullets. To apply manually, click insert indent, but use the indent marker on the ruler and pull the top arrow to the left.
- Double Indent: used when formally quoting a person or text. To apply, click the “insert indent” button to move the paragraph from the left by 1 inch, then use the right-indent marker on the ruler to move the paragraph from the right by 1 inch.
Tip:
A double indent is traditionally used as a quote, along with double spaced text. To double space the text in a paragraph, press Ctrl 2.
Login to download- 00:05 Hello in this lesson, you're going to learn about indents and
- 00:08 how to control the indents.
- 00:10 Let's make sure your ruler's on your screen.
- 00:12 Please click on.
- 00:13 On the View ribbon, confirm there is a check mark on Ruler.
- 00:16 And you can visibly see the ruler at the top and the left side of your document.
- 00:20 All right, let's go ahead and point out the Indent buttons.
- 00:24 Let's go back to the Home ribbon there's two buttons right here.
- 00:28 One says decrease, one say increase.
- 00:30 If you can't remember which one just pause and
- 00:33 let the mouse tell you which one you're on.
- 00:34 All right, we're gonna start with the first line indent.
- 00:36 A couple of things are gonna happen.
- 00:38 When we insert and hit the Tab on our keyboard, you're actually going
- 00:43 to see this item right here on your ruler adjust itself, okay?
- 00:47 So I'm gonna press Tab in front of this paragraph and
- 00:50 this is called the first line indent.
- 00:52 As you can see what look like an hourglass is now split apart.
- 00:55 When I float my mouse into this Tab arrow, it actually shows me First Line Indent,
- 01:00 that's what it says it is.
- 01:01 Now the bottom one says left indent and even though it looks like there's two
- 01:06 little pieces there, just one little piece.
- 01:08 And it says left indent when I put the point of my mouse there.
- 01:11 All right, so that basically is first line indent.
- 01:13 Now, let's go ahead and use the left indent.
- 01:16 By the way, that first line indent went by default, just half an inch.
- 01:20 It's just how it's programmed to do that.
- 01:22 All right now, left indent technically means the entire paragraph
- 01:26 is going to move from the left margin, it's going to move in by half an inch.
- 01:31 So in this case, I am going to go ahead and hit my increase indent button.
- 01:35 I'll just click it once.
- 01:37 And you can visibly see that the entire paragraph moved, but
- 01:41 take a look at the roller, that moved as well.
- 01:44 I could have myself, floated my mouse right here, on the bottom arrow and
- 01:49 clicked and dragged the whole thing myself and placed it wherever I wanted to.
- 01:54 You have the control to do that.
- 01:55 That is why I'm making a big deal of the ruler and
- 01:59 these little items on the ruler here.
- 02:00 Okay, now these buttons up here to increase indent
- 02:04 will move you exactly a half an inch forward or backwards.
- 02:07 But, you can control it by clicking.
- 02:10 Those tools on the ruler itself, all right?
- 02:13 So that's your Left Indent.
- 02:15 Now a Hanging Indent, let's go ahead and select item one, two and three, and
- 02:19 we're gonna apply numbering to this.
- 02:21 Now watch the ruler, when I click, my ruler just split apart, okay?
- 02:27 When I float my mouse up here on the top it says First Line Indent, when I click in
- 02:30 hold you see the guideline on my screen go right beside the one, two, three.
- 02:35 And right over here, this is the left indent portion of the contents and
- 02:40 you can see the guideline on the screen now.
- 02:42 I can adjust this one and move it wherever I want, but when I adjust the top one,
- 02:46 that simply spreads the numbers of part and away from the list.
- 02:49 Okay?
- 02:50 So again you have full control If only
- 02:53 someone would have told you long ago that they'll just hit the numbers button.
- 02:58 Oops when I turned it off that whole thing turned off.
- 03:00 I have to highlight it all.
- 03:01 Hit the numbers button brings it all back together.
- 03:03 So that's the easy way to do numbers.
- 03:05 Turn them on, turn them off but
- 03:07 you can control the way of their placement by using These tools on the ruler.
- 03:12 All right, a hanging indent in a paragraph.
- 03:16 In this case, I'm going to go ahead and hit the increase indent by 1/2",
- 03:21 but now I'm going to click this top arrow first line indent.
- 03:24 And pull it back and that is technically a hanging indent,
- 03:27 which actually looks really cool on formal reports.
- 03:30 All right, the double indent.
- 03:31 Double indent simply means, it's going to be one full inch from the left edge,
- 03:36 one full inch from the right edge.
- 03:37 So that's easy to do with the left edge, two ways I can click and
- 03:41 drag it, one full inch, or I can hit my increase indent twice.
- 03:46 Now on the right edge, though, I want this to be on the 5 inch mark.
- 03:52 This little, this is your right indent button right over here.
- 03:56 So when I click and drag that,
- 03:57 I just pull that to the, I guess it technically would be the 5.25 inch mark.
- 04:02 Okay, and of course, if you're going to formally quote someone,
- 04:07 you're gonna double-space that paragraph and put quotation marks around it, right?
- 04:11 So Ctrl + 2 is the quick way going to double-space paragraph.
- 04:14 Okay, so there you go.
- 04:16 That's how you control and then apply indent, move them around, all right.
- 04:20 Thank you.
